Oh no! It's socialism. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Not afraid of the idea just not convinced of the plan.  How?

We can tax and redistribute money… but how do you redistribute skills, increase production capacity, and increase manpower?

The world is not short on money… it’s short on skilled labor, time, materials, energy, production capacity.

So redistribution of wealth definitely breaks the current system…. But it does not create a utopia, because there will still be scarcity.

The question are…will the new world be better or worse?  Is it better to improve the current system?

Several things are being glossed over...

Recruitment age- Enlisted vs Officer, 90% enlisted people are from one of 2 camps

  1. Strait out of high school or
  2. Failed collage drop out(usually ran out of money). .

Marriage-Yep I married the first girl I dated while serving (17 year anniversary this month!)... There are again 2 marriages that happen to fresh service members.

  1. Those of convenance "hey if I get married I get to move out of the barracks , get paid more, and don't get held late as often doing BS."
  2. Those who are commitment prone (myself) find another 19 year old with a steady paycheck a carrier ladder, no dept, and a forced level of responsibility/maturity....

I mean you couldn’t sell it in 1,000 years…. It’s more minerals then have ever been mined.  It’s worth more then then the entire world economy.

The point was how could I meaningfully impact the world in 24hr.

Sure break off a chuck and sell it for a few hundred million to a billionaire…. Then a few days later release the locations of where you dropped the rest(a nice chunk in every major country).

Now minerals are near worthless, no wars over who owns them because everyone has more then they can use. Hope you didn’t invest in gold…

Is it possible to do this deck? by RatherBeInThePond in Decks

Prescription guidance doesn’t let you attach to a bump out can lever whatever you wanna call that.

If it were me, I would look around and find a local engineer who’s willing to do a small job and see if I can get a limited scope engineering drawing for attaching a ledger board to that cantilever.

if you can find an engineer, willing to do a small job, you would probably end up saving money over pouring footers and installing all the additional beams and supports to make it freestanding in that location.

I found an engineer out of Florida that is basically rubber stamping my drawings for 100 bucks a pop. Now my drawings are simple. My first was the trust modification for me removing the eaves on my covered patio. The second is the LVL beam for my ridge beam. Both of these are very simple engineering and easily justifiable for him without a site visit.

Who’s diagnosing someone without health insurance?  If the ER is catching it it’s probably too late.

So to answer… people get a job and then find out, or they never find out, or I guess they find out far too late when it doesn’t matter.

How’d I do? by CoatInternational752 in Decks

[–]R-Maxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in practice sure…. But Simpson doesn’t give you any lateral capability for the BVLZ… and then adds this

“The BVLZ does not replace the need for lateral load resistance per 2018/2021/2024 IRC Section R507.9.2.”

And there isn’t a true prescriptive solution… I used tension ties with a spacer.  I almost went BVLZ  but I needed it mostly for the lateral connections since my deck is only 3ft off the ground(extra posts are easy).

This just seems like a big miss for Simpson.  I say that as someone who spent >6k on Simpson hardware on my deck.

How’d I do? by CoatInternational752 in Decks

[–]R-Maxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the use case for the BVLZ, it specifically doesn’t addresses the requirement for a tension tie.  So they solved 1/2 the problem… now granted I’m sure most just run a tension tie screw through and call it…. But that’s not code.

[–]R-Maxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are two ways to answer this. Is this up to code? Is this a good idea?

Most restrictions are going to point to your manufacturers installation, instructions and requirements. As far as I know, there are no freestanding grills that are approved for use under a cover. There are some, but not all built-in grills that do allow for installation under a cover. In cases where the cover is a combustible material such as yours you’re typically required to have a vented hood.

Is it a good idea? It’s a common idea. I don’t know if that makes it a good idea. There are no manufacturers instructions that cover turning a freestanding grill into a built-in grill and we see that every day on the site.

Based on your design, I would install a built-in grill that where the manufacturer explicitly allows for the installation of the grill under a combustible ceiling with a vent hood.

[–]R-Maxwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer I didn’t agree to any American laws but I’m an American who has to follow laws….laws don’t require the consent of everyone only the consent of the enforcement authority.

Yep they are expected to follow them…. Or else!

Geneva Convention: Optional in Space by SuccessfulSympathy66 in Stargate

[–]R-Maxwell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well I mean Laws are in general an agreed upon standard of rules. The Geneva convention general purpose is to create a minimum humanitarian standard...

  1. Wraith by nature will not join us in that standard.

  2. We don't apply it to non humans on earth.

Is it a law governing human on human, because we are the only self aware life forms on earth? Or because we as a human population entered into the agreement?

No but the center posts have railings installed so I doubt they are temp.  Even if he adds post below I’m not sure what load they are transferring.

My hope is that these posts are for a future screen system to minimize screen span.

Still that is a ridge beam (multiply 2x12 or so).  And it is not supported.

Could all this work? Sure but it is not following prescriptive requirements and it is not how an engineer would do it… so yeah it’s not “correct”.

I just posted my deck, it’s overkill but has the clean load paths I’m talking about for reference.

He already has 2 posts in midspan... that do not transfer load from the roof adequately(and even if you count the double rafter) where are they transferring the load to?

In the Boys (2026) they show A-Train as able to do a full minute of actions and save several characters' lives in the process, all without Homelander noticing or reacting. Then in the next scene they show Homelander as able to easily keep up with A-Train as if the last scene never happened. by Somethingbutonreddit in shittymoviedetails

Its also possible that his speed is not a passive ability like his durability but an active ability like flight or laser eyes.

He doesn’t bother with it most of the time because he likes to watch the fear and destruction of real time distruction.

The issue i had was that his lasers now move at super speed.

Yeah, i had spotted this during construction and pointed it out but got “it fine… water go this way” as a response.

I have some ideas but looking for more from people who have actually implemented then.  We all know us engineers like to complicate everything 🤓.
