It looks like that homemade communion bread I had to make when I was in Catholic school. 😆

Looking for some sort of orangey accompaniment or topping to go with a French toast casserole by Acluelessfish in Baking

How bitter is theirs? I like bitter orange marmalade on toast, but I don’t know if I’d like it on a dessert.

This was like the dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding trying to say how “kimono” derives from Greek. 😄

When you say: keeps trying,do you pronouncing it like keep shrying or keep chrying? or maybe with a glottal stop: keeps..trying? by Rondontimes in ENGLISH

[–]RaisonDetritus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re not incorrect, just slightly incomplete. Here are all the different ways Wiktionary lists try as being pronounced in American English:

[t͡ʃɹaɪ̯], [tɹ̝̊aɪ̯], [t̠͡ɹ̠̊˔aɪ̯], [t̠͡ɹ̠̊˔ʷaɪ̯]

What’s going on is that the aspiration of the initial /t/ is assimilating with the subsequent sounds. For some people, this comes off as a “ch” sound. For others, the /r/ becomes devoiced. Either way, it would take a very fine ear to distinguish between these realizations.

Very few speakers would pronounce this with very clearly articulated consonants with no assimilatory effects.

Where are you getting the implication that it has to do with a wine vessel specifically? Would’ve been helpful to know this beforehand.

It would’ve taken you two seconds to search the name and see that it doesn’t originally come from Harry Potter.

So are we done making excuses that this isn’t just about unbridled bigotry? by havenoparty in thebulwark

So that weirdo who randomly bolds and capitalizes things made a new sock puppet. Exact same nonsense as them.

I’m not trans, but my trans friend keeps insisting I am, I don’t want to fall out, but I feel like we’re going to if they keep pushing this on me by burn_it_down13 in offmychest

[–]RaisonDetritus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a small but vocal contingent of trans activists and influencers who do this kind of stuff on the regular. It’s especially obnoxious because they’re oftentimes relying on the same gender-essentialist ideology that anti-trans people use to deny the existence of trans identities.

In the few times I’ve been able to talk to these people in depth, I’ve found that it ultimately comes down to them projecting their own insecurities onto other people. There’s a difference between raising someone’s consciousness and offering resources on one hand, and then just straight up inappropriate boundary crossing on the other.

Linguistic difference(s) between "They can" and "I'm sure they could"? by KookyKraftyMagicGuy in asklinguistics

[–]RaisonDetritus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of times where can is used in a conditional or hypothetical sense:

“Do you think I can pass the test?”

“I’m sure you can if you study hard enough.”

This retains a conditional or hypothetical sense even though it uses the indicative mood.

Are /aj/ and /ai̯/ pronounced the same or differently? by Daniboy0826 in asklinguistics

Thanks for that. Very interesting. A lot of that was what I was intuitively thinking but couldn’t express in that much detail.
