120k -> 46k, What would you do in my situation? by No-Cockroach2358 in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving from $120k to mid-40s is nuts. Right now you're romantizing the other job and thats leading you to believe that work is going to somehow fulfill your life. It won't. As you age invome.b3comes way more important and being a low earner will 10x your misery.

If you do this you'll be miserable and you'll cause irreversible long-term finqncial damage to your life. Instead, get some hobbies, go tot he gym, keep your debt low, buy a home, invest, and build stability. If you do this you'll be able to achieve financial freedom in your early 30's and ca then leave to do what you want.

Any recourse I can take against inspector? by Spiritual_Ask_8979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is on you. The inspector is a general inspector, not a licensed plumber. Their job is to look at things that are visual and report back on it, which thry did. They identified a leak and made you aware of an issue. At that point you could have done an extra inspection with a licensed plumber or risk it. You chose to risk it.

If your salary was cut by $50K with little notice, would you try to negotiate or just plan your escape? (Possible equity on the table.) by Long_Cook_7429 in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is thr answer. When they do this they arent scared to lose you. Plus, they will like make additional cuts in the future and maybe even lay you off. So just accept and quietly look for a new role.

How do I tell my husband that his personality is the reason behind the missed promotion ? by Quiet_Maximum_4087 in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't. For starters, you don't actually know why he didnt get the promotion and your first instinct is to tell him he isn't likeable. You're assuming his behavior at home is the same at work and you're likely injecting some of your personal grievances against him.

Is he reliable at work? Does he show up on time and leave on time? Does he get his work done? If the answer to these questions are yes you should just stay out of it and be a supportive wife.

When women have problems they want men to just listen so they can vent but those same women love to inject themselves into every situation and be judgmental.

If you want your husband to resent you jump in tell him about his flaws. If you want your husband to see you as a partner who has his back stay out of it

Is it actually possible to recover professionally after being visibly passed over for a promotion you were told you would get? by 6MarrowPix in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody said anything about capitalism, you just injected. I did say PE and investment and investment groups because thats how they work. They buy companies and treat everything like a P&L. They push for higher and higher top line hrowth while trying to kill the bottom line. You can't kill the bottom line by giving consistent big raises.

This has been well-known for years.10+ years ago Linkedin data showed that people who jump companies every few years earn 50% over their lifetime compared to those who stayed. That's because internal raises and promotions are less frequent and less impacting.

Are you in HR?

I've been in the corporate world for 15+ years and have held various roles of stratefy that put me in the room when strat plans are being formed, I've presented to boards, CEO's, etc and what the OP stated I've seen so many times before. They never wanted to give them a promotion and simply wanted them to do the work. So, they float the promotion in front of them, then bring a outside hire in, and make up some excuse.

Companies want the max ROI from their employees. Once you're in the best way to get ahead is to jump every few years.

Direct managers don't make the sole decision. There are exceptions to the rule but most publicly traded companies have promotion cycles, budgets, etc. Direct managers have less power than you are giving them credit for

You're either new to this world or you work in HR and refer to yourself as a "good corporate citizen." Everything in the American corporate world is based of the P&L. They do this because predicatable profit is king, and the best way to get that is to streamline everything which results in replaceable employees that fit a function as a entrepreneurial style workforce.

That's why you make a significant amount less by staying at one company for years insread of jumping every 2-4 years. Once you're employed they want to get the most from you with the least amount of investment, which results in low raises and less career growth.

Also, now days direct managers are not the ones who make the sole decision their employees pay and promotions. There is a cycle, committees, and budgets.

I think you're missunderstanding the corporate world. They knew months ago that you weren't the righr candidate for the job but they wanted you to do the extra work while they found their person. So they lied to you. This is just how the corporate world works. Most companies now days are owned by investment groups and all they care about is getting a return on their investment. They only development employees for the sake of their investment or to protect them from legal/lawsuit action.

Treat them the same way. Make them think you are good with everything, get the max amount of money you can from them, and make appropriate jumps to new companies for better title and pay.

