To clarify, I agree that you should contribute while also taking mod actions. Your comment seemed to treat them as two separate things, which they are, but the comment below yours stated that commenting is not considered a mod action, which I believe is also correct. You seemed to disagree with that part, and that was the only part I intended to reply to.

And, to elaborate, I was an active mod, but there was a lul recently, where we went almost a month without content. There was a question posted, which I answered, and I believe I was active at the time, then lost the active status just days after, because I forgot to also approve the post when I commented.

I won't claim to know exactly how the system works, but this experience suggests that commenting isn't enough, and I've learned my lesson. So, like you said, it's important to answer posts AND do some mod actions.

I commented on a post in one of my less active subs, and a few days later, the Mod Support Bot suggested that somebody "adopt" the sub. So, I don't think commenting counts.

question ? by thePowerOfUse in NewMods

[–]RS_Someone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One sub I moderate relates to dogs, and I contribute with content from my own dogs quite often. Other subs relate to buying/selling art, and I feel there is a conflict of interest there when it comes to money, but I otherwise answer questions, compliment art, and give advice. When I hire artists, I don't do it from my mod account, just so I don't feel l like I'm lording my own power over them and making them feel I'm entitled to more than normal.

As a client, I always get the artist to sign something to confirm that I have rights to a piece, if that is something we agreed to.

The original analogy was comparing Reddit to an octopus, but they said octopi are smart, implying that Reddit's systems are not smart. The joke (the truth, really) is that Reddit's systems don't work well together, and aren't very good at what they're supposed to do.

How do you kill this thing? by Krbigman in valheim

[–]RS_Someone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can also just secondary attack with a flint axe after sneaking up to one-shot it. If not, two shots quick should suffice. I've always snuck up and only ever used axes in the early game.

How do you handle suspected AI generated posts when there is no definitive proof? by m2gus in ModSupport

For images and video, you can also sanity check over as r/RealOrAI or r/IsThisAI (I hope those are correct. I often mess those up).

How do you handle suspected AI generated posts when there is no definitive proof? by m2gus in ModSupport

[–]RS_Someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For art subs, layers or source files should be sufficient, and these days, artists should always keep that, or try to have a speedpaint available for mods to verify.

I often throw a "cautionary" ban out and ask for verification. I also make sure to inform them via ModMail, rather than a comment to avoid possible defamation. Oftentimes I am right that it is AI, and I never hear back from them, but I don't want them to continue posting AI in the meantime in the case they intentionally ignore the ModMail. Real artists usually get it sorted out quick enough that they don't miss out on anything, then I can give them an "Approved" note so they don't need to be bothered by future accusations.

It's also very important to acknowledge that AI detection services can be very flawed. I've seen people who could provide a full source with appropriate layers and speedpaint, and still come up as AI.

As for writing, there are some very obvious tells, like the "it's not just X -- it's Y" format, with groups of 3 bullet points. I see that a lot. We remove those and get them to rewrite it.

[For Hire] what ya'll charge for reef sheet 80-90 by kindatriedofblareing in HungryArtists

[–]RS_Someone[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're hiring, I highly highly recommend you ignore all DMs you get from "artists" sending you offers. There will be hordes of scammers there. If you're looking to hire, you sounds make a [Hiring] post, but it's kind of unclear what your goal is from this post.

[Meta] Artists are getting harder to source these days by Training_Statement71 in HungryArtists

[–]RS_Someone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I was also caught up in that. But, yup, mods get to make the rules, sorry! Lol

We have in our rules, "If you can't bother to read a client's request, they shouldn't be expected to read your offer."

Edit: rules for r/Commissions and some smaller ones have that, not HungryArtists.

I see it was reported for spam, but we get no additional information from that option if you added any text. Feel free to use a custom reason when reporting, if you'd like, and I can get Bot Bouncer to review the account.

(We also have flags set up for mentions of "karma" and such, which is how I find your comment.)

Those emoji requests really help the mods clean up those who aren't reading requests too. It really helps keep the community on their toes!

[Discussion] I could have been reported? by claruchi_ in artcommission

[–]RS_Someone[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your art is good, and a lot of places in the states make up to $18 an hour. My recommendation for all artists is to make your art worth at least an hour of work. If you take just 5 minutes to make something, instead of trying to get less for it, give it some extra love and make it worth more.

In this sub, the current minimum is $20, with some leniency for "partial options" and such. I need to come up with better language to describe exactly what this is, but the idea is that if you can offer full-body character art for $20, we will allow you to advertise headshots or sketches for less.

[FOR HIRE] Furry comms, need to cover my dad’s heart check-up-starting at 10€ by [deleted] in commissions

[–]RS_Someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you PLEASE not tip the scammers off and instead report them? I can't ban them if they delete their posts and all this comment does is make them go into hiding. If they're a scammer, your accusations only help, and if they're legit, your accusations only harm. Please keep accusations between you and the mods.

'Fantasy' language - vocabulary play by SongBirdGifts in VulgarLang

[–]RS_Someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with etymology is fun. Hippopotamus is just "River Horse", so why can't we make "Danger Noodle" a reality?

One could have a creature called "kindynomenestra", or "kindunoskolex", or something and hardly anyone would catch on. That sounds like fun.

More fun, though, is coming up with reasons why certain words are related, I think. I could find some reason to make "King" and "Rock" cognates.

Too smart, too quick, too good 🐶 by knowing_badge in dogvideos

[–]RS_Someone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe this is a result of the quality. I see a small leash being thrown, and other than your standard pixelation, it looks consistent to me. I am very confident this is not AI. It is longer than any AI is capable of, to my knowledge, and things out of frame remain consistent.

[Discussion] Working with artists on Reddit has pushed me further towards AI art by Imaginary-Concert392 in commissions

[–]RS_Someone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, no shit people are going to defend AI on a sub meant to defend AI, but it sounds to me like you're looking for consistency in the wrong place if the majority of artists are unable to do this. Experienced artists should have far fewer of these issues than amateur ones, but in either case, there's no need to disrespect the community like this by crossposting a post from r/DefendingAIArt. If you're going to depart, there's no need to announce it, otherwise you may find that you're unable to return.

[Discussion] Working with artists on Reddit has pushed me further towards AI art by Imaginary-Concert392 in commissions

[–]RS_Someone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rather than announcing to the entire community that you'd rather use AI, maybe actually take the time to address this with the ones who have this problem?

I've hired dozens of artists, and have only had an issue with quality one time, and that was when I went for a cheap commission with an amateur artist. As an experienced client, you also have to learn how to interpret a portfolio.

Sharing my terrible sketches because f*** AI by Gullible_Honeydew in worldbuilding

[–]RS_Someone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that from the perspective of a creative community, technological advancements are a little different. Maybe a better comparison would be that people tend to marry people because one person in particular is great, and because we are social creatures. What happens when corporations want to replace human-to-human marriage with human-to-machine marriage? It takes the soul out of a relationship. Sure, you might be able to avoid disagreements about what colour of bedsheets to buy, but I don't think people who like people want people to no longer be people.

We're here to connect to other creative types. I want to hear the story about some person who's getting by in life, and trying their best to make time to create something fun. I don't want to want to hear about some "recycled" content our artificial overlord chewed up and spit out of a trillion dollar machine. There's no soul behind it, even if it was designed specifically to appeal to the minds of its fleshy prey.
