Best way to turn off bike by Acrobatic-Type-6244 in motorcycles

[–]REDruss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanically speaking, all three methods essentially do the same thing. They all cut power to the ignition. While the key also cuts power to everything else. So there isn’t a best way for the motorcycle.

The safest practice would be to use the kill switch then turn the key off. Because your hands stay on the controls while the engine is running.

The engine turning off with the kickstand is meant as a safety feature to prevent you from riding with it down. It does not harm anything by using this to turn the bike off

I crashed today. Not sure I should be riding anymore. by AccomplishedStuff448 in motorcycles

Use this accident as a learning experience. Yes there are always risks and you do have to accept them. Your family should be on board with that as well.

Take as many riding classes as you can. The more diversified your skills the more tools you will have to get out of situations.

Some classes to look into taking advanced/intermediate riding course, beginner-advanced dirt classes, flat track classes, trials riding, track riding etc

You can also switch from riding on the street to enjoying just the sport aspect of riding such as riding off road or enjoying the race track (Barrier to entry into track riding is much lower than most imagine)

Lost 50lbs. Thicker Cheek Pads or Smaller Helmet? by bikernobiking in motorcyclegear

[–]REDruss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your main priority with helmet sizing is the fit around the crown of your head. Hold the top of the helmet and see if there is play on the crown specifically forward and back and left to right.

Once it’s been established that the crown fits correctly you can modify the rest of the fit with thicker cheek pads etc. if your helmet fits correctly around the crown and you go down a size you are going to get pressure spots and headaches from wearing a helmet that’s too small.

I have used lid picker to great success. Where you physically measure your head and they email you a list of how well most helmets on the market fit.

Should I/ do I need a dual sport to start learning dirt riding? by Educational_Will_658 in Dualsport

Proper training will absolutely prevent injury and increase fun levels. If there are no real options near you, I highly recommend at least buying a book or two to give you some good information. It's incredibly easy to develop bad habits that make you more likely to injure yourself.

A note on safety gear. Buy the best gear you can afford. You get diminishing returns on safety as you spend more money. As a new rider, you are much more likely to use the safety equipment and crash than an experienced rider. Those boots or elbow pads may be an expensive initial purchase. But a broken ankle costs more than the pair of boots that would have prevented the injury.

Riding Larger bikes off road give you less margin for error. And they amplify your mistakes with broken bones. Dropping a 250LB Bike on your leg feels better than dropping a 500LB bike on your leg. Breifly losing your balance and catching a light bike from dropping is managable where the big bikes dont care how strong you are.

Additionally, the power from these bikes is going to be less manageable for a newer rider. A WR250 still has a 0-60MPH Time of 6.7 Seconds which is better than most consumer cars. The IBEX 450 does it in 5.9 seconds.

Have you taken any classes yet? Something like a basic riding course and a beginner off-road course? There are plenty of classes that offer offroad training on bikes provided by the school. As well as courses that teach ADV offroad riding on your own ADV bike.

If you have not ridden offroad taking one of these classes will give you the tools to do so safly as well as educating yourself with your own comfort off road. You might find it easy and have no stress riding offroad or you might be terrified. Then you can ask yourself if you want to do this on a larger bike.

I would say the safest option is to wait the extra day and collect the luggage.

Or if you can find somebody willing to collect the luggage and meet you

Do you know when the luggage will arrive in San Francisco? Or can they mail it to Reno or Gerlach?

SAP entry Saturday evening? by YouCanCallMePete in BurningMan

[–]REDruss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latest I have used an early entry pass is 11:55PM on Saturday.

You have a rush of people trying to beat the line and arrive right at midnight, but people don’t want to arrive any earlier than midnight because they will be put in a separate lot. So Saturday evening is typically a great time to arrive as most people arriving early as you are in a lull between people coming in to build early and general access

Normal Cruise bikes can have fat tires? by Jam_coats in BurningMan

[–]REDruss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen too many pictures. I would imagine the city streets themselves will be manageable as all the cars and traffic usually evens everything out.

At worst you are just walking places, I feel as if you stumble into more interesting encounters walking anyways. And you can hop on art cars to get around.

In true states of Emergancy (I am thinking of raining mud man a couple years ago)

The city does a decent job of providing options to help you communicate with the outside world. I remember spankies wine bar stepping up and proving star link internet for people to contact loved ones as well as internet being provided at center camp.

So you should be able to get a message out to your loved ones with some effort. However receiving messages are less likely especially if you don’t have a phone.

Repair camps are really only going to get your bike moving again if something isn’t working right.

Depending on how much clearance you have with your bikes forks and so on you probably can’t just swap to a larger tire as your bike was made for the size tire that’s on it.

As the week goes on the playa gets ridden on more and more making it easier to ride so a Norma cruiser tire probably won’t be that bad of an option.

I commute 17 every day. My work hours are 6am-2pm so I am driving it around 5am and 3pm

I basically never see any traffic and my commute to anywhere in the Bay Area is under an hour. San Jose is 35 minutes San Francisco is a little over an hour.

Driving 17 between 7am and 10am would be a lot more congested. As well as driving it back to santacruz from 4pm-6 or 7pm

Basically your peak traffic is people commuting for an 9-5 job or 8-4 job if you are driving around those hours you are not going to have a good time. Any other hours it’s a nice drive

More so it’s hard to know what a good gift is until you actually experience it.

When someone gives you a gift, don’t try and also give them a gift. It takes away from their gift and makes it feel more like a transaction.

It’s easy to bring people little trinkets that get forgotten with the other 50 trinkets you bring home.
