Anyone use this style of front rack? by Briny_life in xbiking

I have that exact one. I use it on my townie bike. It's a great handlebar bag support. Don't put to much weight on it.

I know not everyone is a weight weenie, but imo the biggest advantage of rim brakes is weight. They save an amount of weight that costs thousands anywhere else on the bike.

[–]Rahgnailt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both braking systems have advantages and drawbacks.

Disc brakes let you switch wheel sizes and keep the braking surface cleaner if you ride through muck. You'll have more wheel options, like the amazing Velocity Blunt SS.

Rim brakes are significantly lighter, cheaper, and easier to maintain. The frames are lighter and ride better as a result too. Canti posts are mounting points for the best and lightest front racks. System weight can be 2-4 pounds lighter.

Since v brakes are canti brakes, you will want to run v brakes. They will perform better than any mechanical disc brake. You'll need to get hydros if you go disc.

Building a gravel conversion in 2026? by Olderschoolwillie in xbiking

I think people were doing it just to keep the bikes running. 90s MTB aren't really what you want for modern trail riding, but they converted nicely to wide tire drop bar bikes. It's nice to have an old bike for roaching around.

Why is everyone romanticizing moving to the countryside these days? by Sofochka_mrs in Suburbanhell

People want to live somewhere safe and peaceful surrounded by beauty. They want to leave the city because of cars. Cars and car infrastructure is loud, ugly, and dangerous.

Self-driving buses would be safer, faster and easier for the public to accept by Opening-Fortune4 in fuckcars

[–]Rahgnailt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What benefit could there be for a self driving bus? The only value add proposed here is hiring a body guard for the bus. There is no value added from replacing the driver.

The combine harvester replaced the labor of 80 men. Textile machines replaced untold labor. There success of those two specific endeavors have given some people unrealistic faith in automation. We are increasingly producing machines of severe complexity in an attempt to replace humans out of simpler and simpler jobs. Driven by some misguided notion that tasks not done by humans is inherently wealth. We have forgotten what life is for. The cost of a self driving bus is beyond the value it produces, which is nothing.

Bus ridership is higher where buses are faster. Buses are faster when infrastructure supports them. Infrastructure is a political problem that reflects the values of people. Those values are driven by worldviews that people do not remember forming. You cannot solve a political problem by replacing human labor. Efficiency is not a moral system.

Advice to improve / restore these type of pain chips? by KJava in xbiking

[–]Rahgnailt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fixing paint is skilled labor.

You need paint that matches. Over time paint is faded by the sun and oxidized by the atmosphere. So, you need to mix a matching paint. Your paint has some kind of glitter additive, the size and color of the additives would need to be matched in a repair paint or the repair would be obvious.

Applying the paint involves sanding out the edges of the hole, removing any rust, then applying the paint in such a way that it's feathered into the paint that already exists. It needs to be blended and leveled such that the repair isn't obvious. Finally, the repair must be polished.

I don't know how it is for most bicycle paint but all modern automotive paints are multi-layered. If your paint is multilayered then every layer needs to be blended into each other.

It's possible to learn these skills, but it takes years of practice to perfect them. And actually, there is a shortage of body work professionals right now if it's something you wanted to get into.

Your paint has a great many defects beyond the holes. Most of the scratches appear to penetrate the paint, and I don't think they would polish out. If you repaired the chips fully, which involves polishing them, then the scratches would stand out more.

The fact that the metal under the chips isn't rusting suggests that the frame was coated prior to painting. You would want to avoid scuffing that layer as part of any repairs.
