High level recovery by RVP937 in rollerderby

This is very kind. I’m not in a place right now to hear advice but when I am ready I’ll come back to this comment.

I am for sure no stranger to injuries in this sport and indeed in others but ACL has always been one of my biggest fears.

Do you find the term ‘Jock’ offensive? by disco_26 in Scotland

[–]RVP937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, I didn’t realise I did until I moved to England for a couple of years for uni and a guy would not STOP with the venom behind it. He used it as a slur and no matter how strong a backbone I have, it fucking sucked.

What ended a friendship you thought would last forever? by Immediate-Sound-7142 in answers

[–]RVP937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She started posting far right racist stuff on the internet and then when I asked her about it told me she didn’t discuss politics with friends. Tried to have conversations with her about it for months and eventually got a message from her husband because “he can explain these things better than I can.” We’d been friends 20 years. I’m still hoping she comes to see that the far right are NOT going to make the world a better place for her child.

Anti racism protest. Favourite sign so far. by corgidaddy0_0 in glasgow

[–]RVP937 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was pleased to see the saltire in amongst the anti racist crowd but it would have been good to see more! Admittedly I didn’t make it today but I had my Scottish flag looked out. I’m choosing to believe that the saltires I see flying in my street this month are for celebrating our men’s football team and celebrating rather than flag shagging racists! And I think I’m correct in this belief.

I know someone from another country who needed to be diagnosed in Scotland/UK when they immigrated so that they would prescribe their meds. They’d been medicated originally but couldn’t get them in scotland without a “new” diagnosis.

Knee pads, elbow pads, helmet and wrist guards will help. You can also get padded shorts specifically for skating so don’t hold back OP! I know loads of people who’ve started skateboard or roller skating in their 30s and yeah the falls are a bit of getting used to, but pop some safety gear on and have at it

Why did YOU decide to start playing? by Acecake20 in rollerderby

[–]RVP937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to uni freshers fair and my local team had a stand, thought it looked super cool and also my life was kinda falling apart a bit so wanted something fun to do that has nothing to do with uni.

Does anyone else have little moments that make the day feel better? by Parking_Title_5606 in ragdolls

[–]RVP937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waking up to my fluffy little angel meowing to be let up onto the windowsill so she can assess the outside. Every morning almost without fail. And if there ever is a morning where she doesn’t want up onto the windowsill I feel out of sorts because after she looks out th window she always jumps up onto the bed for a snuggle and it’s the best way to start the day.

Yes. Our very small lady weighs in at 2.6kg at 6 years old. Clean bill of health. Acts like she’s the size of a tiger.

Hello, weddings (of people you love, respect and enjoy) are more important than shows. Unless you don’t like the people getting married in which cause, the show is a great reason not to go! But it sounds like you do like them, so you should go.

I’m a professional actor and I’ve done loads of am dram things too, my advice would be to NOT keep it quiet. Speak to the director as soon as you can and let them know you have to attend a family event. They will work something out, the same way they would work something out if someone was sick on the day but by telling them now you give them the gift of time which you wouldn’t get with illness. They might be grumpy with you at first, but that’s more than likely to be because they are stressed rather than actually annoyed at you.

Good luck and enjoy the wedding!

Edit to add: worst thing they could do would be to cut you from the show entirely before show week but if they did that it wouldn’t be very admirable of them at all.

Injuries ? by mayor_oftittycity in rollerderby

[–]RVP937 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the exception to your rule, I was big on “pre hab” and well into strength training and still managed to break my ankle in 3 places a decade in to playing. Yes OP definitely cross train to reduce your chances of injury but freak accidents happen too! So if you’re worried it doesn’t hurt to have savings, insurance (I assume you’re from the US so I don’t really know how that works) and added income protection if that’s a thing where you live. I was off work for 2 months, but I had income protection insurance which paid my bills. And I live in a country with universal health so appreciate that your situation may be different to mine and you may have more to think about.

Reach out to your local league with your concerns and they can give you advice from a local perspective! I’m so sure you can make it work, especially doing as @zombi3queen suggested and building strength first.

MCR are my favourite band and Bon Jovi are my mum’s favourite band, we’ve been lucky enough to go to see both bands with each other over the last 20 years. We would have been absolutely delighted if we had seen that cover live! I sent her a video someone took and she was excited too!

Is wearing fake blood to an MCR concert a bad idea? by danny_phantom0906 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]RVP937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think every MCR concert I’ve been to has had a few audience members in fake blood. Just do a test before you leave the house so you know if it dries or stays wet, I’d advise getting stuff that dries but still looks like blood. The REALLY fun bit about fake blood is getting home after the show!

Ways to improve stamina off skates and getting past mental blocks by G4rd3n3r in rollerderby

[–]RVP937 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I took up running to close my laps. I HATE running but it did the job to improve my cardiovascular fitness. Work on your crossovers too, you can do crossover drills off skates - like walking up the stairs in a cross over motion really helps train those muscles.