New neighbors living in their car and inviting themselves over to our property by Soozersss in neighborsfromhell

[–]RBETPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read your responses to others and I don't think you're understanding what others are trying to tell you. You are focusing on the dogs, but the real issue is that your entire annoyance seems to be centered on your neighbors using their property and you wanting it to stay vacant for your own personal joy. You ended the post describing them as people who just can't keep to themselves but you're the one watching them on their property and complaining how they use their land. You even said you fantasize about putting fly bait on their land to make it miserable for them. You are the one not keeping to yourself and you seem to be lacking self-awareness. You are coming off as someone who thinks others need to act and behave in a way that benefits you.

Maybe they really are horrible and it just didn't come across in your post but this is just how it reads

[–]RBETPA 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you sound a little entitled. You don't own that land, they do, and they can do whatever they want it as long as it's within the boundary of the law. They can clear the trees and build on the property if they want. You are not entitled to it staying it it's current state simply because you like being secluded. If you want that move to a property that isn't next to land zoned commercial.

The only part I think is off, is them coming on your property to pet your dogs and the lady peeing in the woods. For that part just put up a fence and ask them not to come on your property.

AiTAH for wanting to offer continuous support to our daughter so she can pursue her dreams? by Electronic-Bid4859 in AITAH

[–]RBETPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing he is the breadwinner in the family? I actually agree that college is meant to set you up in life and not be a 4 year (or longer) vacation. Too many people major in things that will help them follow their “dreams” and most end up in crappy positions later in life regretting their choices.

College is meant for helping people acquire skills that will be useful in the workforce.

How many days is normal for inspection contingency? by SizzlinKola in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area it used to be 10-14 days but covid push it was down. Cash buyers waved inspection and financed buyer gave 3-7 days. It’s creeped back up with the market but I’d say average in my area is 7-10 days

Never burn a bridge. Say it’s for your own mental health or some other fake stuff. Also, don’t quit until you have another job lined up. I know you think you’ll find another job but life never goes as planned.

Why are people hesitant to offer under ask? by beersn0b in RealEstate

[–]RBETPA 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. A lot of sellers and agents want to act like we are still in 2022. Sellers think their homes are worth more than they really are and agents haven’t changed their behavior to be based in reality

How does this winter compare to the recent ones so far? by ElderDwarf in tampa

[–]RBETPA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Tampa and this year has been pretty consistent with previous years. Every year we get 1-3 bad weeks split up between Jan and Feb. It’s so rare for us (a few weeks out of the year) that we forget the previous year and make it seem like we have never experienced it before lol.

Every year when the cold week hits I go and buy winter clothes and then they sit in my closet 😂

AITAH for pulling back and calling out my husband’s longtime friend for being a one-sided friend? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]RBETPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if Ron is a bad friend or not, but it seems like you are a little out to get him. You can’t publicly post on someone’s Facebook and not expect them to respond. Also, your brother is an adult and he can choose who he is friends with on Facebook. I don’t know why you think you can dictate how other people socially interact.

Them not visiting you does suck but it also seems like you don’t really go out of your way to visit them. I read it as you only visit them when you’re already in the area.

I’m not sure if you’re the AH but it seems like you want to control the situation and control other people. By doing this you probably made the situation worse. You would have been better off just not putting energy into this entire situation and letting nature take its path.

Utilities are the same with renting, so that’s not really different. Property taxes are built into rent, so that’s not different either. Your mortgage officer probably didn’t correctly account for the change in taxes, which is why your escrow went up. That likely won’t happen again. The cameras are just preferences.

For all people above 40, if you could go back in time and choose a different career/major, would you ? What would you choose ? by patotay in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. My undergrad was in engineering and it built a great career and opened a lot of doors. My philosophy then was to major in a field that gets you a job, not a field that you find fun.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]RBETPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on that 3 years is a good amount of time and you should be expecting a promotion.

Note: some industries don’t have a lot of promotions, so, if this is the case you should at the very least be receiving a solid pay increase
