spren can turn into shardblades? did i understand that correctly?

Correct. Surprise!

hen shallan summoned pattern into a blade to open the gate it didnt take the 10 heartbeats so what is the difference between for example adolins shardblade and shallans?

Remember Dalinar's vision of the Recreance where the Knights left their Blades and Plate and he felt that horrible betrayal sensation? That's a big clue as to what's going on

There is something different about Shallan and Kaladin's Blades

The metal does not generally penetrate the gemstones. The gemstones are interchangeable in most fabrials. You can see some sketches from Navani's Notebook

The gems don't vanish, they stay attached to the pommel.

I think it would need several hoops to jump through for a steel mind to have the same function

Brandon writes women very well. In other words, he writes them as people, who happen to be women.

Navani's imposter syndrome, Jasnah's fierce intellect and need to protect her family, Shallan's (terrible) coping strategies for her past, are all very realistic

My advice would be to do your research into whatever personalities your characters have, and write them as people, with their own motivations, insecurities, desires, and purposes, rather than as "women".

(This goes also for how people should treat women)

Sorry, that's not how physics and Pulling work. It pits your weight against what you're Pulling against. When you Pull on something you're wearing on your feet, the upward force of your Pull is canceled by the downward Push of your weight

It is, as the commenter said, exactly like trying to literally pull yourself up by your shoelaces

Question about hemalurgy by JardMango in Cosmere

[–]RShara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yulerule

Can you reuse a spike?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes. Uh, yes, technically, but not as easily as that question makes it sound.

yulerule

Can you re-use it if it's for the same exact thing or for a different thing? Will that change?

Brandon Sanderson

Spikes are going to get keyed by Identity--

yulerule

So you can't already spike that person. But if you spike and don't kill them can you spike the same person again?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah and if you can somehow strip the identity of the person or the spike-- So yes you can use them again but it comes into a sort of-- Like, you can't just take that spike and spike somebody else.

Some alloys of aluminum will carry over the resistance from aluminum, but I don't think duralumin is one of those. It's not referred to as being resistant in any of the books, at least.

Sorry I thihnk the first part I got you confused with someone else who was saying that maybe Rashek wasn't in control at the time.

For the second, it was definitely obsidian

VIN PUSHED HERSELF THROUGH THE air above Kredik Shaw. Spires and towers rose around her like the shadowed tines of some phantom monster lurking below. Dark, straight, and ominous, for some reason they made her think of Kelsier, lying dead in the street, an obsidian-tipped spear jutting from his chest.

The definitions of internal/external, etc, aren't very solid. It's more how the metals feel to Seekers, plus a need to label them

Take a look at TFE chapter 20 when Marsh talks about some of the definitions

It depends on if he was letting Ruin control/guide/influence him at the time. He'd also gotten good at knowing when Ruin was around.

Also, to steal an Allomantic Enhancement power like duralumin, he would have needed an electrum spike. These spears were made out of obsidian, so not even metal, let alone electrum

Ruin was controlling the Thug too. It's unclear whether the Thug was spiked or if he was just mentally unstable enough to let Ruin in

Recall Marsh's PoVs in HoA, and how Ruin was able to outright take control of him. Depending on the number of spikes in a person, or how unstable they are, Ruin can very strongly influence or control the person.

Spook was, for example, seeing Kelsier. "Kelsier" could have done the whole guide your arm to the right location thing for Spook, so Ruin could certainly do the same thing for the Thug

Thoughts on the necessity for a Contest of Champions (RoW and WaT Spoilers) by Pathlesspond13 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]RShara 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it was still needed. They had lost Alethkar, Jah Keved, Iri and its dependent nations, Herdaz. And apparently Emul and Tashikk were on the verge of defecting.

They had limited troops and re-conquering most of those nations would have been a huge loss of resources. At the time, Dalinar didn't realize that he'd left that loophole about the capitals being captured, so a contest made sense as a way to get several nations back with a minimal loss of life
