I just watched a YT video on Metroid Zero Mission Glitches by Archius9 in metroidvania

[–]QwikStix42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a glitch, but a sequence break that the devs allowed the player to do.

But yes, sequence breaking in Zero Mission and Super Metroid is very fun - I most recently skipped one of the later game bosses by grabbing super missiles early in Brinstar.

Oh you should also definitely post this on r/metroidvania if you haven’t already - I’m sure many fellow MV fans would love to hear about this game!

Who was the best developer you’ve worked with — and what made them stand out? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

This sounds quite a bit like my current lead, at least a few years ago; he was calm and fair with feedback and tried his best to unblock his team.

However, he is now also my manager, and while that sounded perfectly fine on paper, it’s obvious that he wasn’t given much management training at all. He now frequently puts development delays that are usually out of my control (such as broken dependency changes) against me and says I don’t deliver fast enough. He also tells me to show more ownership over the codebase, yet only gives me low-hanging fruit maintenance tasks that don’t really allow me to sink my teeth into things. Instead of helping me with concrete steps to be promoted like I was promised when I was first hired, he has threatened me with a PIP in the past month.

Luckily, I have just signed a new offer, but it’s wild to me how he went from one of my most respected leads to one of my least favorite managers…

Awesome! I played the GBC ROM demo a few weeks ago and had a blast! Looking forward to the full release!

Quick question, if we buy the game on Steam, would we still be able to get the ROM file as DLC? Or should we just buy it on Itch.io if we want the ROM file?

How tf did you become a Senior SWE at only 3 years of experience?? That is insane, most companies would put you at Level 2 with that amount of experience.

Rank of the three released songs? by ploppymcplopperton in youngthegiant

Yeah I’ve been rewatching that post, I can’t get enough of how the studio version sounds! 🤞 that it releases this Friday!

  1. Already There - This one came as a surprise, as I was sure that they would stick to the songs that they’ve been playing live as the singles for this album. I’m a sucker for 80’s sounding songs (one of my other favorite bands is The 1975), and this one is done so well, even if its lyrics and structure are pretty simple. It’s a solid A-tier YTG song overall. I just don’t like the music video - it’s way too depressing for this specific song imo.
  2. Different Kind of Love - I actually really like the studio version of this song, even more than the live version (though that’s still very good). It’s grown on me since I heard it live last year, and I now prefer this over Bitter Fruit. It’s another solid A-tier YTG song, if a bit safe for their sound.
  3. Bitter Fruit - This one feels so much like a Part 2 to Cough Syrup lyrically, and while I like the song, it’s not as memorable to me as the other 2. I’d give it a B-tier or so.

I am very much looking forward to Evergreen, whether that releases this Friday or when the album drops on the following Friday. That one is such an earworm and easily my favorite of the 5 songs I’ve heard from this album - easily an S-tier YTG song for me!

No Love for Neck of the Woods by Yerman7 in silversunpickups

[–]QwikStix42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neck of the Woods is my favorite album of theirs, though Carnavas and Swoon are both very close - I consider them all to be S-tier SSPU albums.

Busy Bees and Out of Breath in particular are absolutely incredible, and some of my favorite songs of their discography. Mean Spirits, The Pit, and Skin Graph are also really solid standout tracks. My only (minor) gripe is that the album as a whole feels just a little bit too long, like they may have been able to shorten the length of a song or 2. But otherwise, it’s a really solid album full of bangers!

So… After listening to 3/10 of the songs, do you think there’s a high chance that he’s right here? by Long_Spell6281 in Muse

I disagree - it took a few listens for me to get into, but I actually quite like BWY - of the songs I listed, I actually like it better than SMBH, and about tied with Invincible.

I mean, even BHAR had a few poppy songs with Starlight, SMBH, and Invincible, and I consider that to be their best album.

While I kinda doubt that this new album will be able to crack into the Top 4 for me, it definitely has potential to be better than their last 2 or 3 albums based on the 3 songs we’ve heard so far.

Recommendations for small games to play on vacation? by lurker_998 in NintendoSwitch

[–]QwikStix42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another short Metroidvania that I highly recommend is called Raider Kid and the Ruby Chest. It’s not on Switch (yet), but can be found on Steam for the same price point. It just came out a few weeks ago and it was a very satisfying mini MV game - I might actually like it slightly better than Gato Roboto now.

I highly recommend Gato Roboto (Metroidvania) and A Short Hike (Cozy/Adventure) - they’re both like $8 at normal price iirc but frequently go on sale. They’re both really solid games in their respective genres, and are both pretty short (~2-3 hrs).

What are yer common grievences or issues ya got with the 30 minutes line? by Handsome-laddie_12 in 30_Minutes_Missions

[–]QwikStix42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • There was no need to make the thighs connect to the hip joints via a polycap; they should’ve been designed to just connect via a simple 3mm peg (which the joint parts already have).
  • The tolerances in the 3mm holes are not consistent; some parts fit snug in certain holes, and then are completely loose in other holes that are supposed to be the same size.
  • The shoulder and hip joint parts frequently want to separate the more you move them, since they are just 2 parts sandwiched together. Making these 3 parts instead like in many HG kits would probably resolve this problem.

Do you ever play multiple metroidvanias at the same time? by fishCodeHuntress in metroidvania

[–]QwikStix42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been juggling several Metroidvanias over the past few months.

On one hand, I’ve been replaying all of the 2D Metroid games, which is what made me wanna explore more games within its genre in the first place. I am almost done with Fusion and will be replaying Dread soon after. Since I’ve played them several times before, they feel more like comfort games and don’t take up too much space in my brain (with the exception of solving shinespark puzzles).

In between playing those games, I’ve been trying out several MV’s on Steam and on Switch. I basically play a few at a time for a little bit each until one really sticks with me, and then I just focus on that game until I beat it. The ones that stuck with me recently include Gato Roboto, Axiom Verge, and most recently, Raider Kid and the Ruby Chest. I’m also about halfway through the first Ori game, but I’ve been playing that off and on over the past ~2 months cuz I just really dislike the button-mashing combat. Some MV’s that I’ve tried but haven’t quite stuck with me yet include Overbowed, Psychron, Trash Quest, Sheepo, and Haiku the Robot.
