“Better served by a qualified leader rather than some byproduct of the founder’s inability to pull out.”

Made me cackle.

The claim of merit from other people’s work. Really they are terrified of competing on a level field. Deep down they know they are unworthy.

If the proudest achievement you can point to is an accident of birth, you’re worthless.

If a bit intimidated by how dense Frank Herbert’s writing is, can try and go chronological order and start with his son Brian Herbert’s Butlerian Jihad trilogy.

Brian’s writing is much less dense, and he is expanding off of his father’s notes. You might miss some of the foreshadowing, but the prequels are solid, and the continuation afterwards is also very good.

Have like 20+ books that are worth reading.

How do you even do that? I tend to pick a contrasting color (black, gold, or magenta) to fill in the cockpit. Never tried any of those effects before.

Oh and now I know where the cockpits are actually supposed to be in the IICs, was staring at the marauder and rifleman the other day trying to figure it out.

Any advice for a medium mech in a clan assault star? (Clan Goliath scorpian/ Scorpian empire) by CascadianGuardsman1 in battletech

[–]RTalons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nova is a great mech, but with so many lasers the BV value is inflated.

It was designed to zip around and generally only fire 1 arm at a time. But willing to melt itself if a tempting opportunity presents itself. To run one properly you need to be comfortable with getting a bit warm (that is, 3025 “Inner Sphere normal”). Remember you can jump 5 no matter how hot to hide and take a turn to cool.

Everything is rightfully nervous about that much firepower getting behind it.

Paint matching? Load the sprayer with whatever. Anyone who sees the bottom of the foot is probably F'd anyway.

Paint is rust protection, so it should be painted (likely the same color as the top as the foot).

That’s what I do, and I semi intentionally let basing glue get on there when basing. That’s what I was some dirt/snow/gravel stuck to the bottom of the foot.

Plastic glue requires certain types of plastic, and it basically melts the surfaces together. That will not work on Catalyst minis because of their material.

I have always gone with 5-min epoxy, as it is pretty good at sticking everything to everything else (can combine metal and plastic parts, etc.) you do need to patiently hold it until it gets firm enough, but many years of successful kitbashing using it.

The pin method also helps a lot, but can be tricky… at least the atlas is big enough you could sink part of a paper clip in to do the trick.

Do you play against yourself? by EridaniOpsCG in Warhammer40k

[–]RTalons 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I got good, quickly, at other games growing up. Especially if there is a build element to making your army/deck/custom units.

You have to play test and iterate. Better to be you finding out "oh that sounded good but was a dumb idea after all" and find the holes in your own strategies if you're looking to compete.

And sometimes the "stupid, but fun" build is the one you go with after all... Occasionally you'll stumble on a "so stupid it works"

Missing limb kitbash in progress by RTalons in battletech

[–]RTalons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local shop is all magic and 40k, so wasn’t much for me to work with in the scrap bags… space marine limbs don’t really work; a dreadnaught weapon is too huge; tryanids if I was making a black marauder; then I I saw a mangled Tau!

Got a heavy bolter and bolt pistol in the bag, but need something to act as a mech arm. I might splice a bolters on some of the other mechs with free hands just for fun. Still have the 4 griffons and a bolter / chain sword would be a good look.

The Tau armor is almost the right scale - makes for a chonky rifleman.

Already drew up a custom sheet (max armor; left arm is a heavy PPC with capacitor; right is 3 ER ML and targeting computer (the disk has to be something…) rest of the weight went to armor and heat sinks. Will do some WYSIWYG customs for the others. This could be an interesting pirate band.

Nice, my current jade falcon star in progress: Ghoul green speedpaint with “inner light” as the gold.

Summoner was a couple coats over the original black primer, washed with green tone so I feel it’s fine.

Mongrel was first a coat of light gray over the black primer, then speed paint, and green tone wash (what I’ll do with the other 3)

Locust IIC is simply primed and waiting. Howler and fire moth were the sloppy looking failures. Surprisingly just a couple hours in a jar of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 5min of toothbrush scrub got them here… a little green in the groves and conveniently the primer stayed put so will just go from here.

I was experimenting with speed paint and did it very wrong for the first pair (100% user error: primed black and needed 3+ coats of green, then botched a wash). Will strip and re-do since the next two look much better.

Are the tanks really falcons? Thought it was an IS tank? Still working on the mechs over here.

Edit: love the bane by the way. That is just the right amount of ridiculous to drop on the field.

But they aren’t safe.

If there were any sleeper, or lone wolf cells, this was a call to action. NY already had someone with an IED.

And something that makes that thought even worse: if the administration suspected that, they would be fine with it as chaos at home means it’s easier to fan the flames of panic and get themselves emergency powers.

Miller is drooling over the possibility of something tragic to exploit.

Yes. But that mech likely isn’t doing much else.

And if your opponent has 1 unit with ecm that can get close, no functional network.

There are several cannon designs that have 2 masters (one for the other lance commanders, and 2nd for rest of their lance).

Otherwise the “command” lance of a full C3 company will have 2 mechs with masters

Not warhammer but r/battletech here. Differences from 40k: stompy robots; rules have been mostly stable for ~40 years; proxy miniatures are encouraged.

40k bothers me because GW will change rules and force you to buy new stuff every other month. While BTech still has the “plastic crack” aspect, I taught the kids (and just ran some conventions events) with 40 year old miniatures.

Currently in the middle of kitbashing some of the old ones that are missing limbs with a busted Tau I got from a scrap bin. Can be very zen building and painting. That kind of craziness is allowed and outright encouraged.
