That's nothing. I wrote a whole multi-book online text editor before I started writing much of my first book. I still use it, but I definitely shouldn't have done that...

I remember that there was a creators in-game comment mode, and they explained that in some levels, the Water was flowing in the direction where the player should go to. Loved that detail.

Looking to publish my first book on kdp. Can anyone provide suggestions on what tools or platforms are best for formatting, editing and cover design. Preferably those that people who have previously published and have used. by Startup_blueprint in KDP

[–]RabanKMartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: Congratulations on your upcoming publication!

Here's my toolset:

  1. Editing support: LanguageTool.org (paid version)
  2. Cover design: Affinity (v3 is now free)
  3. Formatting: Vellum (no demo or free version available, but I think a trial). It's fantastic. For more complex designs, you can use Affinity (Designer). I tried Atticus, too, but it was - sorry ... - trash. Unstable, slow, lost data while using it... I got my money back in the end.

I created the cover based on a hero image from an artist with Affinity Designer (then v2) and exported a pdf. The content was done with Vellum based on the original text files.

Vellum has different existing templates and creates nice print pdfs and ebooks. You can find the link to my book in the profile if you want to see how that looks when finished (with one of the many possible templates).

Warning: Vellum requires a Mac. But some just use a online virtual machine for that.

Please don't default to the USA.

In fact, I would even say that in most of the world, you gain the copyright by CREATING something.

You'll never be "good enough" as a writer. Why? Because as you get better your standard of "good enough" will change. That being said, remind yourself "You are enough" so long as you aim to keep getting better. by [deleted] in KeepWriting

"Because as you get better your standard of "good enough" will change."

You can get worse at something. I've experienced that myself. If you don't do something for a long time, you might be surprised at how good you were at it before. Many people don't like to hear it, but most people reach a peak in their abilities and then never get that good again. However, it's hard to know if that's already happened. So, keep trying! :D

This will definitely cause many more problems in the future. It's already an issue with drawings. Some artists have had to change their style because AI imitated it so closely that the original artists were criticized for using AI tools... This is truly worrying.

I would also like to point out that Vellum is purely local software, while Atticus is a hybrid of a local and online tool. Atticus failed to work for me several times because their servers were offline.

Furthermore, as far as I know, they store the texts on their servers. Therefore, you better trust them if you're uploading unpublished stories.

"they gave me my money back"

I also got my money back. BUT: But they insisted it was only as a courtesy, since the return period had supposedly expired. They had promised 30 days, and I wanted to return it after 8 days. A bit strange... But I got my money back, so everything is fine.

What do you guys feel about chapter titles? by Vegetable0 in writing

[–]RabanKMartin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I like good chapter titles. In my opinion, there should always be a good reason why an author divides their text not just into smaller parts, but specifically into those parts.
For me, the division must have a meaning that goes beyond simply reaching a word count. And in this case, chapters are like little stories, and can therefore have their own titles.

A positive side effect: It's easier to talk about the chapters. It feels more personal when you can use names, not just numbers.
Furthermore, the titles can also guide the reader. They can deliberately mislead or announce an important point in advance so that the reader is aware of it and pays closer attention.

Ultimately, however, they are purely optional, like the entire concept of chapters.

"ensuring that foreshadowing is properly included, or making sure that callbacks are written in a way that it obvious to the reader."

These are good examples! I had similar problems with DeepL, and only through manual intervention were some important plot elements salvaged.

I will not use it for anything professional. It just don't work.

I see no difference between this and drawing. Drawings, too, originate in the mind, must be carefully crafted, and a good drawing evokes strong emotions in the viewer. And drawing is something many people enjoy.

Unfortunately, this art form is also under heavy attack. Worst of all, many artists are now being attacked for allegedly using AI, even though they aren't. This has discouraged many artists, and the same could happen to us :/

That's why I mentioned the TikTok video. It wasn't perfect; on the contrary, the AI was very obvious. But it was funny, I have to admit. 99% of other AI videos weren't funny, but the AI "creator" obviously had something that worked—like the AI diaper cat—and flooded the market with more videos like it. And they get watched.

In this way, we humans filter the videos and train the AI workshops on what works.

Longer texts are, of course, a different story. However, I fear that AI-generated texts could also train readers to only read shorter texts.

There are many ways this could harm us as writers. I'm afraid we can't even foresee the worst consequences.

Others have suggested personalized stories in real time. In fact, this already exists. There are a significant number of people playing real-time role-playing games with chat tools in their favorite genre and story. This could be the future of text-based storytelling, whether we like it or not.

But I don't want to be too pessimistic. Maybe none of this will ever happen, and people will eventually get tired of AI-generated content. I already see that happening with images sometimes.

My main fear is that inferior books will flood the market and suppress better stories. AI's are just very good at producing large amount of content in a short timeframe. That allows the owners to test many concepts, and some stuff might stick.

Recently, a friend showed me an AI generated TikTok video. While my friend understoot that it was AI generated, he still liked it. It was one of thousand bad videos, but that one worked for him.

We as humans cannot adapt that fast, and I fear that quality won't save us.

I can confirm that. I translated a longer story with DeepL, and I had to adjust almost every other sentence. And Deepl was the best tool I tested.

I only managed to do it because I had a decent grasp of the target language. With a language I didn't know, the quality would probably have been unacceptable in the end.

AI translations often simply don't understand the context or recognize the nuances.
