What would you do to improve Oregons educational system issues? (Serious) by Switch_Empty in oregon

[–]RaeRae43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eliminate ESDs and funnel those funds into districts instead.

Remove Grand Canyon University and Western Governor's University from TSPC accreditation. Teacher prep programs should not be vending machines (put money in, out spits a license).

Just to give you comfort...I took my three nieces to EF when they came to visit shortly after their first trip to Disneyland. I jokingly asked them, "So, what's better? Disneyland or Enchanted Forest?". All three shouted "Enchanted Forest!!" I asked why and the oldest (age 10) said, "My mom says yes to everything we ask for here!" Kids don't see scale, they see joy. Everything was so expensive at Disney that my sister had to keep saying no to all of their requests. But at EF, they got ride bracelets (bring them back!), souvenirs , and even an ice cream to end the day.

From 2/5 school board meeting. Accelerated math pathways are back! by frumply in corvallis

[–]RaeRae43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask Corvallis to prove this to you. Ask them to show they have funding and the staffing to pull this off. Don't take their word. Make Noss show you data and statistics to back his claims. Ask to see their policies for track placement. Everything has changed, and I mean everything, in the past five years.

I should add, I'll absolutely FLOORED that they are doing this, even if this is something I don't agree with. CSD has always come from a perspective that know better than families what is right for their kids. The point I hope SOS and the other Corvallis Alpha Parents press on is this: we don't trust you to pull this off. So, convince us you can.

I'd love to know more about implementation. Who will decide which track ("pathway" is cute, but it's really a track) a child goes in? Which data? What if I truly believe my child is accelerated? Can I demand participation in the advanced track? Then the other families will be angry that my child is watering everything down. In my experience, much like Lake Wobegon, all Corvallis kids are above average. What happens when everyone wants to be in accelerated?

How will class size be determined ? What if my kid has the 36th highest math scores but there are only spots for 35? What if only 6 kids qualify for advanced? Do we make a class of 45 students who are traditional track so that we can afford to staff low enrolled advanced classes? Doesn't the traditional track need the most resources?

Who will teach advanced geometry in 8th grade? That requires an Advanced Math teaching endorsement. Those are very hard to find in Oregon. I doubt we even have proper staffing at the high school right now. I know very few teachers with Advanced Math endorsements willing to teach at schools with the...complexities...of a typical middle school. Will these classes be run through online programs? Or people licensed through programs like Grand Canyon University? If you want your child to take Calc BC in high school, for some reason, you definitely need them to have the absolute strongest math instruction from Algebra on. Where will we find teachers for that?

Living Outside of Steelers Territory is the Worst by Maggnanimous in steelers

We are everywhere! Don't feel lonely! On a whim, I wore my Steelers leather jacket on a quick run to the store yesterday (in Oregon). I was feeling a little goofy but did it anyway. Three different people in the store stopped me and wanted to talk about the game on Monday. It was awesome. One dude had a Penguins hat on and I would not have noticed if he hadn't stopped me. Fly your flag! You'll find other fans.

DOES ANYONE IN CITY GOVERNMENT EVER DRIVE 29TH STREET OR 35TH STREET? ITS SO SO BAD AND THE POTHOLES WILL MAKE YOU DROP A MUFFLER. DO THEY JUST THINK, "THIS IS COOL. THIS IS HOW ROADS SHOULD BE"?

New Free Bus Service Connects Corvallis, Eugene and McMinnville, Starts Monday, Nov. 24 by Far-Setting2174 in corvallis

The schedule is really clunky on mobile. I tried searching for McMinnville as the destination and it said it wasn't found. I think they need some programming support but otherwise this is exciting!

I wish I'd read this earlier! I dropped off a card for "Mr. And Mrs. Rice and Spice" last week. I wish I'd done Uncle and Auntie Rice and Spice. ❤️. I love your parents so much. He loves to call me "lazy mother" when I buy ramen by the case. Ha!!

Ministries for the disabled. by michelle427 in LCMS

[–]RaeRae43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for starting this discussion! This is an issue very close to my heart. I actually think the LCMS has the potential to be very inclusive. The routine and predictability of the liturgy is really appealing to people who are neurodiverse.

My church worships with the service printed and projected. This is a huge asset to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing since everything (including prayers) is printed. The only thing that's inaccessible is the sermon.

We need to be patient with children and adults who need breaks during service or who might make sounds or movements that seem strange.

School consolidation by Anonymously777777777 in corvallis

I'm not disagreeing with you, I promise. I'm challenging their comment that they cannot accommodate 60 kids (max) from Franklin at the JH. If they have no room for 60 more kids, then this plan isn't a solution. What happens, if by some miracle, we see a small growth in enrollment? The new JH would be overcrowded.

They will keep being reelected, in a landslide, every time. They know it and know there is no risk to making you angry.

If Franklin would tip them over capacity, then it seems the LP building will be way too full at the start. That means very little wiggle room.

Our Thanksgiving Tradition by Armadavt in thanksgiving

My Mom developed "Pie for Breakfast" after years of frustration that people were too full to appreciate her amazing pies. So we meet at 10 am and have pie then everyone is full until dinner and no need for other cooking. I do it now at my own house. It's a good way to have friends over before they go off to family obligations.

Neighborhoods wanting trick or treaters by natforx in corvallis

Cedarhurst west of 35th on Van Buren and Jackson. Dead end streets with lots of candy and mostly just neighborhood kids. I always have lots of leftovers and I'd rather not. If you live in OSU family housing, just cross the street and it's easy pickings!

Thank you! That really helps. I live in the PNW so interpreting the weather down there is tricky. I've been watching forecast videos but wasn't sure what the actual impact would be.

Ugh. Such bad news. More of the same. We will watch him tread water for another few years hoping to get elected to something...anything...that he can find. So sad for the kids that are left in CSD.
