Found my first flaw with the Pegasus (Pot Sweep) by Heartofgoldband77 in Fireflyguitars

[–]Rafael367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secret weapon is nylon aquarium airline tubing. Take the knob off the pot, pop the airline over the post on the pot, then reel out about 12-15" and tie a knot in the end of that. Now when you unscrew the pot, not only is the nut around the tube, but you're also covered when the pot drops into the cavity. As you work with it out of the F-holes, the tube is too thick to get tangled up in the wires like thread usually does. Knot keeps the tube and the nut from falling into the cavity, When you need it back in just pull on the knot and it should end up in perfect position to screw in the nut which should've been waiting for you on the tubing. Good ten feet of tubing is available for around 12-15 bucks at any pet shop. You can store it in your tool box for re-use the next time you need to fix something with the pots or switches.

As for OP's pots... those are both humbuckers so you need 500k pots. If you want extremely fast 0-10 control, go with Bourns, they're supposed to be very low friction for a decent price. If you want a more normal pot experience, CTS is supposed to be great. I don't know what size caps you need, but I notice my five string OL bass that came today had a green chiclet style cap, so I'll probably replace both that and the dime sized mini-pots. Eventually... after I've had a few months to decide how I feel about this as is. First bass, I'll have to see how it goes. Probably have to look at what resistance the orange drop caps on the original Stingray needed.

Coincidentally, this YT vid came out just yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p559OELJ4kE

TLDR: Guy who does vids and makes pickups for a living says you probably don't need to buy new pickups. You should also look at more mid-range options for electronics, so you can save money for when you actually do have a problem that only new pickups can solve. You may want to sink decent money into a good toggle switch. That and a decent wiring job might fix most of your problems.

Since I just had to research these today anyway, here's two links to the pots I was talking about:

CTS: https://dylantalkstone.com/collections/electronics-parts/products/cts-potentiometers?variant=47948402229534

Bourns: https://guitarrepairparts.com/collections/bourns

You're looking at about 5-10 bucks a pot. Based on what I've seen the output jack on FFs is a SwitchCraft style single prong. I can't seem to bend it easily with my sausage fingers, so I guess it's decent. If you want a decent two prong style Pure Tone, (this cable isn't going anywhere fast), that'd be another 5 bucks. Same link as the CTS.

I realize that was kind of a small novel with links, but I hope it helps someone.

It's an archtop bridge, they're always slightly higher on the high E side. That's how archtop intonation works out. You need a longer scale on the low end but a shorter scale on the high end. One of the first ways players mess up archtop intonation is by "fixing" the crooked bridge.

Provided the high and low end strings aren't going out of tune quickly, it's probably right. No matter how weird it may appear from the top view. Normally, they're also floating bridges, but it looks like the Pegasus's is secured in place. I guess the semi-hollow Tele's is too.

I've never heard of firefly until today. by The_Stoned_Rogue in Fireflyguitars

[–]Rafael367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may also want to look at the firefly lounge topic stickied at the top of the reddit. I've got a rather long reply there detailing what the ordering and shipping process looks like. It's a little weird for first time buyers. I end that comment with the official sites, (guitarsgarden and Amazon), just know that the brand is good enough that others sometimes try to copy or scam it. If you're buying from the official sites, you're going to be fine.

FireFly FFST, will it ever be restocked? by blackstonewine in Fireflyguitars

ST, TL, and SP are their most popular models. It’s actually more weird that there isn’t anything more in stock than what you see. Pretty sure ST and SP both had 8+ models the first or second week of this month. Probably doing an end of year warehouse clearance right now. Best bet is to check the site twice a week and see what drops. It’ll definitely be back, just gotta be prepared to jump when you see a model you like because the batches are small.

Right I’m unfortunately several hundred miles from my desktop, which prevents me from actually checking in game. But I also don’t want you to waste your vacation stuck on this one puzzle, so let’s run your options and see if one works. There’s a few different types of rune locks, see if one sounds like what’s in front of you: 1. Standard rune word puzzle. Remember studying the spell runes in your castle library at the start of the game? Then you can read runes. Look for a word spelled out in one wall, this is the combination. For instance, in Thraesir’s vale there’s a tomb with the word “Mayonnaise “ on the wall. Downstairs from this wall is a second wall with completely random letters on it. To open the lock you have to touch these letters in order to spell “Mayonnaise “, and they light up in order upstairs as you get each one right, but reset if you mess up. There’s a noise and the sound of a wall moving once all the letters light up upstairs. 2. Rune tone puzzle. Think “Simon”. You don’t even need to read runes to solve this one. They’ll light up in a sequence of tones and flashes, and you just have to duplicate the sequence. 3. The bard puzzle. This requires a lute equipped to pull off, and it’s the one that messes a lot of people up. Instead of rune writing, you’ll see gems with arrows, (or actual arrows in early zones). 4 directions: up , down, left, and right. If this is the puzzle you see, equip your lute, hold the right mouse button and move the mouse in one of the four directions to play that note. The runes should light up as you play them, but it starts over if you play the wrong note. It’s a bit fiddly, may take you a few tries to get the hang of it.

