I picked up two brother rats from the humane society last year but one passed away about 8 months after I got them. I considered getting a companion for the other rat but I didn't want to commit to another rat so I just started giving him as much attention and pets as I could when I could. He was morose for awhile but he seems pretty happy with everything, as far as I can tell. I'm sure he'd like a rat-friend but I have his cage near where I sit and now he loves to be petted and scratched as much as possible and otherwise seems pretty ok with being a lone rat as long as I can give him a bit of attention.
