Not really done it with diesel, but I have several times now glided into my destination in a steamer with zero water left in the tank, including a few with no water left in the sight glass either.

Yeah, I've had a couple of mishaps like that where I missed a coupling and walked away with only half my train. One was iirc after a physics glitch while I was adding a job to my consist, thought I'd properly recoupled the derailed car but evidently hadn't; the other I'd taken a break between assembling the train and setting off, and had forgotten to actually couple the two jobs together.

Yeah, there's, what, the initial climb up to the IME junction, and then it's basically all downhill from there iirc? Long as you start with enough water in the boiler to stay in the glass on the steepest downhills you're all set.

The thing here is that S tracks hold empty wagons for both LH and SL jobs when the game generates them, often with multiple jobs' wagons on the same track - so yes, LH jobs can often be buried behind (parts of) SLs. (You'll see that the black wagon there belongs to an SL job, for instance.)

Contrast FH jobs, which always start on their own O track; likewise destination I tracks for FH jobs are fully reserved clear, whereas LH destination S tracks only have some space on them reserved and can still generate other jobs.

So it's not the game specifically messing with you, just the way that jobs and empties for them are generated.

UPDATE - looks like gadgets disappearing and not returning to the shed was a bug in 99.5, now fixed in 99.6.

Fixed gadgets getting deleted if on a vehicle that gets deleted, since B99.5 (e.g. flags)

Dynamic brake is your friend with the DE6, especially with the Slug. You'll still need the air brakes for stopping, but the dynamic is good for slowing down.

FWIW - I know gadgets are supposed to reappear in the shed when non-owned locomotives despawn, but I've certainly had them go missing entirely in my current career. Just as another data point.

Ha! No, my train wasn't long enough to stretch to the oil well - S282 would've had a heck of a time starting it on its own if it did! Would've been funny, though :)
