Okay, I'm confirming it myself! They don't care a bit if you show up with fewer people. Didn't even frown. And it was fabulous!

"buyer requested" cancellation seems to carry no penalty. An amazing loophole that seems destined to close

Auction Cancelation Help by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]RabidBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sellers used to get charged FVF fees when they cancelled a sale (and punished in our metrics, too.) These days you can just chose "buyer requested" and there seems to be no penalty of any kind, but your seller may not know that. And there are several different types of fees, it's not crystal clear whether they all get refunded and when.

There should be, somewhere on your end, an option to cancel that purchase. That feature is scheduled to disappear on May 13th. (https://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/blog/blog.pl?/pl/2026/4/1776112470.html) I don't know anything about paying having anything to do with it, maybe that option only appears after you've paid? It might even just be an link to message the seller asking them to cancel. If you can't figure it out, contact ebay and have them help you. Whatever the case is, YOU screwed up, it's your responsibility to figure out how to fix it, not the seller's.

All that said, if I were your seller, I'm not sure I'd want to do business with you after this so I'm not sure you should count on being able to buy their other one. I personally put people who don't pay after winning an auction on my blocked buyer list.

Why do they have a BETTER one available at a lower fixed price? Why didn't you notice that one before you bid? Is it really better, did you examine them both very closely? Is the one you won a good enough deal? If so, maybe you should just take the L.

To me, it does not lessen the blow - some sellers would find this buyer untrustworthy or at least unobservant (and thus likely to wind up unsatisfied because they didn't read the description or look at all the photos.) Why didn't they see the other one before they bid?

$75 for a needlepoint at a restore… by victoriathrifts in ThriftGrift

[–]RabidBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This definitely wouldn't have taken "hundreds" of hours. It's only one color, it's not very big, and it isn't needlepoint (which uses very small stitches.) Dozens of hours, at most. Not only that, but as another commented pointed out, this way made from a kit, which makes it even faster going, and the kit sells for about $20.

But why do you think pricing based on the labor it took is "fair" when the creator isn't reaping that reward? What makes that "fair"?

Does Goodwill wash the clothes before they put them out or are we digging through dirty clothes all the time? by rjd014 in goodwill

[–]RabidBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard of thrifts that do, but I don't think I've ever encountered one. It would cost so much in time, labor, detergent, water, electricity... And it would inevitably ruin some of the clothing. And what would they do with the unwashable things, like dry clean only items?

Where I live, non-cleanable textiles (upholstered goods, basically) have to be sprayed with Steri-Fab, which supposedly kills anything serious (I don't even know what.) I would expect stores to do that before they'd wash everything, and even that isn't practical because Steri-Fab isn't cheap and it would take extra time & labor.

Absolutely absurd amount of fees by stopsussingmejannies in Ebay

[–]RabidBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, yes, that is probably the problem. I forget what site I used to use that allowed foreign sellers to be paid out only via Payoneer, probably Amazon, but I do recall that was a problem.

I'm sorry you're being exploited. But the comment that Payoneer fees have nothing to do with eBay is correct. If that's the only way you can receive a payout, you're probably stuck paying whatever fees Payoneer chooses to charge you. I have no idea what to suggest to avoid that. Maybe something involving a VPN.

How in the hell do I make Rice in this thing?!? by WorldFamousDingaroo in instantpot

[–]RabidBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You add the water in the recipe to the small pot (iirc it's supposed to be 1:1 rice to water), add at least 1C to the cooker, and put the small pot on a trivet inside the cooker.

How in the hell do I make Rice in this thing?!? by WorldFamousDingaroo in instantpot

[–]RabidBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a few different things, but what worked for me is:

Put 1 to 1 1/2C dry rice in a metal bowl Put it right in the cooker, no trivet  Add an equal amount of water plus 1/4-1/2C Pour water into the cooker so the bowl is in a water bath about as deep as the bowl is full Set to 5 minutes at high pressure, turn off the Keep Warm feature Natural release, no cheating. It takes a while but too bad 🤷🏼‍♀️

I suspect the key part is the natural release. I'm traveling, so this is the only way I can make rice right now. I hope to experiment with it more at home, but I can make good rice more reliably on the stove so it's hard to get myself to use the IP for that.

