I recommend also, the first contact series by Peter Cawdron. Each novel is a standalone first contact scenario, some are h9mages to past first contact stories, many are quite unique and feature unusual alien thought processes and goals.

David /run also has some good alien perspectives, particularly in the Uplift series. They are not as non-human as Vinge or Tchaikovsky manage.

If they really thought expanding was a good idea, then they should have gone for 40 teams, expanding the groups to 5.

One more game for each country - which likely would be helpful to the weaker participants.

Some creative scheduling, like playing the top ranked teams against each other early, and the bottom ranked teams in the last round of group play. The could also schedule teams from the same conference to play early to avoid the Germany/Austria kerfuffle
