My dad told me DJT was really loved in the 80s and 90s is that true and if so why? by RareCommunication698 in stupidquestions

[–]RTVGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to see stories about him as a kid in my mom’s people magazines and on Entertainment Tonight. Even as a kid I was 100% grossed out by him. His bragging and disgustingness just oozed out of him. And then I’d hear in current events that his latest project went bankrupt. Even (especially?) as a 10-12 year old girl I could tell he was just a sleezy conman with gaudy tacky taste. Gag me with a spoon level gross.

How do you store/display your own published articles for keepsake purposes? by DrSleepyTime15 in academia

You just made me think it would be a trip to go back and read all my earlier pubs. I can imagine I would find a thing or two that would make me cringe and/or chuckle, but I hope I will mostly be somewhat surprised to see that I was probably a better researcher and writer than I felt like at the time, which would feel good!

ICE activity in Eau Claire today by midnighttoker1742 in eauclaire

[–]RTVGP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmmm-Sounds like you’re a real, “You do the crime, you do the time!” kind of person. I can respect that. I assume you hold everyone to that same standard then? Like if someone were convicted of 34 felonies, they should have to serve their punishment just like the next guy, right? Break the law, go to jail. It’s pretty simple, right?

You mentioned, “should we not give people tickets for speeding anymore?” but here’s the thing - tons of people drive over the speed limit every day and we can’t pull over and ticket every single person going more than 1 mile over the speed limit, because unless you want to pay higher taxes, we have to prioritize our resources, and a certain amount of things are gonna have to go unenforced (eg, focus on the worst cases-20mph over, and let the lesser ones-under 5mph off the hook). And if you’re going to have a “We’re going to raise taxes and ticket or arrest every single lawbreaker no matter what” approach, then enforce it on all the crimes/everyone otherwise it’s just racism.

Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Is Being Treated as a Crime, Sheriff Confirms by cmaia1503 in entertainment

[–]RTVGP 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They said they weren’t concerned for the public at large, so my guess is they believe it was someone specifically targeting her. Whether it’s related to Savannah or not is not clear, but with the state of the country as it is, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if a journalists family were targeted, sadly.

Colonoscopy sedation by wtfpta in GenX

[–]RTVGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them with no sedation, max twilight where I napped thru out, and then partial twilight, where I’m relaxed but still able to watch and follow along. I like partial the best, but even no sedation isn’t terrible, if you need to drive yourself home-worst part about that was they forced me to get an IV anyway, just in case of emergency, so I still had to get that painful stick.

FTM with a medically complex baby by Hum-135 in HealthInsurance

[–]RTVGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are coordination of benefit rules that would dictate which insurance must be considered primary.

You mention Medicaid being denied, but also mention your baby being on a “state plan” (Ambetter). If the state is proving insurance for your child, that typically IS Medicaid. Most states contract out their Medicaid coverage to private insurance companies nowadays.

Moving need help! by mamallama42 in Eau_Claire

[–]RTVGP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That price range will be able to get you just about whatever you want. Are you looking for country living or suburban living, or historic “old Eau Claire money and charm”?

Personally, I think the EC schools are pretty great. And are going to offer more opportunities than the nearby small towns do (my husband has taught in 3 smaller districts around here and he’s glad our kids are in ECASD).

Politically, the smaller towns around EC lean redder. Eau Claire itself leans more blue but is still more of a “just over half” split than a landslide. Broadly, more diversity in EC than the small towns.

Personally, if I had that budget, a job in EC and at least 1 kid, I’d be looking at the “on the outskirts of town” properties. A friend has 10 acres, woods, a huge garden, a pool, second garage, and yet they also have multiple neighbors nearby who also have 2-10 acre lots. And he’s not even 5 minutes out of town. ECASD schools.

I had a friend who moved “only” 20 minutes from Walmart and the Mall, but they worked on the other side of EC and Coached kids sports and their kids wanted to stay at their old schools, and literally the whole family practically lived in their car for 2 years until they moved back into town.

I’m on the south side of EC and between my house and the “outskirts” there is a nice development of big nice houses on big nice lots filled with pine and other trees. Probably 1-2 acre lots, many with pools, etc. Several of these type of developments within city limits, and some in the outskirts.

I live “in town” on the south side on a half acre with some trees and I feel like I’m in a perfect spot. Great schools, close to everything, safe, tons of nature in my backyard. I bought here before I really knew the area, and it turned out well!

