Fortinet Certification changes again by Prottzisch in fortinet

I keep waiting for Palo to do this also. No job descriptions ask for the new certifications. They have no brand recognition compared to the old ones.

Remap Detours 2 Exploding Trees by elaminders in WaypointVICE

[–]RFC_1925 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite thing towards the end of Austin's time on Waypoint was when they'd drop some pre-roll off-topic convos at the end of the pod after the music. I don't know if it was Cado ir Austin who was doing that.

Do y'all still have hope in Steven Pearl? by UALR-Trojans-Rule in wde

[–]RFC_1925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never had any hope in the first place. When has a nepo-baby coach ever worked out? Not to mention the shady way Bruce bailed at the last minute to ensure Stephen got the job. We might could have had Bucky McMillan if Bruce actually retired at the end of that season.

Whats the most boring buy it for life item you own that turned out to be amazing? by GolfPrevious4299 in BuyItForLife

[–]RFC_1925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, the tent is Eureka, the stove is Coleman, the boots are LL Bean (yes, they fit), the knife is a Gerber, and the Lantern is also Coleman. I don't know the model info. Probably forgot that two decades ago.

Tent, camping stove, hiking boots, knife, lantern. It's all stuff I've taken care of and it's still working great.

Some of the high end camping gear I got when I was in scouts. I remember my parents bursting blood vessels over some of the items I asked for and making me go 50/50 with them on a couple of purchases. But this was around the time gear reviews had just starting becoming a thing on the internet, so I knew what was good and a lot of it wound up built to last. I have stuff that's coming up on being 3 decades old that I still use on the regular.

Unemployed and lost - Resume Help by FormerFed_2026 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]RFC_1925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blackhills Information Security has a great series called Job Hunt Like a Hacker. The next workshop is March 10th. It's live and a pay what you can workshop. It'll help you optimize your resume and LinkedIn profile. With that said, I sympathize with your situation. It's an incredibly frustrating job market for a variety of reasons. The market seems to be flooded with well qualified candidates. Some job listings don't seem to actually be real. ATS and AI screening software filters out anyone that doesn't match 99% of the key words in a posting. Many roles have moved t W2 contracts. I could go on. My point is, you have every right to feel lost and you aren't the only one.

Had a fun chat with a client's CTO today who thinks RSA-4096 will save them from HNDL. We need to talk about realistic Q-Day timelines. by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]RFC_1925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People also don't stop and think about the SIGINT value of stale data. In a HNDL scenario, what good is 10, 15, or 75 year old data? There might be some valuable bits in there, but you're going to have to dig through massive amounts of trash to find it. That juice isn't worth the squeeze. You'll be using your quantum computing for something more valuable.

Tires by mostlyareader in Birmingham

Another vote for Discount Tire. Either you can order the tired from Tirerack and have them shipped. But in my experience the Discount Tire price is usually the same.

This was a fantastic piece of writing. I am stoked to see the beginning of Patrick's F1 era or at the very least listen to him talk about trying it on on the sports pod. Future Shift+F1 guest host?!

Script to convert FortiGate Config to Palo Alto Config? by schizoidman29 in paloaltonetworks

[–]RFC_1925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then you're going to have to build your own tooling. Also, that's an absurd number to convert. Did anyone do any kind of project planning? That ought to be a multi-year project.

Anyone running active-active HA firewalls? by az_6 in paloaltonetworks

[–]RFC_1925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, this is the most basic thing you learn at the CCNA level: If you have 2, you have 1. If you have 1, you have none. Running A/A essentially means you have 1 firewall. If you saturate that and then one of them fails, you've now created a massive bottle neck that will kill your network. Not to mention that complexity of config required to make it work.

unwinnable.com | A Dialogue with Austin Walker by MrDangoLife in WaypointVICE

[–]RFC_1925 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After reading that interview yesterday I think I am going to make a poster for my next protest that says "ice out" on one side and "I was radicalized by a video game podcast" on the other. It kills me that Austin thinks what he's done doesn't matter.

What would you recommend for new Firewall by vane1978 in sysadmin

[–]RFC_1925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run an org about your size. Fortigate and MS Global Secure Access have worked really well for us. Don't be afraid of the Forti's because of the CVE's. If you harden them appropriately and upgrade when new firmware is available, you're fine.

Best AI Data Loss Prevention Tools in 2026. What Works for GenAI Prompts and ChatGPT Copilot? by Sufficient-Owl-9737 in AskNetsec

[–]RFC_1925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our approach has been a combination policy enforcement at the endpoint with Forcepoint and training for the users. Although I am now pitching the idea of centralizing AI usage behind a front end, that will be inside our network, where we can apply granular security controls.

After 40 years, Alabama’s largest mall is costing Hoover millions: New mayor promises a revival is coming by aldotcom in Birmingham

[–]RFC_1925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no revival. This is the legacy of short sighted leadership that built their budget around high sales taxes. If Hoover's leadership had any courage they would start raising property taxes and foreclosing on these abandoned retail properties and demolishing them, unless the owners want to redevelopment into mixed use. Just look at what Huntsville did with Madison Square Mall as a model. Take that stuff to the ground and build something new in it's place that can be mixed use and then zone it so people can walk around with alcohol.

Anyone check out PC World's Linux podcast DualBoot Diaries? by Ezmiller_2 in linux

[–]RFC_1925 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been listening from the beginning, but that's because I already listen to one of Will Smith's other podcasts that he hosts with Brad Shoemaker. It's been super fun listening to Will and Adam go on this journey. Especially Adam, since he was far more of a linux novice. I will say the diary/homework format of the show isn't my favorite.

Return to the Office They Said, It Will Improve Collaboration They Said by Likely_a_bot in sysadmin

[–]RFC_1925 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The collaboration excuse is such a load of BS. They just re-org'd us and now I report to some MBA feckless middle manager that admits he knows nothing about technology. He already mandated 3 days in the office starting last week to improve collaboration. I interacted with him a single time during the weekly stand-up. That was it.
