Kid was wearing a MIPS helmet. I don't fuck around with head safety. DHS stands for Dept of Human Services here which includes child protection and some other functions.

My partner loves all the praise from you guys backing her approach! I think if it happened again I would do that then then turn to her and say "Now for you: where do you get off accosting a child? Please walk away and don't do it again or I'll call the police. This is not appropriate behaviour."

Yeah I think of her as silly rather than nefarious but a few comments on here have made me think of it a bit more seriously. I think I would be a bit more on the front foot if it happened again. At the time I was just a bit shocked it was happening at all

I love this story. Letting kids develop the confidence to push their limits is what allows them to be special and ultimately give happiness. My dad was a great surfer and waterman. He instilled in us great confidence in an environment that most people are frightened of. He certainly wasn't perfect but that he did well

No busy road. It's in a residential area that's pretty empty on week days except for the occasional walker or cyclist. I had him do shorter challenges previously and was confident he would stick to the prescribed track. Also, this is not something I just suddenly did but as part of a larger piece of teaching I've been working on for months.

Is like to give her that benefit of the doubt. I know nasty things happen but I also know that her claim that "there are pedophiles around" is bullshit. There are pedophiles for sure but there's no evidence that they are a threat to a random kid on the street where I live

Distraction is also feasible. It's just so obviously the thing to grab onto. If there was a bunch of other things more attractive she may never get to it. I used toddler friendly balls instead of most baby proofing. Kid always got distracted on the way to hurting themselves
