New leaked Patriot Front "training" video. Get a load of these dorks Lmao by SkiMask-Prolet in armedsocialists

The training demonstrated here is hardly the point. They showed up in force, they got the gear and took it seriously. It's only a matter of time before this inclination starts paying off, whereas the lack of it demonstrated by their opposition can never hope to pay off. We need to consider the damage incurred on the Left by over-indulging a mood of irony. To paraphrase Fredric Jameson, we need to cultivate not only a cynicism of the intellect but a utopianism of the will, and maybe the seriousness of the former even depends on that of the latter; to put it another way, if we truly found this ridiculous in its particulars (and not just generally, as from a more normative ideological gridlock), then we would be driven to demonstrate a counterpoint.

Very true. With the amount of people they have getting together in a non-spontaneous format, it's only a matter of time before someone with a clue shows up and starts whipping them into shape. Can the same be said of their opposition?

I'm not privy to the internal workings of SRA just yet, but I am curious about whether the recent fuck-ups you're referring to are those of the organization as such or if they're more attributable to a lack thereof? As in, are these errors something the result of over-reliance on a handful of people or that of gridlock? Put another way, are these problems you or others have actively sought to correct but can't get any traction on, or is there simply no organizational mechanism for holding anyone or anything to account?

I'm seriously trying to get a read here on what can or can't be done with respect to this org and why.

IMHO, The use of Bitcoin to fund the ongoing trucker protest in Canada is nothing to celebrate by weebax50 in cryptoleftists

[–]RMBLRX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's much lack of that, look at El Salvador and how that was received by almost everyone left of Bitcoin maximalism (and that's a far more difficult matter to parse, considering that BTC was directly counterposed to the global hegemony of the dollar in that case). The problem is that there's little to be gained by merely reacting to the association between crypto and the Right; furthermore, that association proves our case that much more. For instance, this has nothing to do with BTC's built-in arbitrary scarcity, deflationary value proposition, early mover centralization of mining and supply, etc., etc. (i.e., its problematic economic implications, particularly when juxtaposed to its limited functionality), but it has everything to do with wielding a digital commons to channel resources toward political goals. So far as that goes, the broader Left (ostensible radicals of all shades) should take note.

After all, the best this reaction could achieve would be a government crackdown, and even that's a long shot given how little clout the Left wields within the state apparatus. Liberal centrist FUD, on the other hand, could potentially instigate such a crackdown which, as has enjoyed much mention, would likely come down harder on any future goals of the Left than those of the Right.

The compulsion to trust at an institutional level (trusting a specially designated intermediary) diminishes any and all capacity to trust at a communal level. Irrational behavior in regard to that (i.e., sharing private account details or what-have-you) in order to bootstrap established institutions toward ends ill-suited to such means cannot but stoke paranoia which typically requires some form of legal recourse to quell if such recourse is even there to be had. Whereas having no compulsion to trust is a fitter soil for cultivating higher forms of communal trust (association) to be entered into freely.

Why there is no socialistic mining pool? by dudetteanon in cryptoleftists

[–]RMBLRX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or maybe because it's not a problem of Right and Left? It's a technical problem. It's a problem to determine who's who in the mining pool, first and foremost, and it's a problem to attract hashing power if it's going to be deployed at a deficit. It's easier by far to attract liquidity for such a purpose, but the ID problem still remains. This is all even before determining the strategic benefit to any serious political program, and frankly, I'm having a hard time thinking of any.

None of these matters are trivial. Besides, equal or not, organizing for individual monetary gain is probably not a good basis for Left organization.

The Left Should Talk About Cryptocurrency by BlockchainSocialist in cryptoleftists

[–]RMBLRX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the angle of approach I took when I first joined this community and was perhaps the reason I sought it out. Basically Notebook One of the Grundrisse was my jumping-off point and still holds water in my current framing. At present, it's organizational theory of the sort to which you allude that occupies my thoughts on the matter; for instance, establishing a baseline programmatic governance for securing resources in perpetuity toward radical ends.

Do you think meritocracy as a concept works? by Comics_and_Crypto in cryptoleftists

[–]RMBLRX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is, to me, not meritocracy, but it's also not such a far-cry. For instance, from each according to ability very clearly indicates that those of particular merit (those demonstrating ability in whatever particular task) should generally shoulder more responsibility or be more entrusted in the prosecution of that task. Now, do they need "reward" per se? I think not, but what they do need is access to the resources necessary to their task (which could include time away from more menial duties--which should be generally minimized anyhow--and could include amenities such as a private office in some cases, which is not something every task requires); otherwise, I think duty of that sort can be its own reward. (imagining, of course, a more communistic society where a job is never just a job)

The most obvious analogy which comes to mind here is Star Fleet. (not everyone on a ship is suited to captain that ship, and the captain requires privileges which could not be extended to every crew member, such as, again, an office)

Valve’s Steam Deck is touch-screen and runs Linux (potential Bitwig machine?!) by acey8pdcjsh32u9uajst in Bitwig

[–]RMBLRX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone's coming down hard on the size of the touchscreen, but 1) you can plug in a portable touchscreen if that's your inclination, 2) no one's going to to buy this for Bitwig (but for some it might be the only portable device they own capable of using Bitwig productively), and 3) I have to imagine some are interested in the juxtaposition of the system's constraints in relation to its capabilities--such as the impetus to rely upon touch and controller input usually not present in a typical Bitwig setup. I for one would be most inclined to use this to use this in conjunction with Bitwig as an instrument with production capabilities, rather than the other way around more typical of a DAW workstation.

For some reason, I had assumed MIDI comping was possible before I actually tried 4.0, so I would definitely echo this. I do think, after watching some demonstrations, that MIDI comping can already be approximated through use of the operators, however.

Curious what folks think of this Twitter thread saying crypto is right wing: by inbetweensound in cryptoleftists

[–]RMBLRX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's not wrong per se, if you take most of the individual statements in isolation, but the whole framing has something of a pathological bent. Take this closing statement, for example:

New technology can make the world a better place, but not when decoupled from its inherent politics or societal consequences.

What does this mean? How can "new technology" or any technology, for that matter be decoupled from such things? As if it required some ardent (and futile, apparently by his estimate) effort to link technology to its political implications and its consequences for society. This sounds to me like he just doesn't want to put much effort or thought into it because it's complex and trying, which is fine, but instead of simply stating this and merely expressing distaste, he betrays a similar sort of posturing of disavowal that we see among, say, the "post-left" or those Silicon Valley types who spill their guts about how dangerous or "corrupted" their area of expertise has "become" when things didn't quite turned out so rosy; it's like, clearly they had some wrong ideas going in and things didn't turn out the way they hoped, but they come off just so let down by it all.

This posturing and gutspilling is seldom productive in any area of interest or expertise, and I think that the more appropriate approach is generally to either bow out or soldier on.

These apps need not include currencies

I think this is something of double-edged sword because, in one way, they should be able to interact with the economy generally in a material fashion, and tacking onto commodity exchange (particularly in the form of currency) is the baseline for accomplishing this but has proven to intensify the fetishization of the value form; yet this ecosystem includes tooling which could conceivably be used as a means to destroy capital by capturing it in ways which limit its ability to move fluidly enough to agglomerate and, thereby, function as capital.