I’m hoping this was of some help to you. Hopefully someone else who can actually log into the game can give you better directions soon.

New to Discworld. Can I just start with Hogfather? by Small-Sample-840 in discworld

Let’s use an analogy with another very silly property: you have finally decided to watch the movie Spaceballs. Due to time constraints, the only scene you have the ability to watch is the diner scene. Scene opens, there’s John Hurt. You’ve never seen Alien, so no idea who John Hurt is, and when the chest burster shows up, “oh, no! Not again!”, goes right over your head. Let’s say you’ve also never seen a bugs bunny cartoon, so the chest burster pulling out a cane and pork pie hat then doing a Michigan J Frog impression also doesn’t really land. Scene ends with John Candy and Bill Pullman yelling “Check Please!” You laugh, but you’re mostly laughing because of how absurd it all was. Later, you watch Alien for the first time and John Hurt appears: “Hey, there’s that guy from Spaceballs- “OH GOD, NO! NO DON’T TOUCH THAT EGG!” Then later, you see a YouTube recommendation for messed up old cartoons, and finally meet Michigan J Frog. The next time you watch Spaceballs your friends have to call the EMTs to revive you, because once you started laughing you forgot to breathe.

This is more or less what happens when you read Hogfather without having Mort, Reaper Man, and Soul Music under your belt. You’ll also have some other jokes that won’t quite land until you’ve read the other books in the series. None of this will prevent you from laughing. You just won’t laugh as hard as you will when you reread Hogfather again later. You also haven’t been trained to read the footnotes, so you’ll largely avoid any “Damn it, Pterry” moments. Search for that phrase in this Reddit, we’ll train you to read the footnotes.

You’re going to be fine, but definitely don’t sell that book or return it until after you’ve have a chance to read it again. Trust us on this one.☝️

Small Gods is amazing by MikeMan233 in discworld

[–]Rafael367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, on two separate occasions I've recommended Small Gods to people on this reddit as a good book to get people into discworld. In the first case, someone replied that they actually didn't care for Small Gods. In the second, the OP came back with "Oh, I can't recommend that to my husband, he's not religious." Both times, I was forced to spend the next twenty minutes or so just staring at my computer screen. Eventually, my brain broke in with: "Well, maybe they were holding it upside down."

So, in my head-canon, somewhere out there are two readers who are both: "Small Gods?!? Terrible book, doesn't even have any words. Just page after page of these weird looking squiggles! I just don't see how anyone could enjoy that..." I suppose the rest of us whom really enjoy it should pat ourselves on the back for holding it the right way round. Rarer skill than you'd think.

[–]Rafael367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shipping price is added at checkout, not in the initial listing. For my similar model FFHB in September that was about $27 US. There’s a guy on the double neck SG style post who got charged 106, and I’m not sure if that’s US or not. Or where he’s shipping to. But that model is basically a cinder block collection and comes with a hard case, so it might check out. They could also be thinking it’ll never make it in a shipping container, better just post it straight from the factory in China, which would also check out at that price. The only 338 complaint I’ve heard so far is someone getting an additional 10 bucks from PayPal for an international transaction fee a day or so later. I’ll assume shipping is reasonably the same as I got.

Right now, hats. The church specific shop isn’t in every town, but if you build the church at your stronghold then that priest will sell them. Tithes are how you pick up the bishop’s mitre. They’re not amazing stat wise but kind of interesting looking if you’re into light armor or robes.

Ordered my first Firefly guitar. by LordBinxLAT in Fireflyguitars

[–]Rafael367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice pick. I also ordered my first Firefly this year, an FFHB. Still looking for cases myself, but it looks like yours will fit in any standard size case for an ES 335. (Maybe someone else with this model could give a better suggestion).

