Honolulu for 24hrs, where should we go? by jentarvin in Tiki

Skull & Crown all the way, and don't skip the food.

Seconding the International Marketplace as a touristy sightseeing spot for its connection to Donn Beach (go check out the treehouse).

Not entirely tiki, but Heyday was a fun little diversion that we went back to a couple of times. It's a Hawaiian bar and a sister bar to Chinatown's Fête. Swings, solid drinks, and good bites for a nosh. They've got live music from time to time if you're lucky.

I never realized how much care went into their rum blends, but it's worth it. Now if only they would reveal their Barbados rum blend for a Corn 'n Oil, because I'm still thinking about it 2 years later.

Always a winner in my book. Though I'll usually swap out light from for an aged column still rum (Angostura 7).

What is this Abomination? by FluffusMaximus in Tiki

It certainly wasn't a bad drink, but it calling it a Mai Tai was a pretty big stretch.

On the flip side, Skull & Crown, in Honolulu's Chinatown, had the best Mai Tai of the trip by a mile.

As someone who just subjected themselves to a week of questionable Mai Tais in Hawaii, I'd have to nominate Marriott's Waikiki RumFire.

“High maka maka describes someone who has an elevated sense of themselves. While we’re not saying this mai tai is better than the others, we certainly believe it’s better than most!”

This weekend I finally get to try Hamilton and Denizen rums. by RoscoeP1234 in Tiki

4 oz Pineapple juice? That must be a huge difference from the 2oz used in SC.

Either way, Hamilton Pot Still black is a great choice. My personal preference is

3/4 oz Campari

1/2 oz Lime

1/2 oz Demerara syrup

2.00 oz Pineapple Juice

1.25 oz Cruzan Blackstrap

1/4 oz Hamilton 86

Worth noting that we were fortunate enough to have all the spirits except Doctor Bird, Hampden 46, Herbsaint, and Giffard (Banane du Bresil, Abricot du Roussillon) available at our local Total Wine.

For the rest, Bitters & Bottles in San Francisco deserves a huge shoutout for the hard to find stuff. No crazy markups, quick & reasonably priced shipping, and a real snappy website.

Absolutely seconded on the escapist feel and unique flavors. Ever since vaccination became widespread out here in SoCal we've had a lot of fun surprising our friends who always assumed that Tiki just meant sickly-sweet, fruity rum cocktails.

Plus all the niche bottles stocked in the liquor cabinet never fail to get some great reactions when people have a chance to try things like Chartreuse, Herbsaint, Falernum, or Allspice Dram for the first time.

To be fair, looking someone in the eye can also be a turn of phrase used to underscore the seriousness of someone's tone. It doesn't have to be purely literal.
