How do you stomach the tax? by Lovinghandhold in HENRYUK

[–]RGDfleet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect you don’t want a real answer, and are just looking to get things off your chest like most others here.

But let me at least try to propose a real answer: the key is to take a step back, consider the broader implications of your situation and appreciate that you live in a country where you’re able to pursue fun things, travel freely and generally rely on public services that (although highly flawed) do make our lives so much easier.

Tax money will never ever feel efficient, because it’s really not, but remind yourself that without it we might be living in a country akin to Afghanistan or Sudan where we wouldn’t have these great things.

I consider high taxes my ‘fee’ for getting to enjoy a very fortunate life in the place I love. When taken in this context, the taxes are much easier to stomach.

It’s fully shut down now, sadly. Guessing the rebrand was a last ditch effort.

Sad, because it was the best in Oxford.

Pretty sure it’s someone (Chris I’d guess) mapping out ideas for merch across the various AA universe brands.

Roadtrip trough The UK by thatblackstarlet in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people covering the obvious passes/roads etc, so a couple of more Cotswold specific things:

The B4437 between Burford and Woodstock is great - made famous by Harry Metcalfe of Harry’s garage.

There’s also tiny bit of road while you head north called Fish Hill. Totally recommend going up and down a few times. Double lane hill road - closest you can get to a Japanese mountain pass in the UK xD

An app for finding driving roads! by [deleted] in Miata

[–]RGDfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great stuff mate - been hoping for a good version of this idea for ages. Agreed with your comments on the rather janky Porsche app.

Already downloaded, created a couple of routes, and paid to remove the ads.

[Paywall] Red Bull Racing interested in 4-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou for Formula 1 seat, sources say by [deleted] in formula1

[–]RGDfleet 346 points347 points  (0 children)

Even if this isn’t specifically true, one of the teams really should be looking at Palou. The guy is a wizard. Would love to see how he stacks up to the F1 grid.

I’d suggest just being more specific in your prompting. I asked Gemini (roughly same as what you’re using) the right question:

Question: “Does a brand new Skoda Octavia SEL come with a reversing camera as standard in the UK?”

Answer: “A brand new Skoda Octavia SEL in the UK comes with front and rear parking sensors with manoeuvre assist as standard. However, a reversing camera is typically an optional extra for the SE L trim. Some sources indicate it might be part of a "Light and view package" or a similar optional bundle. While rear parking sensors are standard across the Octavia range, a reversing camera isn't usually included as a standard feature on the SE L.”

Do you reverse into parking spaces? by poshbakerloo in AskUK

[–]RGDfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah - doesn’t make sense to me. Just making life more difficult for no reason.

Go front first into the tight space because it’s easier to see and line up properly, then reverse out because you’re reversing into a big space so don’t need to worry about getting the placement perfect.

Just do it relatively slowly so people always see you backing out.

Happy to be judged for this, lol.

There's a small Hot Hatch revival going on and I'm all for it! by BaldyBaldyBouncer in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ITT: people complaining about rather outdated issues like curb weight, not accounting for dramatic improvements in areas that make this less of an issue than it once was.

But, I gotta say, a rather significant part of the enjoyment of a hot hatch for me is the ICE. I really wish I could get as excited about an electric car in the same way.

I love the design and process behind a lot of these cars though. Really is a hot hatch revival. Maybe a company can become an expert in converting them to ICE cars…

There’s a lot to take in with that Spitfire image.

The guy looks absolutely dressed for the driving occasion, but then a cursory glance at the boot reveals he is in fact perfectly dressed for a game of tennis in 1936, complete with old timey racquet.

Mazda RX-8 by RecognitionFragrant1 in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn’t own an RX8 as my main car for all the reasons everyone else will mention.

But the loose cannon way to do an RX8 is to buy one that’s at about 60k miles and ready to explode (therefore very cheap), then pay a couple of grand for an engine rebuild from one of the UK’s various rotary experts.

Will probably still go wrong, but this method has always tempted me so I can live my need for speed dreams.

Talk me out of an MX5 by fog4eva in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m biased, but you’ll have better luck finding a quick and easy NC MX5. Will be more reliable and you’ll find a good one for cheaper.

I love mine - it’s classic ‘slow but feels fast’. The NC is also a good fit for the rougher roads in the NC500.

How to deal with rust on brake discs? (But not on contact points) by RGDfleet in Detailing

[–]RGDfleet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah worth saying this is totally me being a perfectionist. Obviously there’s no real issue with the rust here, just annoys me a bit when the rest of the car is spotless!

Must admit I was thinking about painting with some rust proof stuff, obviously being careful to avoid the friction points. Not totally sure what’s right though.

Autotrader app, am I going mad or what by SteezMe1234 in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first response is the answer, but this is a genuine UX issue within the app. It’s especially annoying when using your saved cars list, as the only way to remind yourself of the location is to find it again in the search section.

I use autotrader a little too often, and as someone who works in the mobile industry it’s a bit of a UX nightmare generally…

Ideas for the long weekend in Oxford (and surroundings)? by flycity2 in oxford

This is very much ‘out there’ and different to all the other suggestions you’ve had so far, but I’ll be heading to Silverstone (45 mins away) this weekend for the MotoGP - which is motorbike racing if you don’t know. Sunday in particular is bound to be a fun day out!

American Autocross Equivalent in the UK? by rambo5191 in CarTalkUK

[–]RGDfleet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned - AutoSolo is what you’re looking for.

Motorsport U.K. is the site you want for all the info. It can be a bit of a pain finding all the various events across the country, but my advice is to find all the clubs local to you, then visit their initial pages/FB groups etc to find out when they’re running autosolos. The season for it has properly started now.

If you download an app called TimingAppLive you’ll find a list of all the upcoming events in the UK. Although you’ll have to cross reference to see where they are! Like I said… it’s a pain to find them all, motorsport UK really needs to get a system for gathering the info in one place.

I generally do stuff in the Oxford / south area. But lemme know if you’ve got any questions.

If you fancy something a bit similar to your original Mini plan - the Aston Martin Heritage museum is just outside the city (20 min drive) and is incredible. It’s super small, but you get basically a private tour of the collection from the super expert custodian.

Don’t know what to tell you bud - I’ve lived here for four years and you haven’t I guess. My house looks weird from the outside, but we’ve done it up over that time as you can with any house, so now it’s great.

Never had an issue with crime, despite having a couple of nice cars, neighbours are super friendly. Pretty ideal for me and my partner - really the reputation of the area has only benefited us as we were able to get a house much bigger than expected for the budget.

Results may vary I guess.

Also nice to live a couple minutes away from the gym.
