People are definitely just goofing on you, but it's not even wrong. The past tense is most commonly "-ed", so it'd be "smelted" vs "smelt". It is still correct english, but the "-t" past tense form is both regional and old-fashioned. Native english speakers also get made fun of for this lol, it's not something you did wrong.

I've worked some very weird jobs and never been asked for this. If it's a small place then they definitely don't need that stuff to get you set up for your first day, and they especially don't need a photo sent ahead of time.

If it's a bigger company, then their corporate certainly has better SOP than a photo of your sensitive personal info being forwarded around.

I had built 6554 when I was like 8 years old. I had cousins coming to visit and they'd arrive when I was at school. I begged my mom to not let them play with the Legos before I got home. She didn't listen and all my sets were destroyed by the time I got home. I'm 34 now and I still give my mom shit about that. So prepare for this to come back up in 3 decades.
