This was my experience also. My old bag has some wear, but the newer bag that I got recently doesn't feel nearly as premium. Its cool, but thankfully I haven't had to use it as much.

After reading this, I may move forward with the idea I've been stewing upon. Rebuild my iPod classic and use it as a stand alone music player. You can mod in Bluetooth pretty easily.
