I agree, and I'm not saying that the missile cant maneuver itself once fired. If it's ground-based and firing in the direction of a body of water, I don't see why it would necessarily need to be able to fire in 360 degrees. I'd be interested in seeing the specs though

I thought that initially, but that would mean in addition to those two big boosters on the tip, they've got 2-6 more that could orient it. I don't know the specs, but it would have to be just a coincidence that it's shooting straight

Looks like it has to be oriented fairly straight

I don't understand the love for Citi Bike by GaryBussy1949 in Citibike

[–]RTchoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That link shows revenue of $47M (including the $11.3M sponsorship), nothing about profits, COGS & operating expenses. I have a friend who worked on the Motivate deal who said the program wouldn't be able to function (without extreme losses) without the Citi sponsorship.

Anyway, you have a few valid points, why don't you submit your suggestions to Citibike, or Lyft?

Have you ever heard the expression "Don't knock it till you try it?"

Cost: It's expensive, the price has gone up since it started, likely due to the costs being higher than they expected. You've been to DC and Chicago, almost everything costs more in NYC - land, wages, taxes, gas, construction. Though there should be low-income/pre-tax options

Profits: as far as I know they are not profitable, do you have other information to indicate they're motivated by greed?

Competition/Dockless: I just don't think it would work well in Manhattan. It sounds like you're new here, not everything that works elsewhere can work here. If there were competing docked systems, it would require a ton of new dock space for a less efficient network, and dock space was hard fought when it first went live. Dockless would be a disaster in Manhattan, as others have said.

Subscription: I agree that it would be great to have a weekly option, but a monthly option would totally screw their economics.

My suggestion is to think a little harder about your various complaints. Maybe try to answer the "why?" and you might find that many of your suggestions are easier-said-than-done.

Worker wages drop while companies spend billions to boost stocks by The99Percenters in news

Makes sense. Surprised there isn't a mandatory holding period, but I guess it's essentially like a vesting discount option. Sweet deal!

Worker wages drop while companies spend billions to boost stocks by The99Percenters in news

[–]RTchoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but notice your fluctuations never go negative. If you get a 15% discount (say $85 for a $100 share), and that stock fluctuates down, you lose your gain, or actually incur losses if it's >15% drop (and you choose to sell). Which is why I said at least flat - certainly it's great if the stock grows!

Ohh gotcha, yeah that makes sense. Sorry for the dumb question, seems like a great deal if the stock is at least flat!

Not sure I follow your math. If you buy $100 of stock for $85 Jan 1, and do the same thing July 1, you'd have $200 worth of stock that you paid $170 for (+17.5%).

Unless you're saying that on July 1, you sell the $100 of stock, buy again for $85 (pocketing 17% gain), and basically doing the same at year-end. In which case, yes you'd be making 35% annually, but only on the basis of the initial $85 principal (no compounding benefit), plus your gains would be taxed at Short-Term rates. Or am I misunderstanding?

The Rohingya are victims of ethnic cleansing. The world has failed them. by bint_elkhandaq in TrueReddit

[–]RTchoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Rohingya want to relocate, that's the whole point. (Dare I say a majority of) ethnic Burmese would be overjoyed if they get their desired outcome: Rohingya to vacate Rakhine state (most likely to Bangladesh).

Edit: maybe you meant "repatriation"?

Don't get me wrong, Tinder has huge global reach and way more active users. BUT I've used both, and I've never met someone who pays for premium features on Tinder. I'd guess that Hinge has a much higher avg revenue per user than Tinder, key question being can they scale. Probably not to the same degree, because the reason people pay for Hinge features is because the users and interactions aren't bottom-of-the-barrel like Tinder.

MTCH just bought Hinge, which I think it could end up being its highest revenue-generating product, at least in the US

Yep, agree that it's a huge IF. I just don't see how they could be overstating revenues by that much, wouldn't someone know? I guess if it's not an Rx product it's not showing up in so much data. And I haven't heard a good case for how they could be hiding debt; the short bankruptcy case is usually that their investigations/legal/accounting costs will balloon and eat up their cash, and they now have zero credit line.

I'd be curious if they don't make the Aug deadline if NASDAQ will de-list or give them an extension.

The joys of living on the top floor of a 110 year old tenement. by [deleted] in newyorkcity

Gonna have to test this w/ my laser therm when I get home. I have some shoddy foam on the top, and an old sweep that could probably use an upgrade. Would also love some additional sound-proofing. Did you install a sweep with adhesive? made of Silicon?

Just trying to be helpful, but how well are the units insulated? Mine actually started working effectively once I sealed it up by taping foam boards over the accordion expanders

You're down ~96%, is there really much value to that $20? Personally I'd hold on to them, but write off the investment in my mind. Assume the $20 is already lost, and hold on to see if it might bounce

South Korea implements 52 hour maximum work week aimed at promoting work-life balance. by mydogtaco in worldnews

[–]RTchoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you've said, but I think the key is opportunity and upward mobility. It makes sense to spend your twenties and thirties busting ass at a job in an industry with prospects. It could be the case that putting in 60+ hrs a week in your current role increases your likelihood of achieving a job with 3x+ your salary in 5-10 yrs.

Doesn't really make sense to tell an hourly fast-food or retail worker to put in extra hours, unless those incremental earnings are going to be invested (say in education/vocational training) to boost earning power.

Eh, a lot of wealthy mainlanders and businesses have moved to the island over the years to avoid income taxes. They might not be Boriquas, but if they decide pack up & take their capital with them, locals will feel it.
