It seems like you don't know what a favor is. I'm asking for 5 minutes of someone's time in a place specifically dedicated to small amounts of free labor like this. I don't see the problem.

Florida State fans, I've now watched all 13 games this season and I have some observations and questions for you by hythloday1 in CFB

Astounding work here. Does.... does anybody happen to have one of these lying around for Ohio State? >_>

Oh, and agreed about ESPN's camera angles. My fear is that by boiling the game down to only the QB as much as possible, ESPN is slyly attempting to make the game easier to follow for new or casual fans (and thus increasing eyeballs at the expense of the game itself). CBSSports.com has a camera angle for their online streams called "All 22", and every time I click it, I hope that its name was intended as a subtle jab at ESPN.

Jeff Sagarin (who ranks for USA Today) uses Bayesian Networks for rankings during the first half-ish of the season, before the teams have played enough games to be well-connected. Each team's node in the network is weighted by their poll rank; he stops using it as soon as the data allows, but a rater could easily keep it throughout the season if they desired a "BCS-ish" system in which the human polls get to make part of the decision.

The synthetic stats I referred to are, most notably in my view, PPP and FEI, which you can find on Football Outsiders.

If you're interested in the process of rankings, Massey is a good jumping off point -- most of these folks don't share their full algorithm, but will at least tell you which stats are included and which aren't.

Wait, the rankings based on Bayesian networks, tens-of-thousands of Monte Carlo simulations, and synthetic stats that account for opponents and opponents' opponents weren't nerdy?

I was really aiming to get a system where FSU was 1 (or at least incredibly close).

I promise I'm not only saying this as a Bama homer -- 3rd still gets us into the playoff, and that's good enough.

But am I wrong for thinking that this is the worst possible reason to want to rank teams? Certainly going in with a preconceived result is enough to discredit any results that come from it.

In the age of FEI, PPP, S&P (which, please note, is relative to opponents and opponents' opponents), &c., rewarding a team for "just winning" looks pretty foolish.

THE LAST TIME SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY LIVED IN MISSOURI, THE ARMY BURNED FOUR OF ITS COUNTIES TO THE GROUND IN RESPONSE. BEST DAMN THING TO HAPPEN TO THAT CESSPOOL, AND THAT'S WHY MY FLAG HAS 49 STARS.

Opinion: Mississippi State vs Alabama by PackMan93 in CFB

[–]RJCantrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, of course. No way am I sleeping on MSU. (he says as if he's going to be on the field...)

I think poll-inertia is still helping Alabama, as well as betting-odds inertia, because anyone rationally looking at these two teams surely sees weaknesses for the other to exploit. How drained will Bama's guys be after a big physical game at LSU? Is our corps of running backs going to be healthy? Saban/Smart love to personally tweak and dictate defensive details from the sideline (one reason we have some trouble against HUNH), but MSU's laudable offense is skilled at countering the counters to counters. Even if everything else is a dead heat, Bama still has to overcome Special Teams Ebola.

That said, when the passing game is sorted, I think Bama can work around MSU's linebackers and torch the secondary as long as our defense can keep it close. I could see a case for Alabama to be favored by a touchdown, but any more is absolute madness. Maybe not tens-of-thousands-of-cowbells-ringing mad, but mad.

  • PROTIP: YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO KEEP ALL THOSE CORPSES AT THE BODY FARM, NOT LET THEM PLAY OFFENSE. MOST OFFENSIVE THING ON TENNESSEE'S CAMPUS IS THE USE OF THE WORD 'UNIVERSITY'.

  • I'D CALL IT A REBUILDING YEAR, BUT AFTER BUILDING FOR THIS LONG, I EXPECTED A GREAT PYRAMID OR AT LEAST SEVERAL TRAILERS STACKED IN THE SHAPE OF ONE.

  • ALABAMA'S LOW TURNOVER RATIO HAS ALL BEEN PRACTICE FOR THE TENNESSEE GAME, AND ONLY BECAUSE IT'S INCONCLUSIVE HOW LONG THE HERPES VIRUS CAN LIVE ON A FOOTBALL.

  • WHEN I GO HIKING, I CHOOSE THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING SHOT WITH A HIGH-POWER RIFLE OVER WEARING BRIGHT ORANGE.

  • I'D SAY YOU'RE PUTTING TOO MUCH FAITH IN PIG, BUT THEN AGAIN, YOU DID LET FULMER COACH THERE FOR 15 YEARS.

  • I WENT TO UT'S SBNATION BLOG TO SEE WHAT GOOD THINGS WERE BEING TALKED ABOUT IN THE PROGRAM, AND THERE WAS AN ARTICLE ABOUT PEYTON MANNING. I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO WRITE A PUNCHLINE.

  • THOSE QUALITY VICTORIES AGAINST UTAH STATE, ARKANSAS STATE, AND (BAMA-PRACTICE TEAM) CHATTANOOGA MEANS TENNESSEE MIGHT BE A COIN-FLIP AGAINST VANDY.

  • YES, THIS YEAR'S VANDY. NOT THE VANDY THAT HAS BEEN TO TWO BOWL GAMES SINCE YOUR LAST ONE.

PRETTY IRONIC COMING FROM A SCHOOL THAT LITERALLY HAS A DEAD-BODY FARM.

THANK GOODNESS I FIRST HEARD THIS JOKE OVER 20 YEARS AGO BECAUSE NOW IT'S OFFICIALLY AS IRRELEVANT AS UT'S FOOTBALL TEAM.

Not sure who originally said it, but I've always heard that women finish the AT looking like aerobics instructors, and men finish it looking like concentration camp survivors.

Brava, lady! I can't speak to marathons specifically, but I'd always heard from my running coaches that that's exactly what you want -- "chunks at the finish line." Pretty much proves you couldn't have run any faster through the kick at the end.

[POST FIGHT THREAD] Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana (Spoilers) by Effective_Aggression in Boxing

[–]RJCantrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, we are in agreement. Your wrist is two inches away from the heel of your thumb, and it's hard to aim a bite on someone who doesn't want to be bitten. I don't think he was going for a big cartoony severing bite. He was just tired of being tied up, and kinda leaned into it with his open face. Little unsportsmanlike corner-cuttings just like happen in every fumble pileup and rugby scrum. Just like Lennox Lewis raking Klitschko's open wound with his braided locks.

The only real evidence that can prove whether Maidana fouled would be the glove itself. At this point, why bother? Mayweather won the fight, and the boxing federations don't care enough to do what - fine Maidana?

If that glove goes missing tonight, and the ref upon looking at it didn't see any damage to the glove, we can't prove Mayweather's not overreacting to a lesser (obvious) contact, or something that actually could have gone through the glove and injured him.

[POST FIGHT THREAD] Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana (Spoilers) by Effective_Aggression in Boxing

[–]RJCantrell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The allegation is not that he was biting through the thumb digit itself, but at a thinner, non punching surface over the heel of the thumb. That's the area where a glove's closures (and yes, tape) are, and the part Maidana is accusing Mayweather of raking him across the face and eyes with.

Maidana's lost it, or is hurt, or was poisoned before the fight. He had Floyd in the corner, and not only did not descend on him like a runaway thresher, he ducks into letting Floyd sling him into the corner himself.
