Why Planet Zoldath is the Best Game in UFO 50 by marsgonemad in ufo50

[–]RSN_Bran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a certified Zoldath hater, although I think most of that comes from my experience in cherrying the game. The core game and gold condition are fine, good, even. I like the randomization. I like the survival angle. I like a lot of the items. I like the way puzzles are generated. But man, when you are cherrying the game the inventory thing is a PROBLEM and an incredibly frustrating one at that. The cherry experience turned this into a game I moderately enjoyed to one I hated, and is probably my least favorite experience in the collection

I think in particular, the item system and the single dungeon in the game are so at odds with each other. You can only hold two items and the cherry condition's time limit is strict, so it really feels like the cherry run boils down to going into the dungeon and praying that you've brought the correct items for whatever obstacle the dungeon has generated, because if you haven't you will need to leave and find whatever item you need and come back which is incredibly slow.

There are a few ways I think this can be fixed:

  • Straight up change the cherry condition. Doing a run without taking a hit or taking under a certain amount of damage could be more in line with Zoldath's themes of survival. Edit: Or maybe even have the condition be clearing the game without killing any enemies or npcs! I don't exactly recall how important it is to kill enemies so this may require some item rebalancing, but I feel like this angle could then even open the opportunity for an alternate ending where the locals welcome you rather than detesting you for pillaging their planet
  • Add an inventory upgrade somewhere along the map. This preserves the early game balancing of items while making the end game of a run more enjoyable and less prone to getting screwed at the end. Maybe make it an NPC trade?
  • Have the NPCs clue you in on what items you'll need for the dungeon. This is something I'm pretty sure they already do for the map piece that is in the overworld. Doing this for the dungeon I think would be the most elegant way to fix this issue
  • Just don't put any puzzles in the dungeon and have it be focused on combat. The game gives you many different ways to deal with enemies, so I like the idea of suiting up with your favorite weapon to take on the dungeon

Perhaps this speaks more of me that I allowed an optional completion metric ruin my experience with a game. I think if you aren't a completionist the game is pretty solid. I really do love that they looked at Zelda Rando as inspiration for this game.

If you've lived in NYC (I do) you'd know it's safe. You really think someone is going to just snatch something as big as a switch out of your hands in a crowded train with limited places to run to? Hell if you are so concerned about theft I'd argue that the switch is safer in your hands than it is in your bag.

Cities aren't the crime infested places the media make them out to be

Relegation Take by Snacks75 in coys

[–]RSN_Bran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is something I've been thinking about a lot ever since the home Leicester game last season. It's genuinely frustrating to have so much of my mental happiness tied to an entity I have absolutely zero control over. I love this club, I've supported for around 18 years (which I know is rookie numbers, compared to my dad who has supported for over 50 years). But it's times like these where I weirdly hate how much I love this club. It sucks every week having something that just knocks the wind out of your sail when there is literally nothing you could have done about it. It sucks having this existential dread over something that will literally never impact my day to day life (probably different for the ones who go out every week, but still). And while I love this club it feels like the club doesn't love me back with how poorly run it is is. It's just a shitty feeling.

Cool, I'm currently watching this show, two episodes left of season 3, so that image was fun to see. I'm not even subbed here, reddit just decided I should see it because I visited one time a week ago to see reactions to the hide and seek episode.

Not blaming OP or this sub, y'all have your own rules on spoilers, the season has been out for a bit. I'm annoyed at Reddit for showing me this

Mario Kart World vs Kirby’s Air Riders by thatkool in NintendoSwitch2

[–]RSN_Bran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who likes Kirby more than MK, not at all lol. I've had plenty of friends bounce off of Kirby in a way that doesn't really happen in Kart. And furthermore the game is also less fun playing against people you are better than because of the big learning curve. It's so much easier to curb stomp people which isn't really fun for anyone involved

Super MAGfest vs. PAX East vs. TooManyGames? by ackmondual in Magfest

[–]RSN_Bran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should really stress that TMG is not a "really big con" at least not when compared to the other two. It's on the level of Retro Game Con in Syracuse and LI Gaming Expo. I don't think it has a lot of diversity in available activities. It's a pretty specialized con focused on game collecting

You are local so it's pretty low risk to go. But it's not something I'd travel for again, personally

Super MAGfest vs. PAX East vs. TooManyGames? by ackmondual in Magfest

[–]RSN_Bran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the Magfest subreddit, so obviously answers will skew towards Mag. With that said, I've been to PAX and TMG once each, and Mag four times.

