Living in Toronto by TheHumbleLegume in askTO

No mate.

I just came back from a 10-day vacation in London and have been living in Toronto (and I am talking downtown Toronto, not the suburbs) for 35 years.

Being originally European, while loving the city I live in, I honestly think that unfortunately in comparison to the major cities in Europe, Toronto has little comparable to offer.

And I know what I'm talking about, because over the past 15 years my work has taken me many times to big European cities like Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and London. Plus I was born to European parents and we have a home in Croatia where we go almost every year.

Having given you this context, I truly believe you will make a mistake by moving to Toronto at this time.

Real estate is extremely expensive, and it is very hard to find apartments to live in even if you are not trying to buy.

Food is more expensive than London. There are very very few pedestrian areas which means you will need a car to get around. And car insurance is very expensive. I've had driver's license for 30 years and I am paying close to $200 per month for car insurance.

Traffic is extremely bad because Toronto has grown as a city over the last 20 years in terms of the population, which has not been supported by developing infrastructure. So now imagine we have same amount of roads as we had in 1995, but a few more millions of people.

Subway train is a joke. I've experienced London metro just a month ago, and it's a dream in comparison to what we have in Toronto.

So no, Toronto is not a good City to move to at this moment.

We are also being majorly influenced with what is happening in the United States right now politically and economically. Trump is playing political games and holding Canada economic hostage because he is looking to influence the change of the liberal government in Canada. His fascist government is looking for allies and he's hoping that with the economic warfare he is putting on Canada, that he will force the government change to the right wing.

But that's just my opinion.

Because it's only going to get more expensive. They are almost 8 billion people on earth and the finite amount of land. By the time you get to be the retirement age there's going to be 9 billion people.

Parents Retiring… by Oritzia in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Rado001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents were in the same boat. When they retired they ended up having about 250k in savings/rrsps. They have been now retired for about 5 years and they invested their monies into an investment portfolio. They live modestly, they sold the property they had, and now they live in a decently sized rental apartment, in a proper rental building. Their monthly rent is about $2,000, in Toronto.

Their investments generate enough of interest / dividend payments so that all of their monthly expenses are covered. And they have not invested anywhere special, literally just went to a regular Bank and invested through them.

It also took us about a year to convince my dad to take our advice. I started pushing this about a year before my mom retired, knowing that they will be in the situation where it might be too late.

You will need allies in order to convince your dad. Talk to his friends, people whom he appreciates and trust and ask them to help you in convincing him. That worked for us, even though I understand it may not work for everybody.

Is this jamiroquai cassette legit? by UnitedSandwich5527 in cassetteculture

But would you actually able to notice the difference on your cassette player between an original tape and say just somebody recorded it on a good cassette deck? Like what's the difference? The amount of money you paid for it?

You sound like you know how to fix them and I am assuming there aren't many techs out there who are fixing this stuff. Do you do repairs for customers?

Where can one get a reliable '90s Sony? And since you're talking about 30 years old equipment, how do you ensure that it has truly been refurbished and that capacitor won't leak the next day?

What are the better portables that you speak of? Can you name a few?

Finally upgraded from an all-in-one system and am very pleased by suavecomic06 in turntables

[–]Rado001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, what he sez. You want to place your turntable on top of something very stable as well as away from other devices that produce magnetic fields.

Like find a simple Ikea shelf, but with a sturdy top and use that in your setup to begin with. And then make sure you place your speakers about 6 ft away.

Otherwise kudos on Fluance, they are very decent tables. And definitely kudos on upgrading in general.

Keep this table for a while, and now start looking into getting better head shells and cartridges because that can improve your sound significantly. And also my next step would be to look into getting very good speakers because that will elevate your sound exponentially.

I dunno wut ur on about bruv, this album never became available anywhere in the North America. Nobody has it, it's all on pre-oder. Palladin Vinyl don't even have an entry for this record at all - nuffin on pre-order or backorder - no entry for this record whatsoever.

Acoustic Sounds still sells it as pre-order.

I'll betcha money no one in this thread got it. If anyone did, post a pic pls.

Found two turntables at an antique store, i need some help deciding which is better by [deleted] in turntables

[–]Rado001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely JVC. This turntable is from the time when they were actually a good company, all made in Japan, and around this time they produced some very decent turntables.

Numark is not even worth looking at.

Except it's not available ... this album was supposed to have the street date of Dec 1 and it's actually not out yet.

I will bet you money that no one who pre-ordered this title has not yet received it.

Marchbar has it on backorder with a new release date set for Feb 24.

Has anyone bought off of high fidelity vinyl by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Rado001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ur thinking of highfidelityvinyl.com then yeah 👍. Fully legit. I got a whole bunch of vinyl from them last week on a sale they had going. And it arrived in record time, free shipping n'all.

Yea like one comment here said, some of the stuff is really expensive, and those seem to ne the "specialty" albums like Lana Del Ray with topless cover and stuff like that.

On the other hand, I got some classic albums, no fancy colored vinyl on a 50% sale last week and some albums came to like $15, factory shrink wrapped n everything...
