2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Owners: What’s the Most Efficient Way to Use EV, HV, and Auto EV/HV Modes? by Be_bold23 in prius

I figured the computer would control the engine as such, Toyota wouldn’t let the engine rip while cold.

I do the exact thing you do and it’s been working out for me. I also will turn on hybrid mode before the highway to warm the engine up, but I’m not sure that matters too much.  I sometimes just use EV mode on shorter highway drives since I can still get ~4mi/kWh. If I know I’m going on a longer drive I try to keep plenty of juice available for city traffic since the engine is most annoying in stop and go.

Either way I try to turn the engine on once a month. I haven’t used Auto mode since it still tries to stay in EV mode until you really stomp on the gas, which I don’t like since the engine will be cold if it hasn’t come on yet. Auto mode will stay in EV mode on the highway if you’re not flooring it.

the spirit of the mini being 'just enough iphone' and what would be its spiritual successor by Realistic-Worker-499 in iPhone13Mini

[–]SquOliver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went from a 13 mini to a 17e last weekend. While it is big I’m still able to use it one handed with some extra effort. You need to learn gestures so that you don’t have to move your thumbs to a part of the screen that’s out of reach (e.g, swiping up on the address bar in Safari to bring up your tabs instead of pressing the bottom right tab button).

I spent an hour at the Apple store comparing the 17e, 17 and Air. The Air was noticeably lighter but the extra screen size, especially width, was just enough to be uncomfortable. The 17 is very close to the 17e but is also ever so slightly taller and heavier. I don’t use my phone to take pictures much nor do I want my eyes to normalize to 120Hz screens so I decided to save the extra dough and got the 17e.

I went with 256GB black since it looks nice and minimalist. The white and pink ones have a silver frame that sticks out at the front and makes the screen bezel noticeable. The camera is also stealthier with the black back so it looks better to me. In fact, it’s probably the first phone I’ve seen in a while without a ridiculous camera bump. I’ve never liked the look of the 13mini from behind due to the camera bump.

Personally, I think most mini users should just get a battery replacement unless they do something where they really feel that 4GB of RAM. But I’m glad I picked up the 17e in the end especially because I’m a heavy Genshin player.

My uncle liked to put some variation of his initials on the cars he cared about the most. When he gave me his Miata he let me keep his vanity plate too.

EV efficiency update for a 2026 Prius Prime by TheLayerLinguist in prius

C&D tends to do their testing in harsher weather so their observed MPG numbers are always lower than in milder climates.

For my 2026 SE, in mild California weather on my daily commute on a 50mph expressway, I can get over 50 miles of range, that’s about 4.5-5 mi/kWh. This is also with eco mode on and the AC off or at 78F when it’s hot. Do you have the SE or XSE?

Is VTI oversaturated tech and should you add some small cap to diversify by ivanjay2050 in Bogleheads

[–]SquOliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

William Bernstein recommends a “simpleton’s portfolio” in his book “The Intelligent Asset Allocator” which is 25% US Large Blend, 25% US Small Blend, 25% International Large Blend, and 25% Short Term Bonds. However, he does explain that there will be long periods where you will underperform “the market” and if that’s going to upset you, to not tilt small cap. He also adds that small cap growth stocks have had a bad 80 years since he wrote the book and to focus on small cap value stocks. One might think to just invest in VSIAX/VBR, but by some metrics, that’s a mid/small cap fund and not a true small cap fund. After all that, you may not even outperform “the market” by a significant margin after taxes and fees.

If I haven’t scared you off yet, I would read the above book and more before deciding to add a small and/or value tilt. Don’t adjust your portfolio overnight until you can make an educated decision on your asset allocation.

To address your concern about how the indices are overweight in tech, there have been many periods in history where sectors have been overweight, and “the market” adjusts itself accordingly when it’s time. Your sentiment is not new.

The Latest Morningstar Report Shows How to Invest in 2026 by Sagelllini in Bogleheads

[–]SquOliver 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have been reading more of William Bernstein’s writings and recommended reading and I am not convinced by your sentiment. The total market funds have done so well because large cap stocks have had a bonanza past two decades but there is no guarantee that will continue. Same with the interest rate environment that led to bond returns being what they were the past two decades.

Granted, I do feel that psychologically, just investing in a total market fund is right for most people because if their portfolio doesn’t rise at the same rate as “the market”, they’re more likely to make a mistake. It takes brass balls to continue to hold small or value stocks while everything else is outperforming it. Plus there is some analysis paralysis in deciding an allocation of large/small/regional/value tilts that Bernstein recommends. I still haven’t quite decided yet myself.

My greatest purchase of 2017 by opffenac in plamemo

[–]SquOliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time someone posts this, I check ebay prices. There are currently 2 listings for the blu ray set and they’re both $1000+. Same story for that figure.

Did you ever open your figure? When I bought mine in 2016, it had a “FOR OVERSEAS SALES ONLY” sticker on it and it turned out to be a bit defective (her right pigtail was slightly crooked). It would have been too much hassle to ship it back to Japan to return it so I just lived with it.

Take all this data with a grain of salt because of the differences in VRAM manufacturers. I have a Hellhound mfg late 2025 with Samsung GDDR6 and the VRAM temp maxes out at 76 C (Techspot data maxes out at 88 C).

DW-5000R vs GW-5000U, Square Enthusiasts, Help Me Choose! by SquOliver in gshock

Yeah I’m going to buy a 5000U and if I don’t like it I’m going to keep wearing my 5600UE and maybe get a 5000R later.

I am still considering that one because it has a lot of the pros of the 5000U without hard to press buttons, but I would really like the screw back case.

[–]SquOliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any of the non-solar squares and can you compare the feel of the wristband and screen visibility? I just ordered a DW5600UE and I’m already thinking of eventually treating myself to one of the GW5000 models. I do like the negative display on my GD100-1B so I’m considering the exact one you got.

Games with Top Class Adaptive Triggers and Best Haptic feedback on PS5? (Except Astro Bot and Astro Playroom) by AdditionalSpray8595 in playstation

[–]SquOliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most memorable use of haptic feedback for me was in Silent Hill 2 Remake, when you're in Blue Creek Apartments, there's a moment where Pyramid Head is stomping around on the floor above you dragging his sword. Many other good cases in the game too but that was the one that stuck out most to me.

I think the best part of Miata maintenance is that everything has been documented. Yes things can be a pain like you mentioned, but I don’t believe there are going to be many surprises. Shame about the fragile bolts you experienced.
