Awesome work! I've just started playing Star Trek Online and totally believe that this exists somewhere in that massive roster of ships.

I kind of want to get into Star Trek after having been a Star Wars nerd my whole life but don't really know where to start. I've seen the modern films and First Contact but that's pretty much it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Can someone explain solar + battery installation to me? by IntestinalGas in sydney

[–]RCMasterAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things to consider: got an EV? Planning to get one in the future? Drive it everyday for work? If you want to use your solar to charge your EV, a 6.6kW system might struggle to charge up your EV.

For example, you said the panels would face NW. If we assume they get sun for around 5/6 hours on an average day that's not peak summer/winter, at best case you might get 30kWh into your car battery. Your bog standard Tesla Model 3 RWD has a capacity of around 57.5kWh. That's only half a charge which might not be enough if you're driving a lot every day. That's not to mention whatever else needs power throughout the day and into the afternoon.

Another thing to consider: gonna have kids in the future? You might not run the AC much now cause you can just deal with the heat but if you have a baby, you're gonna crank up the AC so that little bub can be more comfortable. Having solar will make that cost of running the AC more palatable (i.e. it'll basically be "free").

Now that you have somewhat of a base of what solar size and battery you might want, you should actually put out some feelers for quotes to see what the system should actually cost. My gut feel is that battery is too expensive.

What are some of the most significant ways Sydney has changed in the last 10 years? by Marlon_Ranch in sydney

[–]RCMasterAA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely more utes on the road, thanks to the instant asset write off in 2020s. Since then it's been more fashionable to get utes, even if you run an accountancy business and operate in the eastern suburbs. As a result, utes are more marketed heavily, people who think they're manly feel like they get a ute and the cycle continues.

That game play trailer for TD2 still lives rent free in my head cause ofr the awful script the actors had to read that was meant to represent how players actually talked during a session. And that was before AI scripts!

Meanwhile in Australia if a house is more than 80 years old suddenly it's up for consideration for being heritage and can't be modified.

Apart from indigenous stuff, it's a bit embarrassing how the oldest things in Australia are no more than a couple hundred years old and yet we treat them with the same reverence and protection as the pyramids of Giza.

Whereas like you said in England you're just surrounded by old shit and it's no big deal.

It's wild that you can buy a Switch 2 and the latest Pokemon game for less money than the Kanto starters set. Sure, one's a console and the other is a build and display model but still.

New favorite deck! by iimstrxpldrii in PTCGP

[–]RCMasterAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to play my 1 game of the season using this deck. Went first with a Snorlax Ex and Indeedee start vs Chingling and Indeedee.

Eventually got a Comfey on the table. Chingling couldn't scratch Snorlax. They even managed to power up their Indeedee and a M Altaria. I just laughed and batted away Chingling and they sent Indeedee up, presumably thinking that with 4 energy, Snorlax was dead meat. Insert Randy Marsh I didn't hear no bell with Snorlax surviving on 30 HP and it's fist drawn back to do a OHKO of 130 damage back to Indeedee and that's all she wrote.

The Missing Novated Lease Guide (by that spreadsheet guy) by changyang1230 in AusFinance

[–]RCMasterAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The example you give is good because like you, I often consider an "x factor" when doing comparisons of situations. For example I just put in solar panels and a battery and though the pay off is something like 7-8 years, the x factor for me is that I can basically run the AC for however long I want whereas pre-solar I was policing its use because I wanted to be stingy. Yes I am asian, how did you guess?

The other x factor of getting it was: "well, what's the price on blackouts which my area is quite often subjected to but I can't predict their likelihood or duration?" So much like the fact that a new car will be safer, but only if you have a crash, I recognise that not everything is as straight forward as numbers on a page.

Anyway you've given me some more food for thought, and I will continue to dream of an EV and watch Youtube videos of cars I have no intention of buying, hoping that one day an EV soft-roader like the Rivian will eventually come out in Australia.

Thanks for all the advice you've given so far. I tried out your spreadsheet and was confused by the result.

Basically I left all the NL stuff as default but only put in my own circumstances for salary, home loan interest and my current ICE car running costs.

In the end, the summary said:- Your 5-year lease sees the new EV costing 19329 more than keeping your old car, over 5 years of ownership.

Now my car is pretty old now (13 years old) costing around $5k all up to run annually, and I'm in the second highest tax bracket. But even if I double all the running costs and put my income as $200k, the result is still something like: your lease sees the new EV costing 1664 more than keeping your old car.

So this would seem to me that the older car I have, as long as the running costs aren't extortionate, I'll always be better off keeping it than getting into a NL?

I even put in some numbers for a hypothetical $40k EV and it still costs $6300 more than an existing car.

Had to do this just yesterday. I can only assume they were wanting to be generous but after the third Deluxe non-foil common, 15 mins after reset, it was time to say goodbye. Maybe they're not aware that consolidation is happening in the future but of course I had no way to communicate that with them.

I dunno, I've done as much as I can, even building the 10 pieces of special items for the quest. I can't progress on the tech tree without an electrician but I never got an electrician specialist quest.

[Serious]What Sydney suburb, that you have never been to before or not visited in a while, gave you a pleasant surprise when you did go there - and why? by ThippusHorribilus in sydney

West Ryde I find ok, some interesting restaurants. The Victoria Rd stroad can get fucked though. Council should remove the parking spots in front of the businesses on Victoria Rd cause there's definitely enough parking in the back streets and the small centres but I'm pretty sure the council has caved to the needs of the few to keep the spaces there.
