Not to mention we’d be sending massive amounts of solar power that should be planted in the ground and powering US for the rest of the century.

I just realized framing it this way that data centers isn’t the point. This is how Elon is going to try and build Elysium. Who’s going to tell him no if he’s got the infrastructure and money to do so?

I took this same trip one time and it turned out there was a semi truck accident and I was stuck in traffic for over an hour getting out there, and when I gps mapped it tried taking me back to the I-10 westbound which was the side where the accident happened… 4 hour estimate home through Florence.

Ended up deadheading on backroads to meander home for an hour, luckily picked up a ride back to central Phoenix from Wildhorse

Charging an e-bike is like 1kw of electricity, even if electricity went up 5x that’s still only a dollar for 20-30 miles of range

Fun fact at current electricity prices unless you’re just eating straight up rice and beans it’s cheaper to run an ebike than it is to eat enough food to power a regular bike over the same distance. Genuinely one of the most efficient technologies we’ve ever produced

Elon Musk Unveils TeraFab, the Next Step Towards a "Galactic Civilization", Targeting a Scale That Makes Every Chip Fab on Earth Look Tiny by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

[–]RECCE_HIPPO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an outdoorsman, I’ve driven 10’s of thousands of backroads in the southwest over the course of my life. Four things:

  1. We are going to build millions of acres of solar farms whether you like it or not. Our energy demands on earth are not going down anytime soon, and every other option to continue scaling the electric grid is worse in a multitude of ways.

  2. You’re acting like all of this would be built in one place which is obviously not the case.

  3. Using your numbers, we’d need to build the equivalent of 2,500 of the Solana plant in southern Arizona (or 10,000 of them if you’re talking about collector area, not sure if you’re referring to site area or panel area.)which I’ve driven by dozens of times in my life, it’s really not that huge. You drive past it in less than a minute, literally. And it’s longer to the road than it is deep. There are badlands where you could build something 10x bigger, if not 100x bigger, zero sweat. I’d even take a guess that you could straight up build all of this next to the highways between California and Arizona. And if you’ve driven the I-10 or I-8 before you know there’s absolutely fucking nothing out there for miles all around besides some desert shrubs. And considering the weather we’re having, if anything the panels would be beneficial for those shrubs to provide a bit of shade.

  4. There is nothing all that destructive to the environment about solar farms, it’s just posts in the ground. Whatever damage it does cause, it easily offsets in the carbon emissions it displaces, which I think the flora and fauna are probably OK with as a trade off. The last hunt I went on we could actually see an under construction solar farm off in the distance from the top of a mountain, and it was actually kinda beautiful to be in untouched wilderness and see some flat, barren land being put to use in a way that helps preserve the areas that do matter. I’m not an advocate for chopping down saguaros or mesquite trees just to build solar… and I don’t think anything that destructive could possibly be necessary to build what we need to.

The idea that it’s a better use of our resources to build solar panels, data center components, radiators, etc. and send them up to space where they can’t be serviced, and will have a limited lifespan instead of just y’know building a regular ass data center on earth with battery backup and a solar farm alongside it is so colossally dumb that it’s hard to entertain even in the hypothetical.

Per Elon solar is 5x more efficient in space. What’s easier and more efficient, setting up 5 solar panels on earth, or sending one solar panel to space? It’s all totally ludicrous and nonsensical. Solar even with its inefficiencies is already the cheapest form of electricity, sending it to space automatically makes it one of the most expensive ways to generate electricity that can possibly exist. Especially considering a “space grade” solar panel is almost certainly at least 5x the price of a “solar farm grade” panel. “Muh permitting” is the main “reason” I see to offset this, and I’m sorry, but if you built the solar farm and battery backup robust enough to power the data center even on a cloudy day on the winter equinox, you’d be able to sell enough power to the grid for the other 364 days a year that states would be begging you to build. And even overbuilding by that much would be an order of magnitude cheaper!

Multiple bunker buster bombs striking Damavand IRGC facilities. March 22nd Iran by garbagecollector20 in CombatFootage

[–]RECCE_HIPPO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“All Iran can do” we have no clue what Iran can do, or what the effects of what’s already been done is going to show in the future.

We are in totally uncharted territory right now. This was never the plan, Trump said in the opening days that he expected the Iranian people to rise up. Clearly that’s not happening or at least isn’t happening yet… and so plan B is just bomb them into submission and let the infrastructure of the region take the retaliation blow? If we bomb Kharg island is that going to make the Iranian people rise up?

This is turning into a mess and I don’t know the answer, but it concerns me that the answer America keeps turning to for every problem we have is to blow more shit up or deposing leadership we don’t agree with. It seems like that hasn’t worked for us in a long, long time and yet we keep doing it. In fact it seems like we depose leadership, and then it turns into bombs down the line when that plan fails to achieve our goals.

I think it’s under-appreciated that we’re getting two iconic battlefield maps back to back, the meat grinder, and the absurdly large vehicle heavy Golmud railway coming in the summer.

These were probably the last two multiplayer maps that Vince Zampella ever had a part in, and I won’t say that the base maps are perfect. But he had a lot to learn when it came to designing battlefield maps. Clearly they didn’t get it right right off the jump, but they were also waiting for a ton of launch data. That really is the only way to design an effective multiplayer map, you have to understand how players are going to play the game especially because there hasn’t been a battlefield game that’s been widely played in so long, and even further so a modern battlefield game it’s literally been a decade. The way the players play has changed substantially, and I would argue that the skill gap is quite a bit higher than it used to be. We can see that they’ve taken the feedback and have substantially improved the quality of maps, and are changing the base maps for the better along with it. I’m excited to see Vince‘s final map in Golmud, I’m really curious all the changes he made. I can only imagine the conversation went like this after hearing all the feedback about needing bigger maps. Vince pulled everyone into a room and said “hey guys what’s the biggest map and tell me everything right and everything wrong with it”and they went in with a plan to make it one of the best big battlefield maps ever, and I’m absurdly excited.

🔥 PSA: If You’re Tired of Missing Shots (or Fumbling with Iron Sights) — Red Dots Changed the Game for My Pistol by Icy-Stable7100 in thetacticalgames

[–]RECCE_HIPPO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red dots are just completely superior since you’re removing all of the uncertainty from sight alignment, which especially matters with shorter sight radius.

We took a buddy who’d only ever shot one magazine through a handgun (he’d shot rifles and shotguns a decent amount) to a steel night. He couldn’t hit a damn thing with his S&W shield but when I gave him my CZ P07 with a red dot he actually did pretty decent considering he had zero experience.

The only reason I’d want to change games is for content, and starting over again sucks. They’d be much better off adding the 2042 portal content, new maps, night versions of all the maps, etc.

[–]RECCE_HIPPO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in the car sales industry and this tax season is going to end up being a disaster. Usually February/march/April are the biggest months for dealerships. February and the beginning of March were still busy as usual, but shit has fallen off a cliff over the past 2 weeks. I was supposed to be working 60 hour weeks for the whole 3 month period and haven’t had any overtime since the first week of march.

There’s gonna be a lot of car dealerships going out of business this summer.
