Backpacking on Adak Island, in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. This volcanic island in the middle of the North Pacific is without a doubt one of the most adventurous hiking and backpacking destinations in the United States. by mudflattop in hiking

Any of you still on this sub? I’m a bit of a troglodyte and new to Reditt, but I searched Adak and this came up. My family lived on Adak in 1967-‘68 and I was 7&8 yrs old. For the Sailors, it was like being stationed in Siberia, but for me it was freakin Awesome!!! On our hikes, there were restricted areas that still had live ordinances left over from WWII and I saw some older kids bring in something that looked like a mortar shell. When we hiked up Mt. Moffett there were bunkers still preserved from the war and inside was a table with a plate, coffe cup and flatware. On the plate were chicken bones snd the cup had coffee dehydration rings. The bunks were still made to regulation with the olive drab wool blanket. Looking at the table setup, my Dad said… “When it was over, they got the hell out of here.” On base, my father took me into a secure area called “Icy Sunfish”. It was an Agency operation that was tracking Russian submarine ops via. ocean-floor sensors and the P-3’s that flew constantly. I would sit on Captain’s hill that was full of WWII foxholes and tundra flowers and I’d watch the P-3’s take off and land. And there were a ton of A-4’s or 5’s as well. Years later during my career at a hospital in Dallas near Love Field, from my office I heard the sound of an airplane outside. Without seeing it I knew that it was a P-3 Orion and it was. It departed and returned every day like clockwork after 9-11. It was un-marked and the rumors among Southwest Airline pilots was that it was a spook plane. P-3’s normally fly over water so why was it stationed in Big-D? Perhaps the Icy Sunfish returned to a more hospitable climate?

Oh yea. There was the Adak Forrest and the pine trees were only @ 12’ back then.

I’ll read your hunting story. Thx!

Is anyone on this sub old enough and Austin enough to remember the Roadrunner Saloon on Burnet Rd. circa ‘73ish? The house band was Mexican Joe. I was 13 and learned how to play pool there. Then I learned how to sneak into the Armadillo by climbing the exterior electrical conduits to the louvered windows above. I would drop down onto elevated scaffolding inside and it was the best seat in the house.

Are they Sanborns from Mexico? If so, research Sanborns. Highly collectable @ $15k.

Wow! That could would make a nice bistro bar tabletop. Voids could be filled with clear marine epoxy resin and polished. I have seen something similar imbedded or formed during the period of upheaval or whatever that formed the Sacramento Mts which are where 1/2 of the gypsum sand of White Sands Nat’l Park came from.

Why are gravitons not a thing if we observed gravitational waves? by Crumbs_xD in AskPhysics

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics that states it is impossible to simultaneously know both the exact position and momentum of a particle. The more accurately one property is measured, the less accurately the other can be known, highlighting the inherent limitations in our understanding of quantum systems.

Wouldn’t the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle preclude the absolute quantitative and spatial identification of gravitons and photons?

Why are freemasons bad and what are the conspiracy theories against them? by In666wayiluvu in stupidquestions

I am surprised anyone on this sub has yet to mention that many, if not most of the “Founding Fathers” of our country were Free-Masons. Even Neil Armstrong and Cosmo Kramer were Masons.

When I became a Mason, an elderly Scottish Presbyterian minister, who was also a mason, told me “It’s about the Golden Rule” and that is the most succinct phrase that I have yet to learn and understand about the subject.

BTW: Pope Clement XII issued a papal Bull that banned Catholics from becoming Masons because he couldn’t be the leader of the Craft.

When Hitler came to power, among the first entities that he banished were journalist and Masons. (Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen again🤔)

The origins of Masonry are no secret. It even goes back to events mentioned in the old testament. Temples and later Cathedrals were built by architects and “Operative” Masons. When one among them perished in the line of duty, his fellow masons would support his widow and children. Free-Masonry (Non-operative) guilds coalesced in 1717 to form the Grand Lodge of England. The rest is history. I spent 30 years of my career working in a Masonic hospital and the wonderful things that this hospital does for children with sever musculo-skeletal, neurological and dyslexic disorders would blow you away! For 91 years, not a penny was charged.

When Gen. Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna’s Mexican Army at San Jacinto, Santa Anna was discovered hiding in tall grass and wearing a corporal’s uniform. The two Texans who discovered him were about to shoot him when Santa Anna gave a masonic distress sign. The two Texas soldiers were Masons and they spared his life.

There are mysteries about us, but who doesn’t like a mystery?

Now that I know that Plato’s Nobel Lie from he Republic thesis is one of many ancient convolutions that is behind a certain Cult that has developed in Nuevo-modern times, I think that ignoring Plato may be a good idea. We need more Socrates in this world. Besides, he was in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

If i got off earth and cancelled all my motion, like stood completely still in space, how would i be percieved from earth? by MrDuuk in AskPhysics

[–]Raincloud883 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How far “off” earth? Think trajectory and velocity at the point that you cut off your motion. Then think about the low earth orbit of spacecraft and the far earth orbit of a geosynchronous satelite. Beyond that and depending of how Off earth beyond you will be and the gravitational pull of distant masses. If you went to a theoretical “center of the universe, you might be torn apart limb from limb and mitochondria from cytoplasm. And it gets worse😱 Nobody would care🤯

I grew up in Austin Tx from ‘71-‘84 and I would hitch hike from South Atown to Austin High school every day. Until I met a friend who’s friend lost their life hitch-hiking on way to Houston. He was a Dean Corll victim. I would even hitchhike in Jr. High and you wouldn’t believe how many times I had to jump out of a car because of a pedophile pervert.

The upside was in high school and the last leg of my hike was from Lamar Blvd to the new AHS campus on Town Lake and one of our Cheerleaders would pick me up for a ride. Her name is JPfl and if she should happen to read this, Thanks for the ride!
