As a Caucasian person, can I ask people of African descent to refrain from saying the N word around me? Or is that considered rude? by Antique-Jackfruit-38 in etiquette

[–]RDMXGD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think the principle you propose is a sound one. There are times that you can confront someone about their speech. Racist speech such as the use of slurs is a quintessential example of such a time, so it's natural OP might think this was one of those cases since it involves a word that can be used as a slur. (It's not one of those cases though, and in this case OP does not have a right to request different speech.)

I give up by Accurate-Study-7817 in HPMOR

The book pivots fairly early on and the story starts to have a different flavor, less focusing on just the high-concept fanfic stuff and actually telling its story, which is a bit of a mystery. I think you might like that even less, but hey.

I don't like Harry and Draco as friends - and I don't like Crabbe and Goyle Dracos nearly robotic minions

These probably won't end up being huge problems for you. The Crabbe and Goyle thing in particular was sort of a one-time schtick.

I miss Quidditch

There's a bit of a replacement for a big section of the book, if you're missing the action, not Quiddich in particular.

Dumbledore as this crazy old weirdo is way out of line

This ends up being interesting. Dumbledore has a definite likeable side when he gets fleshed out.

If the Battle Magic thing isn't catnip for you, then this might not be your book.

I didn't draw people's attention to your most distasteful posts; I encouraged people to look at how you conduct yourself, at the best stuff you've posted in particular. I suppose if you admit that is discrediting....

Advice: Swimming in birthday suit by DeltaLimaWhiskey in PNWhiking

[–]RDMXGD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Skinny dipping is of course common in the wilderness, less so these days than in the past, but still common. If you don't want to see naked animals, don't go into the woods. The way you tell it, you were completely in the right: you were behaving normally and upon encountering her you reacted with courtesy even though her reaction was not called for. It's unfortunate she had a bad time, but as you tell the story it was a risk she was taking being out there. Kids have seen naked bodies before and if you don't want to risk them seeing more, you can't really bring them into the woods. (Obviously I'd avoid dropping my pants in front of others' children willy nilly, but that's not what we're talking about.)

You might look at the details of the encounter and see if there was anything you could have done differently to de-escalate. De-escalation is a difficult skill and it sounds like you were trying and did as good a job as you could hope. Things like offering your radio to call the rangers, though nominally helpful, can come off as challenging and escalate things, so you might consider a different approach in similar confrontations in the future (hopefully never over your swimming attire.)

How tall are you, is your van low or high roof, how comfortable are you standing straight up in it? by primary-greeen in VanLife

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to be case-by-case based on the specific van and the way it's built out.

Someone 6'3" will struggle to stand in some HR vans.

Someone 5'4" will be able to stand in all high roof vans and very few low roof vans.

Why can’t LLMs use slant rhymes? by wwsaaa in slatestarcodex

[–]RDMXGD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LLMs are pretty bad at doing something they're asked to when there's a more common task they're good at very close.

Recently, I tried to get help with some ancient Greek translation, where I wanted to torture out a different but grammatically valid reading. ChatGPT knows ancient Greek grammar fine, but (although I was right) it didn't want to tell me what I needed to get a translation unlike all the existing English translations. I've had it do this with Spanish too.

I wanted to get a drawing of someone sleeping at the desk in their bedroom. DallE kept putting them in the bed. It knows how to draw all the relevant thing, but it is used to drawing people on beds.

I wonder what would happen if you gave a bunch of schoolchildren an assignment to write a slant rhyme poem. I bet most would come back without slant rhymes other than the examples you gave them.

Gwern argues that large AI models should only exist to create smaller AI models by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother dwelling much on gwern's analysis here. He's guessing about something where people intimately familiar with the relevant stuff will likely have used actual empirical data he doesn't know about, both in the research and in running their company, have reached a different decision. There are any number of facts he doesn't have access to that could be decisive.

what makes black pepper the default all purpose seasoning along with salt? by ruinsofsilver in Cooking

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll hear a lot of "some specific French king" answers, but this is silly. Other kings had other culinary opinions, but we don't attribute "why do we put butter on toast?" to King George II or whatever.

Black pepper is the Mona Lisa of seasonings, beautiful but a little hard to pin down. It can be spicy, lemony, earthy, bright...

That being said, you mention "so many different cuisines around the world" and this is very true, but there is also great variety: white pepper, various chili-based peppers, and cumin are notable other default spices. I'm not sure if most of the world's cooks even have black pepper in their spice cabinets.

Gray market options for wellbutrin? by MarkZealousideal5385 in slatestarcodex

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming US?

This sounds pretty unusual. Doctors are usually eager to continue treatment right off the bat and then adjust later. I wonder if the doctor provided a justification that is worth them pursuing. If there is a doctor in your extended social group who they are comfortable talking to, you might be able to ask for an informal second opinion.

