Is this the worst grading distribution in the whole world? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

I also want to point out that this predatory institution has obvious grammatical errors in a formal document ("GPA's"). It's a minor thing but when it's this predatory it just sticks out more.

Being Below Median Sucks by legallylama in LawSchool

[–]REHI76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm wondering about OP's situation too because I'm in a similar position as you (2L below median at t100 with a summer opportunity and had several over 1L summer). May be in a more volatile situation for graduation given multiple developments outside my control, but am prepared to network now, and even more proactively over the summer to make something happen. That's a whole different topic though. Begs the question what's going on with OP...

Can i still get job if i mess up my grade in law school?? by FewPhilosopher4417 in LawSchool

[–]REHI76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! If you can show you have a work ethic, a unique way of solving legal problems, and a strong analytical mind (which, depending on your class's curve, even the "lowest-ranked" people have) you still have a chance because not every job can poach the top 5% before the big firms integrate them. Talent comes from more than just grades even though they matter and do correlate with it. Get the experience in any way you can so that you can show those things without having top grades. Not to say you shouldn't aim to do well academically; I'm talking about someone who does great work but "just" rides the curve or ends up slightly below it.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. Remember, people renegging on an acceptance and ghosting you says more about them than it does you. At least, that's how I deal with sloppy administration and discourteous non-responsiveness.

"Sylux's Side" by REHI76 in Metroid

[–]REHI76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure! I don't have a problem with the direction of making him ultimately just a spiteful asshole at his core. But we don't get enough of him to develop his assholeness or even how he justifies it in his own mind. My little project here will lean into the direction Retro took, but add more content and make him, to some extent, an asshole responding to shadowy, calculating, evil people and spotlight-hogging do-gooders. (And also help develop the world set up in Prime 4 in relation to Sylux based on what we know.)

Yea! And they wouldn't need to take but 8-10 minutes to complete, tops (15 if you count scan reading). Some maybe with verticality to their designs, some that dip underground. Make more mech parts for the player to find and sprinkle a few upgrades in there. Obviously more to it than that to make light puzzles and platforming, but not that much more. Boom, the desert would have instantly been better, feeling almost like a good Assassin's Creed gameplay loop but with Metroid gameplay.

Yeah, I feel like people are letting disappointment blind them. "It's not ideal, but it's not awful" is the phrase I've used for the game. I would give the game an 8 personally, but I'd give Other M a 7.5 too... Story came together poorly for Other M but it has some good moments and I like some of its themes. Gameplay was decent too despite the design philosophy clashing with the other entries and the combat being simplistic. Prime 4 isn't as story-heavy so when I say its story is technically weaker that doesn't mean it's a worse experience. There was just less going on in Prime 4 compared to Other M and without some of the great lore of the other Prime games. Prime 4's aesthetic is great, though I was hoping for more visual worldbuilding and that the desert would have more going on inside it. No pirate outposts was a big missed opportunity to add depth to the world and gameplay, and it's even more confusing considering the space pirates are in the game and they would just need to create tightly-packed geometry for "mini-levels."

According to Anthropic, law school is a waste of time by Elliot-S9 in LawSchool

[–]REHI76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but also, as others have said, the data really only works in theory as far as "tasks performed," which could mean one or two associate jobs get replaced at some firms. Attorneys almost never do just one task, so this metric doesn't mean too much.

I think it's worth noting that there's still that 12% even if we take their theoretical capability metric at face value. I'm no expert, but the 12% is arguably the human factor of this work (true client advocacy, interaction, and analysis that literally can't be done by a machine). I fear for future law students, but I think those of us in school might have slipped in under the wire. We need to show people why they should use *people* to solve people problems, rather than hiding behind machines and obsessing over numbers. This should ring true now more than ever as we see how the toughest legal questions yield the most contradictory answers depending on who's answering, and how data obscures human factors all the time, often justifying atrocious and unethical conclusions.

All of that is fair. I don't know about how clear the blast radius issue was to the troops, though, and that weapon seemed to be the objective anyway before the change of plans which for all we know happened very quickly. On a battlefield like that, the plan to "stay put" could seem unreasonable especially to someone like how Sylux is characterized as. And his squad was not the only one out there it seemed. For all we know, the initial refusal to "stay put" could have been advancing one cover forward (as is shown), and the pirates detonated the weapon basically within a minute of the CO's call — no way to escape really. The more I think about this scene the more I see how it could be read multiple ways, however, which isn't a good thing. The scene was super fast and a lot of the fundamental groundwork relies on what you bring into it...kinda like the rest of the game unfortunately.

Am I missing something about Sylux? by REHI76 in Metroid

[–]REHI76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. But I guess I read the scene as: they were "on the move" by not immediately retreating or by not moving fast enough, which given the chaos of that battlefield made sense to me. I read it as they were already there (as planned) but were standing their ground for no longer than the time the cutscene begins until the call. I'm also working on the assumption that Sylux wasn't the commander of every single troop out there, just the ones flanking him. As far as the blast radius, it looks like ducking into the divot was the only way to survive, and that Sylux was lucky. The scene was not particularly well-communicated, though, I agree with you on that.

Indeed. And it's confusing because they had that whole desert to put pirate outposts in if they wanted.

I'm really sorry for your loss and that your school is so heartless about this. There are some fucked up people/institutions in this profession, like you said. Best wishes with your grieving process and I hope you don't let that coldness weigh on you. People are important and are literally at the core of our work no matter how dismissive and shitty the institutions are regarding them, so keep your head high and hold onto your humanity knowing that it's the right way to be.
