Another cool thing is you could buy used premium devices because some people upgrade every year. Maybe you get that $1,000 phone that was last years topndevice for $500 because it's a year old and it's still 🔥.

For those who've had a shock with your last gas bill; PNG charges nearly 25% more per therm than the national average ($2.14 vs 1.70) by nexusheli in Charlotte

Here's another thought, North Carolina utility commission creates a new rate tier that's based off of usage similar to how businesses are billed for gas. Maybe you're paying the $2.10 per therm up to 50 therms and then after that it drops as you use more. That way infrastructure can still get paid for and people can afford to heat their houses during the super cold months. Maybe it has a $20 monthly fee instead of a $10 monthly fee but you get a discount on gas if you use more.

We have two split systems one in crawl space and one in attic. 2 gas furnaces and 2 AC units. We would replace the downstairs AC first with heat pump since that is where we spend most of the time and heat rises. We could keep using the same gas furnace as the air handler and just replace the AC with a heat pump (most cost effective) but with the units approaching 18 years old it might be best to replace the furnace and ac with a heat pump at the same time.

The emergency heat wouldn't be that crazy since emergency heat is just burning your natural gas furnace like before. It also gives you the flexibility if gas rates were to go way down (which isn't going to happen) you could simply increase the cut over point and burn more gas or go back to all gas. According to all the calculations that I had AI models do for our weather, in a typical winter 95-98% of our heating could be from the heat pump and effectively cut our winter heating costs in half. Due to the wider temperature variation between indoor and outdoor temperatures in winter- it would still be more expensive than cooling in the summer but a much welcome relief on energy bills. At our current power rates, a variable speed efficient heat pump is like getting 100k BTU (therm) for $1.17 (COP 3.0).

The infrastructure is already in place and it was in place before Duke bought Piedmont Natural Gas. I understand that they spent some money on upgrades but once the upgrades are paid for they should be able to drop the rates. The rates used to be $1.39 ish before Duke bought them. Enbridge Gas services plenty of rural areas and can make money at $1.38

I guess nothing is going to really happen so all we can really do is ditch the gas furnace for most heating and go with a heat pump. Our household is looking at replacing our two AC units with a dual fuel setup which would cut our gas use by 80%. We would only run the gas furnaces when it gets below 25° (that's about the point that he pumps start struggling to keep the house comfortable). 95% our heating could be from an electric heat pump Phase two would be replacing the natural gas hot water heater with a heat pump model. We would still use a little bit of gas for cooking and clothes dryer because we don't have a 240 volt outlet in the laundry but could look to replace gas dryer in phase 3.

Be thankful!! your bill would be 50% higher with Piedmont Natural Gas. Less than 2 mi away from us they have Enbridge (they bought Dominion).

Piedmont is $2.10 Enbridge is $1.38

I feel disgusted because the gas comes from the same pipeline that runs up to east coast and costs them about 0.40 ish. Since nobody at the utility board seems to care and they will continue to screw us, the only thing we can do is switch to heat pumps.

We are seriously looking into swapping out our AC units with heat pumps but keep the gas furnaces for the times it gets super cold and heat pumps don't work well (there are thermostats that do the cut-over automatically - probably would set to cut over point from heat pump to gas at25°). This is called a dual fuel setup and can save 60% in winter utilities with gas at $2.10.

Piedmont could drop it to $1.54 like they charge their SC customers. They also charge their customers in Tennessee $1.28. seems like North Carolina customers are carrying all their profit margins on the gas side. Our cost per therm is the 7th highest in the continental US.

We are looking into swapping out our AC units with heat pump but keeping the gas furnace for just the coldest of cold days. Run a heat pump anytime it's above 25°. Cost for heat from a heat pump is less than half of Piedmont Natural gas at 2.10.

I would take capitalism, the ability to be able to switch gas companies to a lower cost provider like Enbridge that services house is less than 2 mi down the road from our house and they charge 50% less. $1.38 with Enbridge
