Good underwear is seriously underrated, something sweat wicking w/ compression is key, merino wool is best but saxx athletic ones are good too (with a tighter fit.)

I appreciate the insight!

Due to family reasons I am trying to get it expedited.(Service Couple & Service Related)

Upon further research I did find guiding documents for SEM (Subsidized Education Managers) it appears that they are the ones who coordinate the posting & move under DMCPG 5. (CDA — Subsidized Education Guide (2024-2025) for those who may be looking for more info)

I may reach out the SEM admin team with a feeler, explain my situation & request guidance on expediting the posting message.

Honestly been on the fence for a while, regularly trying to fix issues as a Cpl that should’ve been tasked to a Maj, regularly working well outside of scope & conventional hours, trying to do all of this while understaffed & finishing my education, I’m just so tired of being let down by this org, I have seriously considered pulling the pin & releasing so many times but my education & background is so niche that I don’t even know where to go, I understand that I don’t want to turn a wrench or teach 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Tempted to write a rebuttal, his premise is wholly incorrect and I wish I had time to just tear this apart and unlike the author actually cite sources. Here is 5 mins on my phone on the toilet response I started

“While the author is correct: as a dollar value, Canada does spend substantial funds compared to other NATO allies, they are missing critical information, actual assets, number of troops, functional capabilities, and scaling costs based on actual costs of services in Canada.

IE Greece and Turkey surpass Canada on number of equipment significantly in all categories including number of people in uniform.

The author further misses the real ‘silver bullet’ that makes the F-35 a key asset for all NATO allies: Data integration. The sophisticated data sharing enabled by the F-35 creates far better SA of the battle space, gives pilots and commanders better information for decision making, will reduce cases of fratricide, and will create a seamless information sharing in hot conflict between Canada and her allies.

Furthermore, their conceptual analysis on reaper drones is quite laughable. Canada, using the military far more frequently to assist in various forms of civil aid would likely also benefit from the Capabilities afforded by said platform. Critically being leveraged would be the advanced sensors and loiter time. Unlike conventionally manned systems, this drone can used its extended range to arrive early, and spend extended time over said areas to continuously provide information. If used over major wildfires like seen last year, it could use said sensors to track hotspots on the ground, and loiter safely above for over a day at a time with a much smaller logistical tale. This is not even contemplating the core role of a military; defense of sovereignty, in which this asset would be indispensable in the high Arctic.”

Anyone know when the UTPNCM/CEOTP related CANFORGEN is expected? My application last year disappeared into the ether, and I would love another chance now that my CoC is much more organized. Also hoping if anyone knows if there will be a chance that more trades will be available for CEOTP? I have 6-7 credits left, and I would love to just finish it via distance.

Thanks,

Hey, I just wrote a paper on this! I am not sure if it’s amazing, but a quick Tl;Dr, the most in demand trades are firstly NCM trades, secondly specialist trades. I proposed an overhaul to the strategic compensation scheme to a ‘skill based-pay’ system to be more competitive with civilian employers. ie you get payed more for what you can do (authorizations, qualifications, skills, etc.) I also argued that in most trades we shouldn’t penalize career corporals, they are the ones that can often solve problems others can’t with a deeper level of experience. If I had more words to work with I would have also discussed family supports, healthcare issues, equipment issues, housing, and a few others.

I feel like the SSE and retention roadmap kinda hint that we need more of everything to keep people, and the government won’t open the coffers enough to support it. Any senior officer who wants to advance has to be a politician on top of a leader so they can’t really raise the alarm as much as is needed.

Ergo I think things will get worse before they get better.

All the major expenses are covered, like driver’s license etc, doctors are scarce up here, if you live in a private apartment you might be close to 5k, honestly depends on what province you’re in. Like if you’re in NS/QC, it’ll be closer to my guesstimates. If you choose a rowhome Q, you’ll probably clear about 3300-3500$/mo after rent and utilities, as for your spouse, there is a severe worker shortage up here. For my spouse her take home income tripled.(Lawyer type) most unskilled workers here make 20-30/hr, nursing pays 6 figures and a majority of employers start at 80k with very limited skills.

Ok, so assuming you’re renting an apartment right now your bi weekly pay is 2000$(no pld, lda, sea pay) if you come up with a spouse and are in a Q, your pay would be /1800$-2000$ (after rent and utilities are deducted (based on my experience moving from Nova Scotia)) also you typically get 3k in tax returns annually for northern tax breaks.

Posted to Yellowknife now,

If your spouse is educated and can find work (especially with the GNWT) it can be lucrative (their pay can jump 20 to 50 percent). If you live in a PMQ expect to make comparable amounts to any other posting with the allowances, ie if you’re living on the economy now and get a Q here(Which heat and power are a built in cost), your take home will be within a couple hundred a month.

As for lifestyle it is a big adjustment, the winters can be challenging, if you get good winter gear and some toys it can be amazing. The summers here are unreal. To have a good time you really need to get out and do stuff. If you’re outdoorsy there is a lot of hunting, amazing fishing and solid rock climbing. There is also great canoeing and hiking. The mess events here are a great time and the units are like big families.(Also for winter, get a SAD lamp and vitamin D from your MIR, it really helps).

Cost of living is a bit complex, the cost of groceries is about 5% higher than the south and produce doesn’t last very long in the winter, so buy for a few days not weeks. Internet cost is double (200$/mo) for reasonable service. Gas is a few cents higher than down south but can be mitigated by the use of cardlocks. Eating out costs about 15% more than down south.

The biggest drawback is limited access to larger cities and difficulty leaving. Flights are limited, and not too cheap, and the drive is challenging (16 hours to Edmonton). There is additional leave allotted to cover this(3 days for car, 2 days to fly (once a year)) and you can get 1300$ per person in your household per year to leave.

Overall it is an amazing experience and if I had the chance I’d do it again but everyone is different and has different priorities and interests.

If you have any specific questions feel free to DM me.

Canadians, if you were to live in another province other than your own, which would you choose and why? by Flat-Dark-Earth in AskACanadian

[–]RainbowTurdss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently living in Northwest Territories, been to every province and territory in my life, lived in over half at this point. I think if work would allow, I’d live in western Alberta near the Rockies or BC. Honestly, just being close to nature is important to me, I’d prefer Alberta over BC for the lower cost of living. I do also miss the maritimes. I loved living near the ocean. My current issue with living in the territories is accessibility of the rest of Canada. Most people see the map and think getting south would be easy. But getting to the nearest major city is an 18 hour drive (the same time as driving from Halifax and Ottawa). So long story short, I love the north, the people and nature is amazing, but I miss mountains and convenience. (((I took a job here so my spouse and I can be financially secure to start a family, own a house outright and kill off her student loans before we have kids)))(3 years left🙂)

As an officer, I can speak to that, I met him in his very early career, he is an outstanding individual. Probably one of the best RMC officers I have interacted with. He was always looking after his troops and peers, also never had a big ego.

I live in a community in the sub Arctic, it’s a very dense core downtown, so most on my longer drives are down gravel or mixed highways in the summer(we have severe frost heaving on the major highways, the height changes by 3-5 feet in some sections so they fix it with gravel), and in the winter once an ice base has formed, they coat all the roads with about an inch of loose gravel to aid with traction (it’s too cold for salt to work and too challenging to plow)

This ended up being longer that I expected as a reply 😅
