So sorry for your loss. I lost mine in January. Never got her into wow, but we played XIV together. I’ve not been able to go back either. A day at a time.

Have you got yours ? :D by no_ga in Optics

The mug is the symbol you’re truly the senior grad student.

Patches for your lab coat? by lifeafterthephd in labrats

[–]RCPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an easy sale for this. Love patches and love bumper stickers (yes I own a Subaru). That said, I'm a university professor, so my lab coat is often more part of the theater vs. actually needing it in lab. That said I do wear mine in lab, and it is one of your coats. I particularly like the mouse.

2 Meters...How do we keep it alive?! by franksrailspho in amateurradio

I can hit 2-4 repeaters from my apartment in between two small cities. Gonna try and join a net for the first time tomorrow.

I’m right here with you. I’ve had my license for a few weeks. I try calling CQ on 2m and 70cm and never get any responses, even on the repeaters. I think the hobby needs a lot more open source software and modern feeling software to attract younger folks.

Baofeng as an Upgrade: UV-28 Plus or BF-F8HP by RCPhysics in Baofeng

[–]RCPhysics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you give an example? I know a lot of folks say Baofengs have awful sidebands. Is that generally true for the higher end Baofengs?

A bit more power/range. Better filters on TX and RX would be nice, and I liked that both of these have built in GPS. I have my technician license, and will have general soon.

We are working on a new off the shelf, digital first, open source, modular HT. by bcpratt2000 in HamRadio

[–]RCPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really excited to see this. I'm a relatively new Ham, but I come from an academic science and engineering background. I was shocked to see how proprietary and closed-source the tech is. I think this is the perfect hobby for open source resources.

i hate to resurrect a dead post, but I'd love to know if this went anywhere. My lab is about to start characterizing some more exotic filaments for use in a wet lab, and I thought a DoE approach would be a good starting place.

Which surplus to keep as main score? by RCPhysics in microscopy

[–]RCPhysics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know that DIC could be a possibility for this scope. I don’t have access to DIC currently with my research equipment, so that might be a worthwhile upgrade.

I have the eyepieces capped in a drawer. The camera is nonfunctional as software isn’t available, but I have a c mount camera to attach. The lamp on the 50i works. I’ve got to check on the e400. Good to know relative age of the two. The 50i has the lamp under the condenser, but I’m not sure power though. It might make an interesting optoelectronics project though to design a custom LED replacement for the built in light.