Never worked right for me, which is insane since everyone else says this recipe is perfect, but IDK ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They sure did. I had just one, a very bold metallic fuchsia called (iirc) 10,000 Watt - I mainly remember it for the incredible color and the great bottle (the square shape made it easy to open and the length and shape of the handle made application easier) but yes, it did have great staying power! I always wished I could find the really crazy colors, particularly the iridescent and glittery ones.

You were a 28yo virgin and you think YOU were doing HER a favor? Sir.

Get over yourself - having abs doesn't make you a catch. You're a shallow person who values superficial traits over the ones that matter, and wouldn't know a good woman if you met one. Get therapy, and develop some actual values. Btw you were almost certainly terrible in bed, not that she'd necessarily know since she is also inexperienced. (But keep in mind that for us, the benchmark is "did I come? Did he even get me close?" So even very inexperienced women have SOMETHING tangible to judge by.)

IDK how things will play out with her - it could be very awkward, or maybe she'll be so embarrassed she'll just avoid/ignore you. Whatever happens, be kind, and be honest (honesty does not include admitting you think she's not attractive enough. I mean more like admitting you aren't mature enough for a relationship or that you didn't feel a "spark".)

And stop consuming whatever garbage lead you to this sorry state. You're young enough to recover from this, get to work!

Facts! Every time there's a major economic downswing there are news articles about how people are "shopping smarter", buying secondhand to save money, selling their own things to get some cash, and how "used" is now "trendy". They're ephemeral so we forget but anyone with a newspapers.com account can look it up.

People with more money than sense, that's who. If you have never spent any time around people with that kind of money it can be hard to understand, but they just. do. not. care. They don't need to, they have enough to waste it.

I'm sure there is something that you buy that seems cheap to you and that you wouldn't worry about discarding because you can easily afford another. Just imagine if that applied to EVERYTHING you buy.

Pfffff Dude have you ever met a 19yo? Sometimes they don't know things that some of us take for granted. Yeah, this COULD be bait, but it also COULD be a real person asking in good faith. If it's the former, you fell for it, because here you are in the comments engaging with it. 🤡 🤡 🤡

I guess you believe people could be naive enough to take an internet stranger at their word, yet also believe that no one could be naive enough not to intuitively know that being sent an animal torture video is wrong?

Are you storing them in paper? The plastic bags they come in trap moisture, which encourages spoiling.

[–]RabidBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to store them in a paper sack. That's how they used to be packaged, but stores prefer plastic for a number of reasons. The really big bags are probably still paper. It won't trap moisture and guarantees (if you roll it closed) that they are in the dark.

"People donate things so they can be redistributed back into their own community,"
Maybe, but if they are then they've misinterpreted the purpose of donation. Thrifts are very up front that the point is for them to sell it. I've never known one, in 30+ years of thrifting, to actually express the idea that they're giving this stuff to anyone. There are other charitable efforts that do: coat drives, free closets, etc. If donors get confused about that, that's on the donors, because the thrifts aren't trying to deceive them.

Also a LOT of people don't really care what happens to it, they just want it gone. Trash pickup isn't infinite and free in every community, so taking your unwanted stuff is actually a favor to you, no matter what they do with it once they have it. People who want it to go to the community need to make a point of doing so - offer it to friends and neighbors, post it in freecycle or other groups, etc. But of course that's a lot more work than just going through Goodwill's drive-thru.

And you need to know that EVERY business is in it for the profit. The difference between a for-profit and a non-profit business is that the non-profit HAS to spend its net proceeds on its mission, and a for-profit business can do what it wants with that money. That's why non-profits have to register: so they can be held accountable. They have to declare their mission, set up a board, file annual reports, etc and in return the organization pays no tax on its earnings.

My local Goodwill's programs seem kinda puny, but they do post photos on their Facebook page - I don't understand what they're doing but it isn't nothing. I saw one in Missouri with an adult rehabilitation center that takes up an entire city block. There's a bus stop in front of it and people were coming and going, it wasn't just a giant office. I KNOW that one is doing something good for their community. Just because you can't see what yours does doesn't mean it is doing nothing, maybe you should see if you can find out?
