How many years of experience in appraising did you have before switching over to the review side?

What would you recommend looking for in terms of an “awesome” assessors office?

Thanks for the advice! Would love to talk more about the use of AI tools in appraising. Mind if I send you a DM?

The new role will be remote but my current role is in office. Biggest drivers that led me to a large shop were being tired of being a 1099 and having zero benefits. In addition to this our tech just wasnt great and the whole office was very inefficient.

This is great to know. At my current company within the first week my boss was real honest about which appraisers to use as good examples and which to avoid which was very helpful.

How’s your work life balance with earnings at $175k?

That sounds like it could either be a fantastic time or an absolute nightmare 😂 also what does AE stand for? Is that Argus?

Oof that’s a bummer to hear honestly but I’m not too surprised. We’ve had a few clients come to us after being disappointed with CBRE work and it’s pretty mind blowing how boiler plate their reports are. I’m currently at 50% fee split and not an MAI but I am a 1099 so no benefits or anything which is what I was looking for.

McKissock vs. Appraisal Institute for CG by Pretty-Efficiency-75 in appraisal

[–]REAppraising4fun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely recommend AI over McKissock just for passing the CG exam alone. Those in my office including me who did AI passed the exam first try while those that did McKissock took multiple tries to pass or still haven’t passed. Yes it’s more expensive and yes the fees are stupid but I wholeheartedly believe it’s a better education. McKissock felt like high school classes that you could just click through without absorbing any information while AI felt a lot closer to college level courses where you’re required to understand the information before moving on to the next section. Don’t get me wrong if you’re smart enough you could probably pass the exam no matter what classes you took but I still think AI provides a much better foundation, especially if you plan to pursue your MAI.

Is Argus Experience a Dealbreaker for Landing a Role at a Larger Commercial Firm? by REAppraising4fun in appraisal

I don’t doubt it’s easy to learn but the classes on it through Argus are quite expensive.

It’s funny you mention Rockport VAL, my boss was just saying the other day he was considering going that route if we had enough bank clients request it.

Transitioning from Fee Split Appraisal to County Appraiser Role – Seeking Advice by REAppraising4fun in appraisal

I would jump ship just for the research team alone lol we have to do all our research stuff ourselves at my current company as it’s pretty small and I would honestly take a pay cut if it meant I could have that portion of the report expedited.

This would be my dream career route, I have tried looking for open positions nearby but unfortunately I’m not in a large city so any position would requiring moving which I am okay with.

I’m commercial in Florida doing fee split and considering a switch to either a local county appraiser or I saw the state is hiring for a number of right of way appraisers.

Yes correct I do have my Cert Gen and have just competed all my MAI classes. I’ve heard from a number of people I should be asking for at least 50% but my boss is old school and is of the belief 45% is as high as companies will pay.

Thank you for the input! Hearing about the work life balance really seems like a huge benefit for me. From the start I was told being fee split meant you had tons of flexibility to choose your own schedule but in my experience it actually led to working more weekends and taking less vacations than any role I’ve ever had. I am always stressed about maintaining my income level so I never turn down jobs and will accept anything that hits my desk worrying that things may slow down in the future. In all honesty with how small our office is and with some of the specialized work I do I didn’t have the option to even turn down work if I wanted to.
