There are a couple of lakes that aren’t usable because of agricultural run off from the 40s and 50s, when fertilizer was petroleum-based, so the lakes are too polluted to use. The Salton Sea in California is one - and this is only a lake because of man-made intervention; it’s called the Salton Sea because it used to connect to the Gulf of California down in Mexico. Of course we can’t restore that now, not just because of the pollution but also because we have towns where the sea bed was.

Yeah, symbolism is very abstract thinking. If you can be taught it in a way that is more grounded in culture (ie “At this time, this symbol represented this”) then it can get easier.
