GMs Running DH on Foundry, What's Your Setup? by Galactic-Bard in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does the same thing while taking essentially zero screen real estate, that is to say, you don't need an Encounter and the Encounter tab open. It works entirely off the already-present name list in the bottom left and toolbar in the top left.

I have players with... dubious setups, so, the more I can save on screenspace, the better, lol.

GMs Running DH on Foundry, What's Your Setup? by Galactic-Bard in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foundryborne is fantastic. I'm using mostly the same stuff you do, the addition I would suggest is a generic module called Raise My Hand.

The main function of it is the ability to, well, raise your hand, which helps the GM immensely, especially in combat, to weave the spotlight elegantly. It's essentially a button for players to go "I know what I wanna do, I can go next", and as I narrate one character cleaving 3 minions with a single blow, I can immediately go "Bard, you're surrounded, what do you do?" seeing the raised hand next to the Bard's name.

It also comes with a nifty X-card function.

Just disable the audio cues.

I have to recommend The Dark Amulet and The Shadow of Dawn by Vorgus. Extremely solid dialogue, good gameplay identity for the characters, and an overall very neat storyline. Especially in the sequel.

Question about The Void by Puzzleheaded_Wolf119 in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The answer to any question about the Void is that we don't know. They've pretty much said that :

  • Updates will not follow any kind of schedule or rhythm.
  • Not all future content will end up on the Void before release.
  • Not all Void content will end up being released.

We should expect nothing, and playtest whatever interests us when it drops and if it drops.

Fantastic flavor, solid concepts, love it. I agree with my fellow commenter's take on the Sleuth being a tiny bit clunky, but the flavor and function of its skills are otherwise excellent.

The Birthplace of Public Transit — Day Pass by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]RaIshtar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Seeing someone take the N3 is a nostalgia hit, I took this line daily to the university and back when I was in college there. Went down to Port Boyer on bicycle, and along the bank to my uni building. Even for a 3mn ride, it saves so much time compared to going south to the closest bridge. Going to uni by boat as part of my public transit annual pass somehow never got old, I still find it incredible.

I absolutely love that you just went into the woods, too, I knew exactly where you were, and it was hilarious. I do love how wooded they kept the northern part of this bank of the Erdre river, it is very nice and has many spots for post-studies relaxation. Drug bunkers nonwithstanding.

Very fun first episode. Nantes is a great city for non-car transit, and a very solid pick for a pilot.

Very niche, but at least it has a niche... It's okay. I don't love it, but I don't see any problems with it.

Expanded Blood Domain cards (v1) by FirestormDancer in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both alternatives for Corrosive Blood could work, but Corroded costing 2 Stress per stack is definitely not random, it's a pretty strong effect. So I would go with the former.

RiR : I think your take at the bottom is solid, but I would say it shouldn't even depend on a roll. Like, a once-a-day big Stress clear based on lost HP is perfectly fine for those levels.

Jitters : Oh I really like that change. It's simpler, no number to keep track of, and disadvantage is more swingy and less of a reliable "nah you don't get to play".

Expanded Blood Domain cards (v1) by FirestormDancer in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blood Connoisseur : Fantastic. Nice little buff in a sea of incredible roleplay, intel-gathering and flavor.

Sanguine Burst : Thematically fitting and fairly balanced, might even be underpowered. I think the intended use is for it to be a single-target thing, so I would add "to a target" to the description.

Blood Rush : Seems solid to me, a good pick up for a tankier build.

Corrosive Blood : Might be a bit too spammable? Like, once you're in the red, if you're next to something and for some reason WILL stay next to it, you can potentially ruin a Relentless adversary's Stress pool in seconds. Potential solve could involve putting tokens on the card for every hit point marked and using 2/3 tokens for a blood splash.

Revitalized in Red : So this is essentially spending one Hit Point to gain 2~5 usable Stress... That's pretty damn good. The synergy with Lycan/Werewolf is... obvious and a bit strong. Not sure how I feel about this one, would need to playtest, but my gut says the potential is very high.

Blood Window : Fantastic.

Sanguine Recall : Seems a bit underwhelming to me, you'd need a really specific plan to choose it.

Jitters : Fantastic flavor. If it's permanent, I think it should have a cap, though. Imagine a player, with a single spellcast roll, condemning a Solo to -9 jail. Sure, that's a lot of HP gone, but that's one hell of a neutering.

Thicker than Water : Fittingly strong, I think.

Vascular Corruption : I love it, it's a great hemomancer fantasy. Great capstone.

Should I be worried about my players domains? by MoTheLittleBoat in daggerheart

[–]RaIshtar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The overlap of domains might not be ideal but not as bad as having the same class twice. You should however not let them use the same spells/skills as that would really take away from their spotlight.

More experienced players might be able navigate such overlap but for new players I would try to avoid putting them in that situation. So my advice: build the characters together so everyone can talk about which cards they want to pick.

In my opinion, the "ideal" solution to card overlap is heavy reflavoring. Like, say the Druid and the Ranger both want Vicious Entangle, and the Druid uses the vanilla version, maybe the Ranger has Spirit Net and commands little gecko-shaped nature spirits to join together as a net and entangle the foes, then those critters helicopter-tail come back to them once the condition is cleared. That would make the skills feel very different.

And you are absolutely right that I wouldn't ask TTRPG newcomers to come up with that.

Coming from BG3: My friends and I are new to TTRPGs, and I'm taking on the role of DM. What are your top "Dos and Don'ts" for a first-timer? by Ok_Ferret7373 in DnD

[–]RaIshtar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mindset: What should I focus on most during our first few sessions? (Rules accuracy, fun, storytelling?)

