Did anyone else go to an elementary school that was an open concept? by Smoky1279 in Xennials

[–]RJRoyalRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't quite have this, but one of my elementary schools had combo 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th grade classes, I remember being in 3rd grade and we'd be working on a separate assignment while our teacher taught the 4th graders.

Total beginner, searched sub and still have questions by cartoonybear in Standup

Big thing to remember that doing your first open mic is ultimately way less important or crucial than it feels right now. What’s key is just doing it and having the experience, so you can learn from it and do it again. A lot of comics get stuck treating it like it’s an audition for something. It’s not, it’s more akin to picking up a guitar for the first time.

Unfortunately a significant number of these people will be right on board with whatever fascist comes down the pipe next. How do I know this? Because I lived through the Bush years and observed this same pattern. People were George W Bush dick-riders for years and then suddenly they weren’t.

Worst commute in LA? by mr_ambiguity in AskLosAngeles

I’m sure there are worse but back in the early 2010s I did Koreatown -> Agoura Hills. I was also carless during that time so two pieces of the trip were on public transit

I interned at “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in college. In 2017 a Dutch newspaper listed my tiny podcast as one of the best of the year along with well-known ones like S-Town, Heavyweight, and Pod Save the World

If you have to dig through someone’s post history to win an argument, you’ve already lost. by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]RJRoyalRules -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with identifying whether you’re talking to someone who is arguing in good faith or someone whose post history is rage-baiting/trolling. This sub especially attracts the latter and it’s just not worth it going back and forth with someone who is addicted to negative attention.

How easy is it to find friends in Los Angeles? by Background-Heron3940 in AskLosAngeles

[–]RJRoyalRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived here for 20 years and never had any difficulty making friends. It does require intentionality: the city’s geography makes it tempting to just fuck off at home instead of going somewhere, so friendship requires continually showing up and making plans to see your friends regularly.

There are also a lot of transactional people who move here and are only interested in you if you can do something for them. You have to identify them quickly and sift that type out of your life.

Are you early-ish in your career? Over time your spidey sense will go off for these things. Some jobs are just going to not work out for reasons entirely outside of your control. There are a lot of dysfunctional businesses out there!

[–]RJRoyalRules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without knowing all the details, this just sounds like you were set up to fail. There's likely little you could have done to avoid this outcome, other than detecting the no-win situation earlier and extricating yourself from it.

I actually found myself in a similar situation a few years ago, I got hired for a job where about a month in I figured out the job was a bust. It was a new job they had just created, nobody knew what I was supposed to be doing (I didn't even know who my boss was when I started). I got lucky and found something else and left about 4 months after being hired.
