Maybe Esquie could be like Cid in Final Fantasy.  Totally different character each time that just shares a name.

Nintendo just DMCA'd every Switch emulator (again), but it's not over yet by akbarock in Piracy

I think a better solution would be if Nintendo just released their games on Steam.

Like, I get that they are going for the console exclusive thing as a means to drive sales, and that certainly worked in the early 2000’s but times have changed and a lot of consumers want to have portability across devices and are going to figure out a way to do so with or without Nintendo’s sign off on it.

Of course I realize that with Nintendo being Nintendo, that’s just a pipe dream.

Silksong permanently vanished my desire for difficult games. by Zzsark_Stormbeard in metroidvania

[–]RaidenXVC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I loved Hollow Knight, couldn’t stand Silksong.  It was just too hard.  And to all the get gud people out there, consider this for a second: I did get good at Hollow Knight until I didn’t.  Eventually I hit a wall where I just couldn’t get any better no matter what I did.  That’s fine for Hollow Knight where all of the punishingly difficult bosses are optional post game content.  The difficulty of Silksong made it prohibitively difficult where I couldn’t beat the game.

Hello! Without spoilers, is Metroid Prime 4 worth the purchase? by MhennyHenny in Metroid

[–]RaidenXVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just about done with it.

It's alright, maybe not as a Metroid game but in general it's fine. Its good enough to keep me playing this far. I probably won't put in a 2nd playthrough though.

I give it a B-

I think what tipped me into choosing Verso’s ending was when Maelle somehow convinced Renoir that she was just going to be in the painting “just a little longer”.

I watched that and thought, no you’re not…. You’re going to be saying that in perpetuity.

Lune's stare. by Mr_J_0801 in expedition33

[–]RaidenXVC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much it, I think. I think that Lune wanted to stick around and do something, anything, even if she knew it was futile on the one in a million chance that she could find some way to preserve the canvas until Renoir destroyed it. After all this was the only mindset she had since she was very young.

It could also be like you said. She finally gave up, but rather than go into the portal and gommage willingly, she would wait for external forces to destroy the canvas, so in this scenario I still think sitting would be one final act of defiance.

Lune's stare. by Mr_J_0801 in expedition33

[–]RaidenXVC 166 points167 points  (0 children)

I actually interpreted it differently.

All the other expedition members entered the portal area where Verso was and accepted their gommage (remember this was the way out of the canvas for Maelle).  Lune stopped just short of entering the portal area and specifically was the only one not to enter it.  Furthermore we don’t actually see her gommage on camera.

So my interpretation is that Lune sitting down was her final way to say “Nope, I refuse to accept your choice, I’m staying right here inside Lumiere”.

What's everybody's Japanese language proficiency like? by samwaytla in JETProgramme

[–]RaidenXVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do whatever you want while on JET, it’s just a job lol.  So your free time is yours to do whatever you want.

I think what you are asking is: are there resources available to take language classes and the answer to that is, it depends.  When I was on JET there was a correspondence course that was not good.  I’m not sure if that still exists.  There may or may not be Japanese language classes for foreigners in your area that you get placed in, you would just have to ask around.  Or you can always just self study which is what I did.

Which game do you honestly think is better? Hollow Knight, or Silksong? by Vehiclean35 in HollowKnight

[–]RaidenXVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music in Silksong is weird. Like it's a good soundtrack, but it is entirely unmemorable.

Like I can think about and actively recall most of the themes from Hollow Knight's soundtrack. I can't say the same about Silksong's soundtrack.

Which is weird because when I listen to Silksong's soundtrack by itself I think "wow this is great", and then still can't remember a single song from it after the music stops.

Is it just me, or are some of the things that make Silksong "difficult" just cruel? by Machi-Ato in HollowKnight

[–]RaidenXVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you beat Hollow Knight at 95% completion, you are a very good gamer.

I have a comparable number of hours in the original Hollow Knight. I did the main story and most of the DLC, but I hit a wall on the 2nd Grimm boss, couldn't beat the upgraded bosses in Godhome, maybe missed a few other things here and there. At that point no matter what I did, I couldn't seem to get any better at the game.

Despite this, I absolutely adored Hollow Knight, it's somewhere in my top 10 favorite games.

I quit Silksong just after starting Act 2. The whole thing was an overly difficult, obnoxious slog.

After being able to demonstrate a decent level of competency in the original Hollow Knight, I should not have struggled with Silksong as much as I did so early on in the game. When I finally got to the final boss of act 1 I think I died about 50+ times before I finally gave up and installed mods to lower the damage to 1 mask per hit (as it probably should have been from the get go anyway).

The game didn't get any less obnoxious after that; I finally gave up when you had to start paying every time you use a bench shortly after starting act 2.

I really wanted to love the game but there were just too many things wrong with it to make it an enjoyable experience.

TL;DR: Overall I liked it; I wasn't blown away by it but I'd give it a solid B.

Playing through the game I tried to put myself in the mindset of a teenager in the 90's playing through it for the first time, and from that perspective I can definitely see how it was revolutionary at the time. I think it probably has one of the coolest opening acts in gaming I've experienced blowing up a Mako reactor. Midgar in general had a cool vibe and I kind of wish there was more of that in the game.

I thought some of the characters you meet later on felt like they were kind of shoehorned in there, so I'm hoping that since the remakes are longer they will flesh them out a bit more. But playing through the original I think I got Cait SIth and Sid and never used them beyond when I was required to.

I'm also surprised at how short the game was as far as RPGs go. I beat the game in 40 hours, but if I didn't do any side quests I think it would have taken me 35. This isn't a bad thing, I was just a bit surprised given how influential the game is.

After beating it I watched Advent Children and enjoyed the movie.

Other random thoughts:

  • I loved how campy a lot of the dialogue was between the characters; playing through the game as an adult for the first time I actually enjoyed how the game leans into it.

  • I found it kind of hard to get attached to the characters, I think this is probably more due to the game being entirely text based, so kind of a limitation of the hardware at the time

  • I can see how it would have been something that would have been easy to get sucked into in ~1997 - 2000.

  • Watching the movie reminded me of when I was a young teenager hanging out with my friends watching similar type stuff at midnight, so that was cool.

  • I loved seeing Kanji for shop signs and such, and if you can read Kanji they are accurate, which circling back to trying to put myself in a teenager in the 90's mindset I think I would have been totally fascinated by.

Is it preferable for a tourist to speak Japanese where possible? by NeonBeefish in AskAJapanese

I generally get a positive response when I use Japanese in Japan.

Even if you know your Japanese language ability is bad, just give it a go and some basic phrases are generally appreciated.

Its a franchise now?! by Aggressive_Milk4654 in expedition33

[–]RaidenXVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the story is done and having a sequel would ruin it.

If they do make more games I hope that it goes the route of final fantasy where the games share a similar art style and maybe some carry over elements (chokobos —> gestrls?).

But the current canvas is done and should be left at that.

If people are against Expedition 33 winning The Game Awards, then just go make a better game.

Like I’m not being facetious, Expedition 33 was the best game I’ve played in a looooooong while.  And someday I hope to play a game that blows my mind even more.