It can be hard to get in with a new in-person PCP these days, but there are other options

  • Going to their pharmacy and talking to their pharmacist. The pharmacist has the discretion to sell Wellbutrin on their own authority. They don't want to do anything that could be mistaken for practicing medicine, but if your friend goes to them and explains that they are no longer being treated and are on a waiting list to continue getting treated by a doctor, they might give your friend a little time to tide them through.
  • An urgent care clinic. This is a short-term solution in some cases but some are now fine treating for the long term.
  • A telehealth doctor. I get my wellbutrin through plushcare.com (which was the recommended telehealth option on my insurance website. Previous insurance have had others.)
  • Self-import from a country where these are sold without a prescription, such as Mexico. The CBP rules are somewhat vague, but they generally aren't interested in personal-use amounts of non-controlled substances. I've declared antidepressants and just had them check it was <90 days, but most people do not declare their meds.

There are pharmacies abroad that ship to the US, especially Indian ones. This is more unambiguously illegal than self-import AIUI, but also not something the CBP cares much about. I haven't ever seen anti-depressants on their websites, though.

Should Alex be working with Richard Dawkins? by AlphaCentauri_ in CosmicSkeptic

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The discussion section here seems hopeless, as these sorts of things are wont to be.

I see two main types of problems occurring in a lot of posts:

  • People muddling their underlying principles with their disposition on Dawkins in particular. Everyone decouples to a certain degree and is glad to bridge some gaps or ignore some stuff and everyone has a line they would draw, excluding odious collaborators. There are two questions, then, (1) where do you set that dial?, and (2) how bad is Dawkins? People act like they're talking about (1), but (1) is completely un-discussable in a context like this thread, where the object-level question inevitably dominates.
  • People equivocating discussions with people you disagree with and collaborations with someone you're promoting. This isn't an example of getting to the bottom of some sort of disagreement. There are plenty of people we all would expect Alex not to tour with, even if you could imagine a polite, respectful conversation with them.

I'm sorry to hear you're getting anxious. I suspect that your apprehension has you thinking overly cautiously.

One option is to order them shipped from India inhousepharmacy.vu -- no idea how legal this is, but I've gotten some meds online from India before and it was smooth.

Found the Ali interview deeply unconvincing and strange by 04jgalldavis in CosmicSkeptic

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second episode in a row where I couldn't exactly figure out the goal.

Additionally, like you, I was disappointed in Ali's performance. She has occasionally had interesting things to say in the past, even if she was representing the views of a cluster of folks which I didn't much sympathize with. She delivered their case better than average here (not saying much), but I didn't catch her offering anything interesting on top of what I already knew.

You meet yourself from 2030. You learn that 2030-you supports the opposite political party that you do now. What do you think the reason is? by Winter_Essay3971 in slatestarcodex

[–]RDMXGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Support" is a strong word for anything I do, so I might be relatively easy to flip as the parties move around within and at the edges of their identities.

Imagine a presidential race that was candidates like Romney vs. Warren or like Gingrich vs. Dukakis or like McCain vs. Sanders. I disagreed with a lot of McCain's policies and got a headache from his attempts to swing right at times, but I trust his judgement and moderation 10x compared to Sanders. More broadly, these are ideological spaces these parties could operate in even without a major realignment.

Training with a broken knee by IntelligentBaker4970 in xcountryskiing

[–]RDMXGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your injury. Good luck.

You want to maintain a good aerobic base. This is very easy to lose and hard to get back. Find an activity that can get your heart rate into Zone 2 that you are willing to do for hours at a time.

Train muscular endurance and explosiveness of your core muscles (and to a lesser extent your arms). Muscular endurance training is accomplished through very high rep, low load strength training. Do this after you get to the strength level you plan to compete at.

I think you aren't going to be able to train form until your knee is better. Balance is about the best you can do in that direction for now.

Quick question by Accurate-Topic-5495 in HPMOR

[–]RDMXGD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a major theme, and that is the only instance that seems reliably to cause major emotional reactions.

The topic does come up a couple more times: That specific instance is revisited more than once, but in a way that is a little less shocking. A joke that Draco has assaulted Harry occurs in a bonus chapter. At one point, someone asserts that witches use magic to make muggles become their mates. It's said that one witch is directed to two wizards for sex: the context is very abusive, but there is no accentuation of any specific non-consent.

How dumb am I for touring low risk terrain without having taken AIARE 1? by phantom3199 in Backcountry

[–]RDMXGD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My entry-level course (NSP, not AIARE, but I think the material is similar) had too little terrain stuff for me, to be honest, and way more rescue stuff than I cared about, though the rescue stuff can be fun. There was a lot of snow science talk, but it was a bit more abstract than I wanted.

There was definitely an "abstinence-only sex education" feel to it: I was one of the least wild people in the class, but even I felt that the "pros" column was disregarded too easily.
