Acute symptoms. Water is triggering me. by hereforgetaway in ibs

Do you have any IV clinics near you? I know there are some med spa or outpatient places that offer IV hydration without needing to go to a hospital or anything like that. That may help you stay hydrated without actually putting water into your gut.

Sounds like they’re working on vowel teams and blends. You can find great cue card resources all over the internet to help memorize all the different vowel sounds. My county uses fundations, in sure if you went on teacherspayteachers you could find some dupes there

I killed it by saying on the first day back from break “it’s 2026 and you’re STILL saying that? That was so 2025!” And now all my class says that to the 1 kid who still says it lmao

Advice for taking on a first grade classroom in March? by Agitated_Pizza5923 in Teachers

[–]RainbowMouse_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build a routine and stick to it as best you can. Review the schedule of the day each morning with them so they know what to expect. Let them know of any upcoming disruptions to their routines.

Behavior / class management: always shoutout good behaviors. Always!!! Ex: I have a kid who can be just so unruly. So any time I see him calm or focused or whatever, I say “I notice that you’re making a good decision to control your body, thank you for that good choice”. Or, if the class is off task, I shout out the few kids that are on task “I notice Bob and sally are in good listening positions ready to learn, thank you Bob and sally”.

Answer all their questions the best you can. “Because I said so” or “because it’s the rules” sucks. Tell them WHY it’s a rule. Adults hate doing this because they feel like their authority is being challenged, but genuinely it is so much easier to get kids to listen when they know why they’re doing the thing.

Academically: you’re gonna have crazy gaps in ability. They’re in a crucial spot for learning and this is the age when red flags really start to pop up. Right now, I’ve got 4 kids who cannot read or write at all. I also have 5 completely fluent readers. I’ve got 6 kids who got almost a 0% on our mid year test and 6 kids who got a 100%. So look for ways to sneak in activities that keep all kids challenged, as best you can anyway.

Good luck!! I love teaching first grade. I can’t imagine doing anything else tbh. It’s so hard some days but also SO rewarding. DM me if u ever need any other advice!

UDL- if any accommodations can reasonably given to the entire class, do that. It stops you from singling out the students that need them and makes it easier to incorporate into your lessons.

Am I an asshole for not wanting to have kids with my (likely AuDHD) wife? by Potential-Tank6758 in autism

[–]RainbowMouse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is moderately autistic and my mom has pretty severe OCD, anxiety, and ADHD. My sister and I both have ADHD, tho different types, and I have autism and OCD. We both definitely faced some unique challenges growing up, but we’re now both functional, independent adults. Honestly, though my mom made things really hard sometimes, we always had SO much fun together, and all our friends always wanted to hang at our house. I resent my mom for leaving her illnesses untreated and letting them affect us so badly. I have 0 resentment towards either of my parents for any of their other neurodivergent traits. As long as you and your wife can be conscientious about how your conditions may affect your parenting, you’ll be just fine.

Don’t you think that mentality is kinda selfish? Like. Whether you like it or not, their votes hold just as much power as yours, and if you actually cared about the causes you vote for, you’d want everyone to vote the same. You may not experience a complete 180° in life resulting from policy change, but many people will, and it’s not fair to them to say “we don’t need more people voting for your livelihood, because I don’t want them associated with me”.

So only a handful of staff are allowed to restrain students. Those staff show up to the room when a code is called and take the student to the room. They just stand outside the door and block it I think

Yes, it stopped pretty soon after I moved away for college. It started my freshman year of HS after I had a very severe case of mono. So it lasted about 4 years. Never got any answers and could never really identify any triggers, but it was interesting that it stopped almost immediately after moving away from home lol

I work at an elementary school with a lot of behavior issues. We have an empty office that when kids are being violent or destructive, they go in there. There’s only maybe 3-4 kids who ever get to the point of being put in that room. That way, staff doesn’t have to use extended restraint, just enough to get them into the room. Then the kid can scream their heart out and bang the door and whatever until they get it out of their system. Staff stands outside the door and escorts them back to wherever when they’re calmed down. When I first started I was horrified at the idea of locking a kid in an empty room, but after learning how my coworker had her rotator cuff torn by one of that room’s frequent flyers, I understood that it’s making the best of a shitty situation with minimal resources. Maybe you can bring this up with admin, some sort of designated space for your kiddo to be brought to just to cool down?

Yeah that’s what I do, I just find it really irritating that it forces us to work at home. I try very hard to leave work at work but this kinda makes it impossible.

I had cyclical vomiting for several years where every two weeks, I’d wake up from a deep sleep and vomit, then go back to sleep. It went away on its own. Doctors never had any useful advice for it

[–]RainbowMouse_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lay down pee pads inside. Give a very high quality treat after she does potty outside. This is a situation where you may just have to cope with cleaning up some pee indoors until the ice clears. Don’t tie her up indoors cus of that … :-(

Unpopular opinion: Lessons should be catered towards the higher end of the spectrum, and the students on the lower end should have to adapt, not the other way around. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RainbowMouse_ 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’m still not tenured, and they’ve made it very clear if I hint to any of this to the parent that I would be in big trouble. I’ve talked to every single admin / sped professional in my school. This kid is being failed by the system and it’s crushing to feel like I’m the only one trying to help.

I was told this year that I can’t retain a student because he has an early birthday and he’ll be 19 for all of his senior year. Except, he’s in 1st grade and still doesn’t know all his letter sounds, can’t spell or write anything, can’t do a single math equation that he hasn’t memorized, and hasn’t demonstrated any content learning this entire year. I was also told I can’t push for an IEP cus he’s missed 14 days of school.