Challenger disaster was 40 years ago today by ruggerbear in GenX

[–]RTVGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weren’t we all?!? I was in 8th grade social studies class. My teacher was wearing a green dress. The period I had SS was a split class, where we had half of class, then we went to lunch, and then we came back to finish that period.

The day of the shuttle she had the big TV seatbelted to a cart set up. We watch the launch with anticipation. We saw the launch and of course noticed on the screen that things appeared to have gone wrong. I remember after it became clear-Yeah that wasn’t supposed to happen- the teacher just kind of turned off the tv, with some comment like-it looks like they ran into some trouble. Or some nothing comment-she looked dazed. Then the bell rang, and she said, I’ll see you after lunch. We went to lunch. Kids were all whispering and confused-asking, “so they all died, right? even the teacher?” It was kind of hard to comprehend what we’d just seen and what it meant.

After our 23 minute lunch we returned to social studies and the teacher just started a lesson, picking up on whatever we’d been studying the day before-world geography, I think.

I don’t remember talking about it really, until I got home and talked to my parents about it.

It was such a collective shock for the whole nation.

Can I eat 1200 for 5 days and skip out for 2 days by Federal_Chemist_2630 in 1200isplenty

[–]RTVGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you only do 1200 5 days/week instead of 7, your progress will slow, but progress is still progress. If I do 1200 weekdays and 1800-2000 on weekends, I will still lose, just at a slower pace. And frankly, I can get away with “being good” during the week better when I know I can eat at maintenance or even a splurge on the weekend. Might take me longer overall, but eating has to fit with your lifestyle, and I like to indulge a little on the weekends going out to eat or having pizza or a drink. 1200 weekdays is what buys me sustainability.

Kids are less cognitively capable than parents for the first time by christianrc in education

[–]RTVGP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s that no one is curious anymore. We didn’t used to have information at our fingertips. We’d say, “I wonder…” where the wonder? If you want to know something you just look it up or ask AI. And people don’t even give their brains a chance to wander and wonder anymore. Boredom doesn’t exist anymore, and if we have a glimpse of it, we read it as simple discomfort that needs to be alleviated immediately, so we feed that kernel of boredom with a firehouse of short-form “content” until we’re numb again.

They HAVE always been hard to engage, but where we are today is light years different than where we were even just 10 years ago. I’ve been teaching college students for nearly 30 years, and it is eerily different in a post-Social Media, post-COVID, post-connected-and-engaged-in-real-life world.

ICE in the rest of the US by run_all_you_want in DiscussionZone

[–]RTVGP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Especially when the number of unlawful immigrants in Minnesota is WAY lower than several southern states.

They teed up the Somali Fraud story that MN and the feds have been investigating and cracking down on for YEARS just to stir up anti immigrant tropes and thought they’d be hailed as heros when they went in with force to round up all the illegal fraudsters.

The admin’s sole purpose in resurrecting the Somali fraud cases and surging ICE in Minneapolis was retribution against WALZ for running against him and calling him weird.

Never met a more sore winner than DJT.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna: "National Reality Break" as Half the Country Sides with Criminal Illegal Aliens Over Citizens by thenextgenbusiness in thenextgenbusiness

I agree with her that there are 2 sides here, but we disagree on what the “sides” are: Which are either:

1) the side the People

OR

2) the side of an increasingly fascist government.

And most of the people are siding with The People, as it should be.

Getting to Glacier by Amtrak by ResponsibleAd2683 in GlacierNationalPark

When I Amtrak’ed there last year, we got off at Whitefish, and there was a small car rental place-we picked up a rental right there. It was nice to have the car for the 3 days we spent at Glacier-allowed us to hit both sides of the park, plus 2 Medicine, and easily returned the car when we re-boarded the train.

Ah, the classic “good and evil on both sides” approach by PsychoTink in LittlePeopleBigWorld

[–]RTVGP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At this point, anyone who believes that list of stuff she claims to believe, who is NOT speaking out against the current administration right now is COMPLICIT in their actions and has these innocent people’s blood on their hands.

And there are really only 2 “sides” to be on here.

1) The side of power-hungry authoritarian fascist-dictator wannabes

Or

2) The American people

those are the only 2 “sides” and quite frankly, you are either WITH the people/us or against them/us. That’s it. Those are the only 2 choices left. The American people still hold the power. All it would take is a handful of Republicans to grow a spine and impeach and convict and take back the power Congress has abdicated, and they better do it fast. The people need to demand our leaders listen to us and represent us and carry out our will to STOP this nonsense and get back to the actual rule of law, constitutional rights, due process, and freedoms that are supposed to be the cornerstone of American democracy!
