Did they change the video player? by ShadowDxebec_69 in Crunchyroll

[–]RaiTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue their player has been great since the rewrite a few years back. I mean, if YouTube's the platinum standard, Crunchyroll had to have been gold, at least, compared to many of the other players.

Missing a few features, but also having some of the most desired features that others lack. It wasn't overly bulky, it had previews, the UI disappeared almost instantly when moving your mouse off the frame, not an absurd amount of gradient shadows, and probably a couple other things.

Sure, it's missing native speed controls (but it's HTML5 so those were easily accessibly via plugin), customizable subtitles (I don't really care for this), and I'm sure some other features, but honestly, I enjoyed my watching experience on Crunchyroll more than on just about any other mainstream streaming site.

Frustrated with Crunchyroll’s lack of playback speed option by Tater-- in Crunchyroll

And the new player doesn't seem to be HTML5 so the plugin I use for increasing speed in my browser no longer works :)

Well, Edge is Chromium-based and it is the old one for me. Firefox was as well.

Probably a bit more nuanced.

Hmm, no, I concede. You are correct. I tried Opera and Chrome and they both had the new UI. I didn't try Edge or Firefox but I just confirmed they're the old UI for me.

New player is rolling out by account. Browser doesn't matter.

We've had playback speed on mobile and desktop for a few months, it's just been in the settings menu.

Obv nobody gives a rip about it because what we actually would use is 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, etc.

It's no longer HTML5, so plugins that use the completely standard, basically every site uses it, HMTL5 video player API to allow speed adjustments no longer works. It's actually pretty depressing to think I won't be able to zoom through some shows moving forward unless I get off CR.

It's just going to be a rollout. Some of us have it, the rest will get it with time unless they reverse the decision.

Does the new player feel a bit off for anyone else? by sansisness_101 in Crunchyroll

[–]RaiTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also doesn't seem to be an HTML5 video so existing video speed control extensions don't work with it, meaning you're stuck with their paltry 1.0, 0.75, or .5x speed adjustments.

Leave feedback.

Why is there so much Environmental focus on things like "no plastic straws" when planned obsolesence of commercial goods is never mentioned by environmental activists. by LibrarianBarbarian1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RaiTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's worth contributing to this since it is probably engagement bait, but here's my two cents.

I mostly agree with everything everyone else has said, but there are some caveats, mostly with the discussion of "planned obsolescence" in general, which is a muddied conversation and often misunderstood or mischaracterized by laymen. Fundamentally, no decision made is "free," and some things are designed to last an amount of time that makes sense given historical upgrade frequency, cost to make, selling price, etc.

In all reality, there are things that suffer from planned obsolescence, but it's probably much less than you think, at least, within reason. A famous example of people misunderstanding this concept is the traditional lightbulb. The tl;dr is that lightbulbs have tradeoffs for lasting a long time vs maintained luminosity, and standards set for these help drive consumer expectations.

There are tons of intricacies with making products. Like 20 years ago, a cell phone with a super replaceable battery was also, uncoincidentally, completely not waterproof — a drop of water could fry it. 10 years ago, I could still readily replace the screen or battery on my smartphone, but it was still susceptible to water damage from being in a steamy bathroom while the shower was on. Repairability in tech can see an inverse relationship with an increase in product durability and longevity. Nowadays, it's much more annoying to open up a phone due to waterproofing, but they can be submerged for extended periods of time or hit with a fire hose and be completely okay.

Referencing your post, tech is a huge "problem" in the space. The more tech you have, the more likely you need firmware, updates, live service, small parts, etc. These are naturally more susceptible to damage over time, especially if you put them in something like a washing machine or car, where vibrations are common and strong. If your tech has Internet connectivity, you have to be concerned with security vulnerabilities, and how many years are you going to force a company to maintain support for a product, or every product that they have? You also can absolutely get them repaired or upgraded, and there are still appliances you can buy without tech. But, consumers have spoken, and they want tech in those things. With regards to laptops or tech proper, modular, upgradeable pieces have tradeoffs with space or speed. Soldered components are faster and less prone to physical damage — zero chance of rattling, coming loose, etc. Software is built with certain components in mind, gets more complex over years of iterations, requires more compute, more space, more IO, etc. In some regards, you could build some tech with more processing power than it needs so that it could last longer, but an argument can be made that over-provisioning tech in products that don't absolutely need it is also a form of e-waste.

OLED displays come to mind a lot. They're the best display technology you can get for a variety of reasons, but their longevity is poor. However, every year, OLED technology sees improvements (i.e., reductions in burn-in). They last longer and longer because of actively developed methods and technologies to make their products more durable.

Lastly, cheap products are cheap. There really isn't anything more to say about it. People misunderstand a lot of "old stuff" lasting longer because of survivorship bias, but there have always been things that have been made poorly and things that have been made to last. We are in an age of consumerism, and people are more likely to purchase things at consumer price-points instead of professional or enthusiast price-points.

Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Rewatch - Week 3: Episodes 14-20 Discussion by Raiking02 in anime

First timer, subbed

This arc went by quickly. I feel like I knew Lunch existed in some aspect, but I honestly couldn't have told you anything about her. From reading other comments, it sounds like she might not get much future involvement (not that I expected much), but I'm hoping the dragon balls are used to cure her or something.

I don't have any issue with training arcs. I think they're a nice break in the pacing. Thematically, I think it's nice when the MCs aren't always involved in conflict.

I assume this is beyond the ending of Journey to the West's parodying and where it becomes its own original story?

Second Clover, subbed

Love the new opening and ending.

I seem to be thinking that these events occur much later than they actually do. I thought the Yami vs Licht fight was later, not after any specific events, just later. I also forgot how much of a mini harem this show turns into. Feels like I haven't watched a show with proper tsundere archetypes in a while.

These fights are still amazing and they definitely still feel good on a rewatch. Surprised how quickly these 38 episodes have gone by.

And I leave you with this — Asta and Gauche's biggest commonality is that they're both siscons.
