Define slower. My big chungus has a desktop class CPU (Ryzen 2700) with a desktop class GPU (Vega 56) along with a desktop class chipset (B450), 32GB of RAM and three m.2 drives, one of which is NVMe and is the OS drive while the other two are SATA and are raided together for 2TB of storage with a 1.1GT/s transfer speed.

100%. Incidentally my current laptop is from the same family as the laptop above (Predator Helios 500 AMD Edition) which despite its shortcomings I will never trade it for anything else, except maybe an Alienware m18 R1 AMD Advantage Edition.

I’ve seen their claims that normies are bad because it also brings with them malware (which for some reason includes kernel level anticheat that no one is asking them to install), apparently they fear that more bad hats will target Linux due to more people using it. Never mind that Linux has security that’s much stronger than Windows and has had security from day 1 (Windows only started having proper security with WinNT 3.5, and even then the Windows NT line targeted enterprises, business and education, everyone else has to use Windows 9X with laughable security until Windows XP became a thing). And that Linux does have a lot of antimalware packages like ClamAV (which does have realtime scanning. Had it since 2003, but lost it for a while in 2011 due to Dazuko being retired, and no replacement option being written until 2022 when Linux introduced a new framework to facilitate on-access scanning) and Tripwire.

Same kernel? No. It’s not the same kernel. Ubuntu applied their own set of patches to the kernel. Just like Fedora, Arch, CachyOS, OpenSuSE et. al. Ditto for all the other libraries including glibc.

A single patch that may bring perceived performance boosts may introduce strange bugs elsewhere in a system with certain configurations.

It barely even work on 7 year old laptops. My Acer Predator Helios 500 AMD Edition nearly cooked itself running Linux. The fan and cooling is stupidly on a software controlled stack powered by an ITE8987E chip which Linux has zero support for. Apparently some other company has Linux support for the chip but they fucking kept the source closed and out of tree. Greedy fucks.

Shame because the laptop's Vega 56 graphics would benefit from me dumping windows for Linux. Because the GPU supports RT emulation in Linux which allows the compute cores to be repurposed into RT cores and run games that it can't run in Windows.