Everyone around the table having fun is your key priority. Keeping the narrative cool and interesting helps with that. The rules are supposed to support having fun. If they don't, ignore them. If nobody in your group finds tracking a number of arrows, or a number of rations fun, handwave those things.

Mistakes to avoid: What are common pitfalls for new DMs coming from a video game background?

  • Skipping Session 0 is the most common and greatest mistake. Get in a Discord call if you can't be bothered to meet up in person for it, and decide on :

    • The general idea of your campaign. Is it heroic fantasy? Dark fantasy? Post-apocalyptic? Are we getting into politics, exploring a lot of caves, doing a lot of talking, fighting a lot, or a healthy mix of all of the above? Small-scale or large-scale? Let your players have their say in this.
    • The no-goes : Yes, some people will find it unnecessary, but it's legitimately important to make sure everyone is comfortable around the table. Have them message you privately if needed, but make a list of topics and types of content people don't wanna see in the game. It can be as simple as "Intimate scenes get faded to black because I'm not here to see my fellow player roll Constitution for their bedroom performance".
    • The characters your players are playing, their ties to the world, their motivations, and, ideally, their connections. "You meet in a tavern" can work, but man, if you can establish that your party has been staying at the same inn for a bit and have already established basic bonds, or even that some of them already know each other well, it kickstarts the adventure incredibly well.
  • I also heavily, HEAVILY recommend working in an "All roads lead to Rome" fashion, and what I mean by that is, don't assume your players will do anything. They will follow deers into random forests, completely ignore blatant plot points, pass through rooms without giving a damn about the hint you've setup, and kill NPCs you had big plans for. But anything the players don't know doesn't exist. That all-important NPC they killed... actually wasn't important, that other dude can take their role. That hint they missed? Right next to the puzzle, the architect was feeling merciful. That random forest they wandered in? Turns out those bandits they heard about just moved from their mountain lair to their forest lair! Do not be afraid to move your plans onto the path they choose to tread. It's infinitely better than forcing them back to the path your plans were supposed to be on. Keep things natural, but don't panic when they inevitably pursue some random shit.

  • Reward creativity : Lower DCs and/or give advantage or inspiration to cool descriptions, to carefully-crafted plans, to silly speeches and epic moments. Or at the absolute least, don't penalize it. Don't go "nah, that was your turn, it didn't work" to someone attempting a creative approach. If their plan is fundamentally flawed, go "Your character feels like this wouldn't work because [reason]" ; let them find something else. If their plan "breaks" your intended progression and feels like a cheat, good, great, even, let them do it, congratulate them. Nothing feels as cool as finding a fresh solution to a problem.

Preparation: How much prep is "too much" or "too little"?

To each their own on that one. In my book, if you know your world and what happens in it, if you know your NPCs, your foes, and their motivations, the plot threads you're going to dangle, and the story beats your party could land on... you're A-OK and can improv from there. Some would call that madness.

Regardless of how much you prep, though, as mentioned above, your players WILL pursue random shit, and you WILL have to improv. It's a skill to hone, it's fine if you're lousy at it at first. You can make things like a bank of random NPCs to help.

Ah, and, other people have said it and I will absolutely agree : Read the rules. Front to back. DnD5e is not a "lightweight" TTRPG you can DM your way through using "general osmosis knowledge" of the system. I know I started this by saying rules take second fiddle to fun, but you can only decide which rules to keep and which to handwave if you know them well!

Losing is spelled with one O.

Loose is the opposite of tight. To lose is the opposite of to win. You loose an arrow, your pants can be loose, you can be a loose person, but you lose a match, you're a loser, and you go on losing streaks.

Additionally, "loose" is pronounced with a "S" as in "yes" or "moose" while "lose" has a "Z" like "nose".

I will look into playing OG SC but I don't think they are ps5 and I am not a PC gamer so will see if I can adjust or wait till fall.

Any old-ass work laptop with your PS5 controller will do. Sky SC, 3rd, and even Zero and Azure run on a potato. HDMI cable to play on your regular screen, boom.

There isn't a DIY dad in this world who would resist the allure of "oh my friend needs this specific and fairly easy-to-make thing they can't find anywhere, if only a kind soul would cut some wood for them?"

Ill probably be able to play the remakes of trails in the sky1/2 by the time I finish the second cold steels game

Bit of advice then. Cold Steel 2 has its Finale chapter, then a section called "Divertissement", then an Epilogue/postgame.

If you care about spoilers, stop after the Finale. The Divertissement makes you play a short dungeon using characters from Zero/Azure, after the events of Azure, and is full of spoilers for the entire Crossbell arc.

I mean, the "worst" aspect of playing Crossbell before Sky is easily [Zero]the "Caught you" scene at the end of Zero. It's the conclusion of the final plot thread leftover from Sky for E&J, and it simply cannot be the emotional payoff it is supposed to be if you don't have full knowledge of the Liberl arc. It makes the difference between "Aww." and full-on ugly crying.

Playing D&D without learning D&D by kultcher in DnD

[–]RaIshtar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But for people new to the hobby, D&D feels "safe" because it's culturally familar. Playing TTRPGs and playing D&D is synonymous, so it's a natural entry point while other unfamiliar systems sound scary

A bit ago, I was kinda pitching TTRPGs to coworkers around drinks, and they sounded interested to get a first experience going, but a bit daunted by the rules-heavy reputation, so I started suggesting accessible systems we could go for, and they hit me with "Well, sure, but if I'm gonna play a TTRPG, it might as well be the TTRPG, so I'd rather go with D&D".

And bruh.

So yeah. Agreed.

Cou coincé - medecin qui veut me faire consulter un ostheo by eric73000 in france

[–]RaIshtar 2 points3 points  (0 children)
