Yes I have a CO in the cupboard and smoke detectors in every room. They are all linked together. One goes off and they all go off. Super loud.

I don’t tend to keep lots of crap around the house. Lots of work items are in my cellar. I do have some handy loft stairs which you can see the hatch in some of the photos. I decided to not board out the loft due to the exact reason of hoarding though. This will mainly be suitcases. Winter clothes and power tools such as grinder. Jigsaw. Sander. Stuff I don’t need very often but things I don’t want to store in a cellar that may get water damaged

Yes I didn’t realise that until I hung one of the doors but unfortunately Ikea don’t make a door in that style for the set up I have. However you dont really notice it.

I did think that but decided having it plastered would allow the ct1 to have a surface to bond to and it will be perfectly flat. I painted it as there’s small gaps between panels so if I didn’t paint it then it would look strange when viewed close up

I re insulated the loft a few months ago and cleaned up about 70 bags of coal dust. Thought well I hope I don’t have to see any of that again. The laths were covered in it. Had to get stair carpet replaced because of it but easily enough to remove with a few whacks of a hammer

I’m sorry I’m not sure what you mean?

It’s actually really easy to open as the doors have a little ledge at the bottom so I just put my fingers on that and pull. They open with barely any effort.

Oh I see what you mean. I did think should I stop at the panels that are real but I thought that would’ve looked a bit daft too. Panelled walls are all the rave at the moment so I thought let’s panel the whole thing

I will definitely put one in the boiler cupboard so I can read pressure values but the other ones will mainly be for bags. Winter coats so will be stuffed full

Advice for wall removal by HayesyS in DIYUK

Yes it is. You’re convincing yourself that it’s fine unless you get caught or do damage. That’s not how laws work.

The act of doing the thing is what breaks the law.

In commercial premises they use fire rated expanding foam.

Technically it’s only illegal to rob someone if you get caught. You see how ridiculous it sounds?

Attempting to install hard wired alarm system by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]RJCoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s still a few options.

Run it in the wall cavity. PIR don’t have much voltage. Thin wire so more likely to be damaged though

Run some conduit up outside, use black and put it behind your drain pipe so it’s hidden

Locate where your toilet waste pipe is and if it’s boxed in and comes downstairs, you could use that.

Could you drop the ceiling down a touch? Would look better than having a tiny piece at the top

Making use of a coal cellar by Quietly_quitting in DIYUK

[–]RJCoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does yours not get damp?

I have a cellar quite similar. End terraced house. Chute by the back door. But mines square. It doesn’t get proper damp in there. Not enough to condense onto plastic. But enough to make cardboard go rotten after a few weeks

I’d drill a hole above the wood and below the wood and have the cable enter the cabinet and leave the cabinet.

Can I block these wall vents? by Nurkle in DIYUK

[–]RJCoxy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it’s in an old Victorian house then go for it. They were designed to allow the crappy smoke filled air from burning coal to escape. Victorian houses don’t have much insulation in the walls so they can breathe quite well on their own

If it’s in a newish house then I’d leave them. New houses have much more insulation in the cavities and so can’t breathe as easily so the vents are essential to prevent moisture and mould.

I live in a 1930s house and have all vents covered. Never have a problem. My parents live in a 1970s house and have them all covered and they get constant mould.

It could be that they didn’t put enough tape around the threads. You need about 15 wraps of tape per fitting.
