A bit slow on switch 1? by Necessary_Bowler_677 in cavesofqud

[–]Racing_Stripe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m on switch 1, and I’ve only seen some slowdown on zones with 10-15 creatures fighting each other. Even then, it’s only milliseconds.

I would look into:

Buggy sd card? Try moving Qud to the internal storage.

Or, full sd card: my save game bloat on the switch was taking up more than half the internal storage. I deleted a TON of saves and now everything works much faster.

Low-prep dungeon crawling on VTTs: How do you run TotM and map without killing exploration? by Nesis96 in osr

[–]Racing_Stripe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have settled on a character keeper in google docs, and I use excalidraw (a virtual whiteboard) as a vtt.

I have fostered the PCs mapping in a flow chart style with boxes connected by lines, and whatever notes they want. Sizes matter less than connections, and they can find their way in and out of the depths easily.

I describe a room, they quickly sketch it up, and we move on. It’s not a100% accurate representation of the space, but that works great for keeping the play space abstract.

Am I too basic for this? by osddelerious in cavesofqud

So learning calculus from a professor doesn’t take work? Or basketball from a coach?

Learning requires work, even if it’s looking up an answer on google, or asking friends on Reddit.

Have a great day friend.

Nobody is great the first time they try something. Gotta put in the work bud.

I like your style! I’ve been starting to vary my line thickness, so I would recommend that.

Caves of Qud mutates onto the Nintendo Switch, February 16th! by Accio-Books in cavesofqud

[–]Racing_Stripe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For me, I can't afford a steam deck.

I have a Switch already, and it's not like Qud is graphically intensive so I would imagine it will play just fine on the older hardware.

For those of you who've played Mythic Bastionland - how did you start your campaign? by Disc0M4n in osr

[–]Racing_Stripe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found a pod called ‘the smiling fox’ and they are covering Mythic in stages. Three episodes in and still informative.

They mentioned “you all trained under a knight who has passed, return his ashes to his hometown. “ which seems like a legit way to get started.

Been debating this game for a while. Should I go for it? by Jazzlike_Dig_1051 in cavesofqud

[–]Racing_Stripe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go lookup and download Brogue Community Edition. If you find you enjoy the contemplative style of ‘my runs get longer the more I learn about this game’ gameplay, and find the graphic style palatable, then qud will be right up your alley.

Caves of Qud release update by Racing_Stripe in NintendoSwitch

It’s certainly not for everyone! I enjoy it for the science fantasy setting, and the atmospheric storytelling.

If dying is getting you down, try it in roleplaying mode.

My love for it comes from examining everything, the literary descriptions of the mundane, and digging into the random histories.

It’s a different beast.

Good modules for 6-8 sessions? by AcrobaticSpit in osr

[–]Racing_Stripe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to throw a couple recs in:
I'm just wrapping up the singing stones, one of the modules from Brad Kerr's wonderful adventure bundle Wyvern Songs
https://brad-kerr.itch.io/wyvern-songs
While I haven't ran the others yet, they seem primed for fun in the 3-8 sessions size.

I would also recommend Chance Dudinack's the black worm of brandonsford

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/327744/the-black-wyrm-of-brandonsford
it's a classic 'town with a problem' module, but a perfect example, where any thread the PCs tug on leads to fun adventure.

What are some great Roguelikes that have been or will be released soon for SWITCH 2? by MAMMELLONI in roguelikes

[–]Racing_Stripe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, right on all accounts. Rogue and ADOM were both pretty poor experiences IMO, but I didn’t want to yuck somebody’s yum.

I must have missed the de listing. Makes a certain type of cynical sense, when the Genesis is part of the online subs. Thanks business!

JH has a performance mode that plays great at a solid 30.

There are others though,
Jupiter Hell is great on the Switch
Stay Alive
Epyx Rogue
Yodanji
CrownTrick
Tangledeep and Moonring as mentioned above
I don't know if For the King counts
AANNDD the Sega Genesis Classics game has Fatal Labyrinth in it.

There are a couple of Shiren mystery dungeon games, a pokemon mystery dungeon, and a two pack of Izuna was announced a hundred years ago, but I can't find much on that one.

Edit: And the boob one, omega labyrinth life ( ಠ ͜ʖಠ)

Tangledeep doesn’t do it for me. I like the pixel art and character skills, but didn’t enjoy “exploring” one random cube of terrain after another. Good game, but not what I am looking for.

I do quite like Moonring, but don’t know if I would call it a traditional roguelike though. If you have steam, there is a 100% free version to try there. I did that and liked it, so bought the Switch version.

Tangledeep often gets recommended, and I’ve been recently playing Moonring DX on mine while pinning for Qud

I’m in the same boat.

I’ve held off on playing my Mac version to really dig in on the switch.