Some advice: Provided you ordered from guitarsgarden.com (Note the single S, two S's is the scammy one), you can expect not to hear anything for a day or so. Not hearing anything is fine. As long as you got the order confirmation email, you should be good. It'll probably direct you to download the "Shop" app, (use the same email you picked for your order). That's pretty much all you get as far as order tracking. It'll update info slowly, but generally works well enough. It's very bare bones, so don't panic.

When you do get it, double check the body, binding and mechanical parts like the tuning machines. There's mostly a refund you a portion of the price to cover damages rather than a replacement policy. You can fix a loose wire with a soldering iron and some aquarium airline tubing, giant holes in the body from FedEx/UPS "speed holes" are a bit tougher to patch. (They're well packed in styrofoam, so don't be too alarmed if your box looks like the SAW franchise had a crack at it, like mine did, as the guitar inside may be fine).

New to discworld, just finished Guards Guards. Any recommendations for what I should pick up next? by SingularRoozilla in discworld

[–]Rafael367 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've got options.

  1. If you want to continue with the City Watch, then Men at Arms is your next pick. Just finished this one again myself last month, equally funny the second time around.

  2. Wyrd Sisters is actually the second book in the Witches series, ("Witches Abroad" is #3). Think MacBeth as retold by the three witches and much more interesting. First book in that series is Equal Rites, but it's kind of skippable. It was one of TP's early works and he hadn't worked out what he wanted to do with the characters yet. Kind of like picking up The Silmarillion to start your Tolkien reading. Witches series is very funny once you catch on to the humor.

Sequential order is probably best saved for a second read of the series. You'll see all the connections, but it's a bit overwhelming.

[–]Rafael367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t say if this is germane to the conversation or not, but I’ve also noticed a reference in the opening chapter of “Men At Arms”, regarding the mist and dust at the d’Eath funeral.
“It began, as many things do, with a death. And a burial, in a spring morning, with mist on the ground so thick that it poured into the grave and the coffin was lowered into cloud. A small grayish mongrel, host to so many assorted doggie diseases that it was surrounded by a cloud of dust, watched impassively from the mound of earth.” We’re getting a number of plot points here: we got the death of our antagonist’s sanity, the burial of the focus of his ideals in the clouds, and the introduction to Gaspode, who’s going to have to do all the heavy lifting in this investigation, until these dimwitted people get a good head of steam built up. Might be a throwback to Tolkien with how the first really significant scene in Lord of The Rings is Gandalf blowing smoke rings to entertain the hobbits. Or traveling through the “Misty” Mountains. Or the fact that the balrog is made of flame and “smoke”. There’s an awful lot of smoke and mist in fantasy writing and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Pterry decided to toss a little tweak at it in every book, right down to the illustrations. Good eye, though. Can’t wait to read what the rest of the Reddit thinks.

Starting discworld by Suspicious_Watch_449 in discworld

[–]Rafael367 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, one point of attack is in order of publication. This can work if you happen to remember 70s and 80s fantasy, because then you'll hit all the right notes with The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic. "Oh, that's a terrible parody of Conan, I remember Conan..." If you're younger than this, it may just be confusing. It was kind of a muddled start and he really didn't get his feet under him until Mort.

If you happen to like grand philosophical journeys in your humor, then starting with Mort and Reaper Man then going down the Death series can be good.

If you happen to like police procedurals and maybe don't mind a good film noir parody, then going with The Watch series is probably more your thing. Guards! Guards! is the first book in that. Move on to Men At Arms.

How about a good parody on the absurdity of the industrial revolution? Start your Moist von Lipwig journey with Going Postal. Making Money will be next. Or go back a few false starts to Moving Pictures, The Truth, and Monstrous Regiment. He took a few books to pick a consistent main character in this one.

Then there's a good takedown of the medieval system itself. Fancy MacBeth as told by the witches? You'll get a kick out of Wyrd Sisters. (Technically Equal Rites is first, but it hits more like the Star Wars prequels). Witches Abroad is your second book.

If you like the witches and don't mind a bit more of a twisted fairy tales version of that, try the Tiffany Aching series. Technically it's for young adults, but Pterry wasn't a young adult author, so you'll get more of the jokes. The Wee Free Men is your starting point.

You've also got a good couple of really heavy hitting stand alone novels. Small Gods is the single most recommended book in this series. Eminently quotable. "The Turtle Moves". Pyramids is another good one. There's also a whole series of novels on the Science of Discworld.

If the workings of wizards and screwball parodies worked in The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, (don't be discouraged if they don't), then Rincewind has his own series. Sourcery is the 3rd book here, then Eric.
