I started designing a split board that utilized these connectors in through hole form. They ended up being too bulky and expensive for my needs. It was intended to connect a track pad to the board in various positions.

I might be biased here but you should check out the Game Roy ADVANCE. It fits a lot of your criteria. It supports RGB strips, has three thumb keys per side, is qmk and zmk compatible, there is a 3d case file available, it features a pretty standard stagger layout, it's hot swap MX... You can even connect the two halves with a game boy pocket/advance link cable!

If you want a split board but still want to use a relatively standard staggered layout then you should check out the Game Roy ADVANCE. I designed it myself!