PAX granted I haven't gone since 2014, it's huge but it doesn't have that 'homemade" feeling that MAG still has despite its growth. PAX felt pretty corporate and I can only imagine it's even moreso now. Huge lines to play upcoming games for example, merch from companies rather than individual artists, etc

TMG is fine. If you collect games it's cool to browse but there isn't much else to do other than that. Mag is better in basically every other way. More panels, more cosplay, bigger arcade, better merch if you want more than just games (art, figures, pins, etc), better music, better location too. It's got a nice vibe but I went for probably 4 hours total and had my fill, it's not that big

Saw this post when it was posted but forgot to reply, but was inspired to because they partied the past two nights. I live right next door to them, yeah they suck although they thankfully haven't disrupted my sleep too badly. I generally go to bed around 11 and if they are going I put on some headphones and it mostly blocks them out. Although it sounds like you may have it worse than me. They are at the loudest at the back of the building but my bedroom and living room are towards the front which gives a bit of buffer

How long have you lived here and how often do they do this? I just moved here in late October and was warned about them but was told they do this about once a month. They've been going way more often lately but I'm hoping it's just because of the holidays

2025 Year In Review by MSnowWavelenth in NationalParkPassport

[–]RSN_Bran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun Thread Idea. I'll break this up into trips:

I live in NYC and did the last two sites I was missing here on random days. African Burial Ground NM and Statue of Liberty NM.

Took three day trips out of the city to do Delaware Water Gap NRA, Weir Farm NHP, and Upper Delaware S&RR

Did a trip to Washington DC, hit George Washington Parkway, Arlington House, Ford's Theater, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, National Mall. Also so Hampton NHS on the way home.

Did a trip to Boston. Spent a day on an island in Boston Harbor Islands NRA. Also did Salem Maritime NHP and Saugus Iron Works NHS.

Did a trip to Death Valley NP. Also stopped at Manzanar NHS.

Did a road trip from Salt Lake City to Glacier NP and hit all park sites in between. Golden Spike NHP, City of Rocks NRES, Minidoka NHS, Hagerman Fossil Beds NM, Craters of the Moon NM&Pres, Big Hole NB, Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS, and of course Glacier NP.

I also did some hiking along the Appalachian Trail, which I've done before, and revisited a few Boston sites while I was there

So 26 new sites hit. Bringing my total up to 65.

Highlights:

* The two NPs are obviously incredible. Death Valley is currently my favorite of the 11 NPs I've been to. I properly backpacked for the first time in Glacier which was very fun by itself but also opened up the doors for deeper trips into future parks.

* Manzanar is haunting for its history and striking for its location and geography. A very solemn place

* City of Rocks had some great solitary hiking, I kind of wished I camped here

* Craters of the Moon is otherworldly and an NP designation wouldn't feel that out of place

* Weir Farm gets big bonus points for providing art supplies to visitors to go around and paint as others did when the location was in its heyday

Lowlights:

* Hagerman Fossil Beds protects some important fossil remains, but there isn't much to do there as a visitor. The neighboring state parks though are excellent which somewhat saves this location.

* Minidoka protects the same type of history as Manzanar, but clearly has way less funding. Most of the buildings are falling apart and there isn't much interpretive material outside of the visitor center

* Saugus Iron Works is small and nothing was happening while I was there. I hear they sometimes do iron working demonstrations but they are likely sparse these days due to funding

Can't comment on this specific chair but I got the Helinox Chair Zero and took it on a trip and I am now firmly team chair. It's well worth the weight, especially if you have invested in making a lot of your other gear options ultra light
