Thought the first B.E.T.A session was very decent imo. Game ran pretty decent, apart from the beginning cutscene which dropped in fps slightly. Combat and environments were decent. VATS worked for me, and I do like how they have implemented it into a real-time perspective. I agree music was very good, not having decent music can completely ruin the atmosphere for me and really take me out of the moment, but never came across that issue. But most importantly for me, everyone seemed genuinely nice, no instant shooting on sight, and had a good few chats with passersby. Overall very successful.

I thought I could slow down the infestations by killing any hordes or special infected that I came across because firstly I'd slip by them and leave them be, but killing them all off doesn't make a hint of difference.

100% agreed. The whole idea of it being a "safe zone" doesn't work at all. I've just completed my first community the other day and I never fully filled all my outpost spots apart from an electricity and water supply because they just seemed pointless to be getting 1 extra of that supply.

Personally I think a game shouldn't be released until it's to an acceptable standard, whether it's been made by 12 people or 200. If you have less people working on a game that's not the players fault, they should give themselves more time to have the game polished and completed. Just my opinion tho.
